Andreas Scholl (counter-tenor) & Tamar Halperin (piano)

A new and exquisite collection of German songs from counter-tenor Andreas Scholl, providing a perfect balance between text and music. The choice of music reflects Scholl’s belief that music need not be confined in performance to a particular voice type, as long as “the singer’s approach is true.”

Scholl pulls off a bravura display in Schubert’s An Mignon, singing in both the counter-tenor and baritone register. The performance of these songs reveals an intuitive understanding between singer and accompanist, Andreas Scholl and Tamar Halperin.

“Scholl is seeking out that place in German Lieder where folksong seems to transmute into art song: simplicity is all, and the Brahms songs are performed with virtually no interpretative gloss, allowing words to speak purely through the register and harmonic underlay of their setting.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2013 ****

“Scholl brings the same commitment to the Classical and Romantic repertory as he does to Purcell and Dowland. His priorities, as he states on the packaging, are 'simplicity and sincerity'...As a recitalist, Scholl is less a story-teller than a weaver of spells, unleashing a fully conceived emotional state and sustaining it.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2013

“On one level Wanderer gives the listener abundant pleasure...Scholl’s diligent phrasing, purity of tone and lack of tricks bring...rewards...His piano partner, Tamar Halperin, is deft and poetic...Listen a little deeper, though, and limits to this pleasure emerge. Up at the top of Scholl’s register the more the voice seems trapped in a narrow pipe with no room for clear articulation of words or subtle changes of colour and weight.” The Times, 2nd November 2012 ***

The present collection of Schubert Lieder contains the only recording of a live concert by Christoph Prégardien. The CD contains Lieder recorded in two concerts during 2003 and 2006 when Prégardien was at the peak of his vocal career.

After Songs of love & death this CD is the second recording with Christoph Prégardien accompanied by guitar. The accompaniment of the Romantic Lied by guitar was well accepted by Schubert’s contemporaries and the guitar itself was pretty en vogue in these times. In Prégardien’s opinion Schubert’s Lieder are closely connected with the intimate sound of the guitar.

Tilman Hoppstock has selected 12 Lieder of Winterreise and five others and arranged them for his instrument.

“With its different weight, measure and dynamic voicing, the guitar simply cannot recreate Schubert's subtle patterning of keyboard-conceived inflection and accenting...The guitar comes into its own, though, in the bleak, hurdy-gurdy accompaniment of 'Der Leiermann'. Prégardien's singing is just as intelligent and sentient as ever.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 ***

Abschied von der Erde, D829

Two musical titans in the classical world, British tenor Ian Bostridge and Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, both major EMI Classics artists, are brought together once again in a 2CD compilation celebrating their great contribution and commitment to Schubert for the label. As well as featuring specially selected lieder and piano fragments from their critically acclaimed Bostridge / Andsnes Schubert Sonata and Lieder series, the album also includes five newly recorded lieder never previously released by Bostridge. Their partnership was described by The Times as "one of the most inspired of record-company matchmakings: the two musicians really do test and try each other at every turn, as well as being mutually supportive…” Firmly established in the opera house, concert hall and recital room, and much sought after internationally as one of the finest of his generation of tenors, Ian Bostridge is today one of the leading Schubert lieder interpreters, repertoire that he openly states as his first love. Ian’s passion for lieder dates back to early studies at his school in England. Ian explains: ‘I had a wonderful German teacher at my school who got me into German lieder and that has been the thing that has really made me a musician – the lieder.’

“An attractive compilation from EMI's 2001-02 series of Schubert Lieder and piano music. Here, it's predominantly Lieder, with just three piano fragments; but with both artists at their relaxed and creatively focused best.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2008 ****

“...from Bostridge you have intelligent word painting, effortless sense of line, langorous phrasing, and a vocal quality that is as sonorous in the upper register as it is mellow in the lower. Andsnes more than accompanies, he pushes the beauty and depth of the piano writing to the fore, whilst never unbecomingly stealing the show.” Charlotte Gardner, bbc.co.uk, 11th July 2008

“Ian Bostridge is one of the most effective Schubert voices in Europe today” The Times
