The Solti Centenary Concert in Chicago celebrated Sir Georg Solti’s 100th birthday on October 21, 2012, featuring the World Orchestra for Peace. This unique ensemble owes its existence to the vision of its founder, Sir Georg Solti, who believed passionately in peace and the power of music and musicians to be ambassadors for peace.

Charmingly hosted by Solti’s widow, Lady Valerie Solti, and featuring soloists such as Angela Gheorghiu and René Pape as well as members of the Georg Solti Accademia, this memorable evening presents musical highlights, all of which played a significant role in Solti’s life and career.

Besides excerpts from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte and Don Giovanni or Verdi’s La Traviata and Rigoletto, this concert finds lovely musical moments in the 'Adagietto' from Mahler’s Fifth Symphony, Strauss’ Don Juan and Bartók’s masterful Concerto for Orchestra. Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever as the encore closes the performance with a smash.

Conductor Valery Gergiev was a good friend of his advisor Georg Solti. Together with Lady Valerie Solti and the World Orchestra for Peace he carries on Solti’s vision and maintains his memory.

The paintings of Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) constitute one of the most poignant and evocative icons of Georgian England; he painted supremely accomplished portraits of a wide social spectrum, and landscapes which capture the verdancy of England prior to the Stygian advance of the Industrial Revolution.

Gainsborough’s own creativity sought expression in music as much as in painting, which was unusual in an age when musical ability was mainly considered the preserve of the ladies.

For this musical tribute to Gainsborough, we have gathered together pieces by several of his friends; Abel, J.C. Bach, Giardini, Linley & Straube.

Hai gia vinta la causa! (from Le nozze di Figaro)

Non piu andrai, farfallone amoroso (from Le Nozze di Figaro)

Celebrating the genius of Mozart, this exciting release features 15 of his most celebrated operatic arias, performed by legendary bass-baritone Ferruccio Furlanetto.

The compilation traces Mozart’s four most famous operas and details nine separate characters in the space of an hour. From Figaro’s military-style ‘Non più andrai’ to the Count’s display of jealous insecurity in ‘Hai già vinta la causa!’ – two of four arias from Le nozze di Figaro – Furlanetto also explores the servant-nobleman roles in Don Giovanni, performing the infamous ‘Madamina! il catalogo è questo’ and ‘Champagne Aria’ among others. Così fan tutte, Mozart’s third and final collaboration with librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, sees the bass-baritone take on the role of Guglielmo, while in Die Zauberflöte, written just a couple of months before the composer’s death, the singer contrasts the naivety of Papageno the birdcatcher (‘Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja’ and ‘Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen’) with the wisdom and purity of Sarastro (‘In diesen heil’gen Hallen’).

Representing the pinnacle of Mozart’s mature style, these arias run the full gamut of emotions and reveal Furlanetto’s range of technical and expressive virtuosity. To find the same artist singing such a wide variety of roles in his career, let alone on the same disc, is a rare thing: this recording is a fine addition to the Newton Classics vocal library.

Booklet note by Mozart opera conductor and scholar Ian Page.

Recorded in 1991.
