Francesco Dillon (cello) & Emanuele Torquati (piano)

An original programme featuring works for cello and piano by Schumann, arrangements of works written originally for other instruments.

Schumann himself left the choice of instrument open for some of his works: the clarinet, oboe and cello often changed roles.

The Romanzen Op. 94 were originally for oboe and piano, but work very well played on the cello, as arranged by the famous 19th century cellist Grützmacher. Also the violin sonata Op. 105 fares excellently through the golden, melancholy sonorities of the cello.

Schumann lived his whole life under the spell of the great Johann Sebastian Bach, and as a tribute to Bach’s genius Schumann added a piano part to the famous Cello Suites.

This is the second issue of Schumann transcriptions for cello by the duo Francesco Dillon/Emanuele Torquati. Their earlier issue BC 94060 received enthusiastic comment in the international press: “comes across with vibrant conviction” (Musicweb International).

Schumann:

Violin Sonata No. 1 in A minor, Op. 105

Martha Argerich (piano) & Renaud Capuçon (violin)

For a significant number of people, she is simply the greatest pianist of our time. No matter what repertoire she plays, she sounds, as they say, “in her element”. Indeed, her playing is entirely lacking in vanity, yet never remotely anonymous. Nor can one even speak of “Argerich’s Beethoven” – or “Argerich’s anything else”, for that matter, since her playing of every work – of every theme or section within a work – is conceived so intensely from within that it doggedly resists categorization. Interestingly, though not perhaps surprisingly, the same variety of approach is evident in the way she plays the piano. To speak of “Argerich’s technique” is again to oversimplify. She has this technique and that technique and any number in between. What they all have in common is their naturalness, their visible “fitness for function”. Her interpretations are united by the effortlessness and pure joy of her music making and her individual approach to each work, each situation and each audience.

Jonathan Freeman-Attwood (trumpet) & Daniel-Ben Pienaar (piano)

Renowned for his outstanding technical and musical ability, as well as his unique re-workings of chamber repertoire, this latest album from Jonathan Freeman-Attwood introduces some fresh and unusual arrangements of well-known Romantic music for the under-explored medium of trumpet and piano duo.

The choice of Mendelssohn and Schumann, originally written for cello and violin respectively, allows Freeman-Attwood to demonstrate the melodic lyricism of the instrument as well as the thrilling execution a brass instrument can bring to intricate passage-work.

Grieg’s Holberg Suite has attracted arrangers since its composition; the opening Preludium is a brilliant vehicle for the trumpet and piano, fully showcasing the skills of the duo that have honed their skills over three albums.

These new transcriptions are beyond anything previously imagined for trumpet; they expand the boundaries of the trumpet as a solo instrument and deserve to take their place in the standard repertoire for the instrument.

As a trumpet player, Jonathan Freeman-Attwood has performed and recorded both as a soloist and as a member of various ensembles and has attracted plaudits from the press for his solo recordings.

Jonathan broadcasts regularly for BBC Radio 3 and is Principal of the Royal Academy of Music in London.

South African born Daniel-Ben Pienaar is an award-winning pianist whose live performances and recordings have won him widespread acclaim: “a kaleidoscope of colours and textures” (International Piano).

“Freeman-Attwood and Pienaar deliver all four pieces with tremendous panache - above all, they communicate a sense of fun - and the Linn surround-sound recording is a model of clarity and warmth.” International Record Review, April 2011

“one rather sits up at the opening Praeludium of Grieg's Holberg Suite, flutter-tonguing and all...Throughout, the trumpet-playing of Freeman-Attwood is first class. But what makes this collection doubly enjoyable is the outstandingly responsive piano contribution from Daniel-Ben Pienaar, who is always excellently balanced with the trumpet.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2011

Joao Paulo Santos (piano), Bruno Monteiro (violin)

“Monteiro has a unique sound, and it takes some getting used to. Once you've done that, bask in his unfailing artistry and musical sincerity...Santos is simply wonderful...praise goes to Bruno Monteiro and João Pablo Santos for their complete belief in the music and their willingness to put it before us. This is really very, very fine. A winner of a disc” Classical Net, March 2013

“Together the intensity of their playing makes the Schumanns’ romantic passion come alive. Monteiro has wonderfully poetic and dramatic tones while Santos gives us pianistic energy...This is no-holds-barred playing that commands the listener’s attention and holds it fast for the duration of each sonata.” Fanfare, September 2012

“His approach to Schumann's music may be characterised as approachably intellectual, with good attention to tempi and phrasing and very little vibrato. He is never drily academic, expressing emotional aspects effectively through an appealing smattering of rubato. Monteiro's violin has a tone that will not be to all tastes, however, being a little more on the fluorescent side than glowing” MusicWeb International, August 2012
