Praetorius, M: In dulci jubilo

This recital is the first ever by the girls and men of Exeter Cathedral. The programme features much previously unrecorded repertoire, reflecting the music sung by the choir throughout the Cathedral’s year.

From Michael Praetorius‘ extensive works we hear the same pieces again and again during the Christmas season, such as 'Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen' (A great and mighty wonder). Thus well-composed, but simple compositions have become well-known to a larger audience.

The aim of this recording is to emphasise the whole range of his art of arrangement, the choice being limited to five groups of hymns and two additional concertos: from simple four-part harmony to the complex contrapuntal chorale motet right up to the multi-choral vocal concert with solo voices, choir, instruments and figured bass.

The rebuilt Frauenkirche of Dresden was consecrated in October 2005. This was made possible by many fundraising ventures, including ten “drum-roll” concerts held in the newly completed interior. One of these concerts can be heard here; The Ludwig Güttler Brass Ensemble and Semper Brassplay festive Baroque music for Christmastide.
