The Nutcracker, Op. 71 (Act II)

Royal Albert Hall, London, 27 July 1981

Gennadi Rozhdestvensky was the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s Chief Conductor from 1978 – 1981. The three performances on this disc are taken from two concerts during the

1981 Proms season and represent him at the highest point of his relationship with the orchestra.

One of the premier conductors of Russian music, Rozhdestvensky is well known for his interpretations of (and love for) ballet scores, having first conducted the Nutracker at the Bolshoi aged 20.

In this complete performance of The Nutcracker’s second act, Rozhdestvensky’s deep understanding of the music and affinity for it are evident.

The 1979 recording of Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty with the BBCSO on BBC Legends was a Penguin Rosette winner – Rozhdestvensky is described as giving caring and sensitive direction, loving attention to detail, narrative drama and having light rhythmic touch and delicacy of feeling. He remains even today, one of the great interpreters of Russian music.

Ruslan & Lyudmila Overture

Suite from 'Ruslan and Lyudmila'

Valse-Fantaisie in B minor for orchestra, G. ii213

“This is a more comprehensive survey than that available on ASV with the Armenian Philharmonic under Loris Tjeknavorian. Both conductors include the two 'Spanish Overtures', the Valse-fantaisie and Kamarinskaya in closely matched performances. Sinaisky is rather faster and brighter in the first 'Spanish Overture', Capriccio on the jota aragonesa, and in the second, Souvenir d'une nuit d'été, he reflects more subtly the French grace that also lies within the music.
Both conductors give good, vivid performances of the Valse-fantaisie and Kamarinskaya, with recordings that do justice to Glinka's brilliant orchestration. Thereafter the repertoire parts company. While Tjeknavorian gives the rest of his record up to a suite of six pieces from A Lifefor the Tsar, Sinaisky prefers Ruslan and Lyudmila, with a lively performance of the overture and then the Act 3 dances and the dwarf Chernomor's grotesque little march. This gives him room for the early Overture in D minor, which doesn't often feature on records, and for the Symphony on Two Russian Themes. The work survives in only a single movement, but fascinatingly anticipates Kamarinskaya. For a highly enjoyable introduction to Glinka's orchestral music, indeed to his whole original way of thinking, this Chandos disc is the one to go for.”
Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010

“The playing of the BBC Philharmonic is both warmly responsive and sparkling and the state-of-the-art Chandos recording is superb.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition

A stunning 2CD of Russian music from Mikhail Pletnev and the Russian National Orchestra that includes a mix of the familiar and the not so familiar. Liadov’s exquisite miniature tone poems and Glinka’s effervescent overture to Ruslan and Ludmila rub shoulders with a rare Tchaikovsky overture and two preludes by Tcherepnin. All the composers here had a deep knowledge and respect for the traditional music of Mother Russia, and every work on these discs has the unmistakable sound of Russia irrespective of whether it was composed under the Tsarist or Soviet regime.

Recordings made in 1993/94

“Russian lollipops familiar (Glinka Ruslan, Borodin Prince Igor) and deeply unfamiliar (Tchaikovsky's very early Overture in F, for instance, or Nikolai Tcherepnin's Enchanted Kingdom).” BBC Music Magazine, April 2011 ****

“Pletnev is at his most successful with the more reflective introduction to Semyon Kotko, and with the beautiful evocation of dawn over the Moscow River that opens Khovanshchina. Tchaikovsky's almost unknown early overture is a curiosity. It is not hard to observe some of the features that were to distinguish Tchaikovsky's style, with hindsight, but who could have had the foresight to see the genius that would charge them?” Gramophone Magazine, December 1994

Waltz from Swan Lake

Zubin Mehta, born in Bombay in 1936, is one of the greatest conductors on the rostrum. ‚I have been conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker longer than many of its musicians have been members. I began in 1961 and since then have not missed a single season. During all those years I have been able to observe continually that the Berliner Philharmoniker sets standards for outstanding orchestral achievements.‘

The theme of his ‚St. Petersburg Night‘ at the Berlin Waldbühne is, of course, Russian music. The centrepiece is one of Tchaikovsky‘s most frequently played and effective compositions: his Piano Concerto No. 1 in B fl at minor. This work has spread the fame of Russian music all over the world. Its memorable melodies and original rhythms never fail to captivate audiences.

Daniel Barenboim, was the soloist for the Tchaikovsky concerto in Zubin Mehta‘s music night. With this combination of master conductor, master pianist and leading orchestra, success was, of course, assured. The twenty thousand people in the audience at the Berlin Waldbühne, sold out weeks beforehand, expressed their thanks with tumultuous applause.

The other works in the programme were also enthusiastically received, in particular the familiar sounds of Tchaikovsky‘s ‚Swan Lake‘ and Rimsky-Korsakov‘s orchestral scherzo ‚The Flight of the Bumblebee‘ from his opera ‚The Legend of Tsar Saltan‘, which was played with astounding virtuosity.
