| | | Nicola Benedetti - Fantasie
Nicola Benedetti (violin) British violinist Nicola Benedetti presents her fourth album, Fantasie, a selection of well-loved violin pieces that form a stunning violin showcase. The repertoire is varied, ultimately all popular pieces and greatly different to the repertoire on her most recent discs. The combination of virtuosic, gipsy-influenced show stoppers with introspective meditations and songs represents the two aspects of violin-playing that particularly interest Benedetti, as well as showing her musical and technical development. Upon winning the prestigious BBC Young Musician of the Year competition at the age of 16, Benedetti signed to Deutsche Grammophon and recorded the winning Szymanowski Concerto no. 1, gaining critical acclaim. The albums that followed contained world premiere works written especially for Benedetti by the pre-eminent British composers, James MacMillan and Sir John Tavener. She has established a fantastic career performing with major orchestras across the UK, US and Japan, garnering praise for her bold interpretations of concertos such as Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Glazunov and Szymanowski. For Fantasie Benedetti has put aside the concerti to explore some of the recital greats, including Vaughan Williams’ ‘The Lark Ascending’, one of the greatest works for violin which, for the last three years, has been voted Classic FM’s favourite piece of classical music in their Hall of Fame. “The Lark Ascending is beautifully played, with pure, unforced tone, and in the unmeasured passages Benedetti imaginatively suggests the bird's unfettered, unpredictable flight. By contrast, she produces an alluring, vibrant tone for the Méditation from Thaïs, and a similarly passionate approach animates several of the newly recorded tracks-the Rachmaninov and Fauré, particularly.” Gramophone , Awards 2009 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Itzhak Perlman
Elgar: | Violin Concerto in B minor, Op. 61 Royal Albert Hall, London, 9/8/1981 BBC Symphony Orchestra, Gennadi Rozhdestvensky | Prokofiev: | Violin Concerto No. 1 in D major, Op. 19 Royal Festival Hall, London, 22/10/1980 BBC Symphony Orchestra, Gennady Rozhdestvensky | Saint-Saëns: | Introduction & Rondo capriccioso, Op. 28 London Coliseum Theatre 25/10/1970 Sadler's Wells Orchestra, Charles Mackerras |
The great Israeli-born violinist Itzhak Perlman has already left a huge number of sound recordings of his interpretations; but it adds an extra dimension to be able to watch him execute, for instance, the brilliant spiccato bowing in Saint-Saëns's Introduction and Rondo capriccioso.A master of the French style through his teacher Ivan Galamian, Perlman at 25 is seen in the first full flush of his talent.Ten years later, the mature soloist shows his total command of the modern Russian style of Prokofiev - at a BBC Symphony Orchestra golden jubilee concert - and the bitter-sweet romanticism of Elgar's massive, virtuosic concerto. “Perlman is in his prime in the Prokofiev First and the Elgar Concerto, and the steady camerawork doesn't stray far from him or Rozhdestvensky. Both are fiery live performances, as is the even earlier Saint-Saëns.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2009 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | A Natural Born FiddlerThis DVD introduces the unbelievable talents of Valeriy Sokolov
Valeriy Sokolov (violin) A film by Bruno Monsaingeon ‘It was in Britain, in the spring of 2003, at the Yehudi Menuhin School, that I first had the opportunity to hear Valeriy Sokolov play. I had only just learned of his existence when he offered to play me the Ysaÿe Sonata. As he did so, not the slightest tension marred the impression he gave of total ease with his instrument, absolute control of technique, a musical maturity which made the fact that he was only sixteen completely irrelevant, and above all an utter abandonment to the flow of the music... I was seized by a compulsion to try and capture Valeriy Sokolov in all the freshness of his youth as soon as possible. So I made this film...’ Bruno Monsaingeon Format: NTSC Language: English Region: All Regions Aspect Ratio: 1.33:1 Number of discs: 1 DVD Release Date: September 12, 2006 Run Time: 93 minutes Subtitles - English, French | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
