James King (Paul), Karan Armstrong (Marietta / Marie’s Apparition), William Murray (Frank), Margit Neubauer (Brigitta) & Donald Grobe (Victorin) Deutsche Oper Berlin, Heinrich Hollreiser (conductor) & Götz Friedrich (stage director) Set by ANDREAS REINHARDT BANNED – FORGOTTEN Of all the successful composers of opera in the 1920s, it is perhaps Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897–1957) whose career took the most surprising turn following the banning of his works as “degenerate” in Germany. In 1934 he was invited by Max Reinhardt to Hollywood, where Korngold turned the new genre of fi m music on its head. No composer before or since ever achieved such a prominent position within film production. Instead of the director or producer deciding on a scene’s musical accompaniment, it was Korngold’s score that determined the timings and dramatic sequences of the camera positions. Even today Korngold is best known as a composer of film scores. Despite the many successful performances of works such as his violin concerto and his chamber music, today only Die tote Stadt has survived as a rarity on the programmes of the world’s major and medium-sized opera houses. Götz Friedrich’s production played no small part in this survival, for not only was it shown in Berlin and Vienna, it was also shipped to Los Angeles and more recently, in 1995, loaned to Ghent, to the theatre which in 1967 was bold enough to stage only the second production of the work after the Second World War. Sound Format: PCM Stereo Picture Format: 4:3 DVD Format: DVD 9, NTSC Subtitles: DE (Original Language), GB, IT, FR, ES Running Time: 130 mins FSK: 0 “Götz Freidrich's powerful staging of Korngold's fantasy is performed with sumptuousness, led by Armstrong's Marietta (unsteady) and King's Paul (solid).” BBC Music Magazine, February 2013 *** “[Götz Friedrich’s] richly atmospheric production...makes a strong case for the piece. James King is a believable Paul, and Friedrich, seated at his office desk, gives a lucid spoken introduction to an opera that permanently hovers on the border between dream and reality.” Financial Times, 24th November 2012 *** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Korngold: Die Tote Stadt, Op. 12
Korngold’s powerful depiction of psychological damage as a result of deep mourning was a great success from the outset and Die tote Stadt was the first German opera to be performed at the Metropolitan in New York after World War One. It is the most popular of Korngold’s operas and the Act One aria first sung by the vision of Marie, “GlÜck, das mir verlieb” has achieved enduring popularity in recitals in the concert hall as well as on record. Release includes a booklet with a three language synopsis [English / French / German], full cast list and detailed track list. “Erich Leinsdorf's 1975 account of Korngold's Die Tote Stadt...has never been bettered on disc” The Guardian, 28th August 2009 “Die tote Stadt may not be a great opera, but in a performance like this, superbly recorded, it is one to revel in on CD. Rene Kollo is powerful if occasionally coarse of tone, Carol Neblett sings sweetly in the equivocal roles of the wife's apparition and the new-comer.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Klaus Florian Vogt (Paul), Tatiana Pavlovskaya (Marietta), Michael Nagy (Fritz), Hedwig Fassbender (Brigitta), Anna Ryberg (Juliette), Jenny Carlstedt (Lucienne), Julian Prégardien (Victorin), Hans-Jürgen Laza (Graf Albert) Frankfurter Opern-und Museumsorchester & Chorus and Children‘s Chorus of the Frankfurt Opera, Sebastian Weigle Die Tote Stadt, written in 1920 was Korngold’s first and most successful opera. This is part of the OehmsClassics Live CD series with Frankfurt Opera and provides the opportunity to hear a musically and technically flawless performance. “The Frankfurt performance has great depth and resonance. This is another faultlessly cast production with some outstanding singing from the lyric tenor Klaus Florian Vogt and the dramatic soprano Hedwig Fassbender. Their vivid word-painting and turn of phrase rivets the attention, with the orchestra led by Sebastian Weigle throwing themselves heart and soul into Korngold's score.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2011 “For Klaus Florian Vogt’s achievement alone this set is worth acquiring, whatever the merits of the rest of the cast. Those merits are considerable...Tatiana Pavlovskaya, after a somewhat shaky start, is superb...The playing is fresh and colourful, tempos are well chosen and the balance, often so problematic in live recordings, is everything one could wish.” MusicWeb International, December 2012 | | | (also available to download from $21.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Korngold: Die Tote Stadt, Op. 12Recorded at Teatro la Fenice, Venice, January 2009
Stefan Vinke (Paul), Solveig Kringelborn (Marie / Mariette), Stephan Genz (Frank / Fritz), Christa Mayer (Brigitta), Eleonore Marguerre (Juliette), Julia Oesch (Lucienne), Gino Potente (Gaston), Shi Yijie (Victorin) & Mathias Schulz (Albert) Eliahu Inbal (conductor) & Pier Luigi Pizzi (director) This 2009 production from Venice’s Teatro la Fenice is the most modern production available on DVD. Erich Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt from 1920 was a huge success before he went to America and became famous for his great Hollywood film scores, but until recently it has been mostly neglected. The opera is based on Georges Rochenberg’s novel Bruges-la Morte. It tells the story of a man who, having lost his wife, takes refuge in the city of Brugue. Whilst overcome with grief he becomes obsessed with a woman who bears the same likeness as his wife. The book is notable for its poetic evocation of the decaying city and the director Pier Luigi Pizzi uses this as his inspiration for the set. Similar to his staging of Britten’s Death in Venice, Pizzi uses mist and fog on stage to evoke a sense of ghostly silence and desolation. Sound format: 16:9 Picture format: LPCM 2.0 Running Time: 148 minutes Booklet notes: Italian, English, French, German Subtitles: French, English, German, Spanish, Italian AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE Sung in German “The lighting designer, Vincenzo Raponi, ensures that no expression goes unchecked on the faces of an uncommonly fine group of singers...[Kringelborn] makes her second entrance as a vision in scarlet, very much the femme fatale, and although her character is essentially one-dimensional she makes Marietta almost human. Christa Mayer as Brigitte the comely housekeeper melts the heart with her confession.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2011 “Pizzi directs the work with welcome straightforwardness...[The Fenice players] are entirely convincing beyond the Ottocento repertoire that has been their lifeblood for so long. The veteran Elianhu Inbal is in firm control, and even if the orchestra hasn't the sheen of the great German and Austrian ensembles, it does splendidly here.” International Record Review, November 2011 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Korngold: Die Tote Stadt, Op. 12
Recorded live at the Salzburg Festival 2004 “The production by Willy Decker of Korngold's most famous opera at the 2004 Salzburg Festival created something of a sensation, and now makes its welcome arrival on CD. Georges Rodenbach's 1892 novel Bruges la morte, on which the 22-year-old Korngold and his father based the libretto, deals with a man's obsession with his dead lover. In 1920 this struck an immediate spark with audiences recovering from the aftermath of the First World War and, with Korngold's mixture of big, soupy tunes and a sort of post-Wagnerian gloom, it was an immediate hit. Although there is a good deal of noise from movements on stage, the sound quality here is exceptionally vivid for a live event. Though Denoke is no Jeritza, she has an attractive voice and joins Kerl sweetly in the famous duet 'Glück, das mir verblieb'. They both hurl themselves into the increasingly violent scenes as the fantasy affair progresses. Bo Skovhus is his usual glamorous self, doubling the roles of Fritz and Frank, the faithful guardian of his friend's sanity. Runnicles and the Vienna Philharmonic play the piece with some fire, bringing out every one of Korngold's ragbag of Puccini, Strauss and Wagner allusions. You have to be in the mood for an overdose of kitsch but when it works, as it does here, Die tote Stadt still packs a punch.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |
