| | | Luisi conducts Beethoven & MahlerRecorded live at the Philharmonie Munich,April 2008
In 2008 Gramophone named the present-day Staatskapelle Dresden one of the ten best orchestras in the world. Under its current principal conductor, Fabio Luisi, this venerable ensemble deploys its sumptuous sonorities on Mahler's grandiose First Symphony in a performance fulsomely praised in press reviews. The Austrian pianist Margarita Höhenrieder has enjoyed acclaim as the result of her successes in a whole series of international piano competitions.Among these awards was first prize in the prestigious Busoni Competition in Bolzano. Bonus Documentary: Margarita Höhenrieder - Portrait of an Artist “This is an exhilarating disc, and in all respects. It comes from a tour by the great Dresden Staatskapelle, one of the orchestras in the world which retains a very distinctive communal sound, slightly rugged or even gritty, with sumptuous brass and lean strings, though one never feels them to be weak. Still more exciting is Margarita Höhenrieder, a youngish pianist... who delivers a fiery, subtle, spontaneous and noble account of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1, in which she is truly in dialogue with the orchestra. The second part of the concert is a fresh, invigorating account of Mahler's First Symphony...” BBC Music Magazine, August 2009 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Murray Perahia, nominated for artist of the year in the 2008 Gramophone Awards, has often been described as an aristocrat of the piano, with good reason. His commanding vision and his supremely polished virtuosity are complemented by a luminous intelligence and a poetic sensitivity, embracing equally the lyric and the epic. His career has recently been revitalised, after many years, with the new release on Sony/BMG of Beethoven Piano Sonatas and Bach Partitas. "Each note was characterised by a singing tone whose weight and emotional colour was individually judged yet forming part of a massively conceived and controlled structure." The Guardian “Murray Perahia… is undoubtedly on tremendous form. He displays limitless reserves of strength for the bravura passages and a huge strong tenderness in, for instance, the opening of the slow movement of the Third Concerto.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2009 *** “[Perahia's] playing is peerless and Marriner gives him vital and sensitive support” Penguin Guide, 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Filmed and transmitted live at London's Royal Festival Hall “These 1974 broadcasts preserve Haitink's lively but elegant readings with the young Vladimir Ashkenazy's engaging performances.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2007 **** “the sound quality is remarkably good. The performances by a strikingly youhthul Ashkenazy are full of spirit...In many ways the Emperor is the finest of all, freshly inspired, not barnstorming, witha a beautiful, hushed slow movement. The camerawork is straightforward, as one would expect from Brian Large” Penguin Guide, 2010 *** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

In remembrance of his 90th birthday Deutsche Grammophon releases a magnificent 6-DVD-BOX with Maestro Leonard Bernstein conducting and talking about the work of Ludwig van Beethoven. From splendid places in Vienna and Amsterdam, Leonard Bernstein conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. This ambitious and accomplished box includes all of Ludwig van Beethoven´s nine symphonies, the piano concertos with Krystian Zimerman, the monumental Missa solemnis and overtures together with the string quartet Op.131, excerpts from “The Creatures of Prometheus”, the choral fantasy op. 80 and Leonard Bernstein gives engaging introductory remarks on the programmes. Leonard Bernstein says about these recordings from the late 70ies and 80ies, all directed by Humphrey Burton, that there is “no single body of work in the universe of orchestral music that is in any way comparable to this one.” “I offer [this cycle] to all music-loving ears as a testament of faith and of my most profound reactions to this greatest of all composers." (Leonard Bernstein) “Conducted with intense dedication and soaring spirits by Mr. Bernstein, these recordings are superb, both visually and aurally.” (The New York Times) 6-DVD-BOX (7 discs) in 5.1 DTS Surround Sound (also available separately) “Bernstein on form is without peer and, since his component volumes are available separately, you may want to go for the highlights. Two instalments stand out. DG 073 4497GH takes in a fun-packed First Symphony indebted to Haydn and a self-consciously earth-shattering Ninth... DG 073 4502GH contains a controversially fleshed-out Op 131, stunningly dispatched by the strings of the Vienna Philharmonic, plus a smattering of overtures including a Bernstein favourite, König Stephan. If you don't know it, you should.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2009 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
