Mozart: | Missa Brevis in D major K194 Elizabeth Cragg (soprano), Deborah Miles-Johnson (contralto), Daniel Auchincloss (tenor) & Lawrence White (bass) St Albans Cathedral Choir & Sinfonia Verdi, Andrew Lucas Missa Brevis in B flat major K275 Elizabeth Cragg (soprano), Deborah Miles-Johnson (contralto), Daniel Auchincloss (tenor) & Lawrence White (bass) St Albans Cathedral Choir & Sinfonia Verdi, Andrew Lucas Regina coeli in B flat, K127 Elizabeth Cragg (soprano), Deborah Miles-Johnson (contralto), Daniel Auchincloss (tenor) & Lawrence White (bass) St Albans Cathedral Choir & Sinfonia Verdi, Andrew Lucas Fantasia in F minor for a mechanical organ, K608 Tom Winpenny (organ) |
During his years in Salzburg, Mozart wrote a series of shorter mass settings, for which he drew on the models of his senior colleague Michael Haydn. Regina coeli reveals his supreme skill at writing for the solo voice. The Missa brevis in D, K. 194 is a work of great solemnity, employing a remarkable range of expressive contrasts, whilst the Missa brevis in B flat, K. 275 is notable for its sublime lyricism and grace. The Allegro and Andante in F minor, K. 608 is regarded as Mozart’s finest work for the organ and has become one of the cornerstones of the organ repertory. The church music Mozart wrote in Salzburg is both ingenious and expressive, and has wide appeal. Our disc expands the choral focus. “Both [Masses] are performed with energy, clarity and poise by the St Albans Cathedral Choir and the Sinfonia Verdi...The penultimate section is exquisitely lovely, and finely sung by Elizabeth Cragg.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 **** “The stars of the show are, of course, the choir; and on this evidence the choral tradition at St Albans is in rude health, the tone consistent and untiring. The soloists blend well...if further recordings of this repertoire emanate from these quarters, this is sure to be worth collecting.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2013 “With an excellent quartet of soloists and expert playing from the period-instrument group Sinfonia Verdi, it remains only to hand out plaudits to the choir, which is clearly in excellent shape under Lucas's direction...The treble line is pure and confidently dispatched.” International Record Review, May 2013 |

| | | Mozart - Exsultate jubilate!and other soprano arias
‘What more could you want in these works than a soloist who places every note with joyous precision, moves from one to another so cleanly, and demonstrates at every turn such intelligent but unfussy musicianship? This is a sunny and unpretentious disc which deserves to be among the successes of the Mozart year’ (Gramophone) “Though clearly designed as a showcase for a young British singer who seems to be getting better by the minute – the presence of a number of excerpts and a double-tracked duet are evidence of that – it is nevertheless strongly focused on Mozart's Salzburg church music, offering in addition to some of the usual suspects a few relative rarities. It is also a reminder of how, even in works which make no attempts at great depth, the young composer was a marvel of fluency, grace and freshness. There are times in his teenage music when you can really feel the enjoyment he took in his own ability; on this disc you can sense it being transferred to the performances. Emma Kirkby recording some of these pieces a few years back (likewise doing Exsultate, jubilate in the alternative 'flute' version), and while Carolyn Sampson's singing does not sound like Kirkby's, her rounder voice gives the listener much the same kind of pleasure. What more could you want in these works than a soloist who places every note with joyous precision, moves from one to another so cleanly, and demonstrates at every turn such intelligent but unfussy musicianship? She also has wonderful control of dynamics, beautifully demonstrated in the restrained cadenza of Exsultate's slow middle section, or the hushed reprise of the Agnus Dei from the Coronation Mass. The orchestral accompaniments are ably conducted by Robert King, and if the choral singing is not the most polished you will hear, its lusty commitment certainly adds to the honest pleasure of the performances. This is a sunny and unpretentious disc which deserves to be among the successes of the Mozart year.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “Robert King and his choral and orchestral forces give clean and direct performances in sound that is nicely balanced and benefits from the mellow acoustic of London's Cadogan Hall. The soprano focus of interest is Carolyn Sampson, whose musical sensibility and personality are exceptional. Unreservedly recommended.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2006 ***** “What more could you want in these works than a soloist who places every note with joyous precision, moves from one to another so cleanly, and demonstrates at every turn such intelligent but unfussy musicianship? She also has wonderful control of dynamics, beautifully demonstrated in the restrained cadenza of Exsultate's slow middle section, or the hushed reprise of the Agnus Dei from the Coronation Mass. ... a sunny and unpretentious disc which deserves to be among the successes of the Mozart year.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2006 BBC Music Magazine

Mozart may have written masses of masses as a professional obligation, but that doesn't mean they are are merely workaday music. They tend towards a bright and joyful C major, amenable as the key is to the instrumentation of trumpet and drums that will make a joyful noise in a vast acoustic like that of the Stephansdom in Vienna, but they also include many tender arias, none perhaps more memorable than the soprano's solo in the Benedictus of the 'Coronation' Mass, though everyone will have their favourites, and indeed be able to discover many more in this comprehensive set. Not just the Requiem and 'Great' C minor Mass, then, whose original purposes still remain shrouded in confusion, but short, simple devotionals such as the Benedictus sit Deus; all offer a pleasing call upon our attention, especially in these stylish modern performances. 11 CD + CD ROM “As a conductor of choral music Nicol Matt has an impressive pedigree, and these performances going back over a period of a decade or so show in every way that his taste and judgement are consistently secure. This collection is absolutely thorough...taken as a whole this is a set which brings musical rewards galore and in the longer term will remain a valuable resource for anyone who owns it.” MusicWeb International, July 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
