Simon Trpceski (piano) Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Vasily Petrenko Pianist Simon Trpceski makes his Avie label debut with his first concerto recording, Rachmaninov’s Second and Third, potently partnered by Vasily Petrenko and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. 30-year-old Macedonian pianist Simon Trpceski is one of the most remarkable musicians of his generation. Here he performs technically flawless and superbly rendered versions of Rachmaninov’s notoriously challenging Piano Concertos Nos. 2 and 3. He partners with frequent collaborator Vasily Petrenko who, with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, extend their fruitful Avie association with this, the first of two recordings with Trpceski surveying Rachmaninov’s complete concertante works for piano and orchestra. Trpceski has performed extensively in the UK and has a loyal following amongst audiences of the London Symphony, Philharmonia, London Philharmonic, the Wigmore Hall and Southbank, and others. Winner of the London International Piano Competition in 2000, he was a member of the BBC New Generation scheme and winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Young Artist Award in 2003. A Gramophone Award-winning artist, his first concerto recording will be eagerly sought out. Since becoming Principal Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in 2006, Petrenko has had a galvanising effect on Classic FM’s Orchestra in the Northwest. Multiple Gramophone Awards and unanimous critical acclaim have further spread their magical brand of music-making. “Petrenko's Rachmaninov is passionate yet strikingly unsentimental. This approach fits well with that of his soloist Simon Trpceski, whose playing of this most difficult of concertos combined impish nonchalance with great muscularity. Much of it was dazzling…Trpceski dispatched the first-movement cadenza with breathtaking panache.” The Guardian “Both musicians are bursting with fire and seem joined at the hip in these accounts of Rachmaninov’s second and third piano concertos. Rhythmic momentum, glittering flourishes and plaintive musings: all the right boxes are ticked.” The Times, 6th March 2010 *** “There is nothing overstated in these performances, and yet there is nothing that goes unnoticed either: the interpretative balance is precise and inspired, the thrill of experiencing the concertos played in this way immeasurable. Trpceski was born to perform this music, and Petrenko to conduct it.” The Telegraph, 5th March 2010 ***** “Both performances show an exemplary clarity and taste, a recreation, as it were, of musical utterances rather than virtuoso warhorses...The Second Concerto's opening is naturally paced, neither perversely fast nor affectedly slow” Gramophone Magazine, April 2010 |

| | | Rattle conducts Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky & Rachmaninov
Berlin Philharmonic, Sir Simon Rattle The famous annual Berlin Phil Open-Air concert at the Berlin Waldbühne is attended by more than 20,000 people. The atmosphere is unique and unconventionally relaxed. People bring champagne, salmon and caviar, making the Waldbühne a giant picnic area. Candles are lit, transforming the area into an atmospheric venue for some of the most popular pieces of classical music. The 2009 programme has a Russian feel to it, with classic pieces by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and Stravinsky; three pieces of the core repertoire, among the most popular ones. Yefim Bronfman, an artist of international reputation and specialist in the Russian repertoire, achieves a brilliant performance of Rachmaninov's 3rd concerto. This is a superb summer night in Berlin - not only for fans of classical music. NTSC 16:9, PCM Stereo, DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 Region code: 0 Booklet Notes: English, German, French Running time: 103 mins Audience: all “Orchestral concerts al fresco don’t get more spectacular or more wide-spectrum than this. Here are Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic in the Waldbuhne, a ravine-hollowed amphitheatre outside the city… It's a gift for the consummate film crew that the 88 rows of seats, filled with brightly coloured picnickers, rise up in the late afternoon sun behind Yefim Bronfman's phenomenally clear, no-nonsense but also weighty and poetic handling of Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto. Great shots, these, and a great performance...” BBC Music Magazine, March 2010 ***** |

| | | Rachmaninov - Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 3
Barry Douglas (piano) Russian State Symphony Orchestra, Evgeny Svetlanov “Douglas's immaculate, cool playing is wonderfully contrasted with Svetlanov's passionate urgings and the very Russian sound of the orchestra; it is sometimes hard to believe, when listening to the soupy brass and the unfathomable depth of the string tone, that these recordings are only 15 years old.” The Guardian, 4th July 2008 **** “The sound of the piano comes across as perhaps a little pallid, but what Douglas does with the instrument more than makes up for it: his performance is full of virtuosity and sensitivity in equal measure. As for Svetlanov and his team, Douglas could not have received more experienced support in this music. The conductor follows every subtle inflection of the soloist’s rubato, while the orchestral playing brings a nostalgic reminder of a lost world.” The Telegraph, 16th August 2008 “Barry Douglas's performance of the First Concerto provides an arresting alternative to a more conventional approach. His brilliance has an acidulous edge that brings an unusual degree of verve and clarity to even the most thickly textured passages.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2008 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Rachmaninov - Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 3
“This coupling is a mismatch. Pletnev demonstrates affinity for Rachmaninov's style in the First Concerto, but Ousset's technically proficient playing of the Third seems solid and sadly deficient in spontaneity and imagination.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2009 *** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Emil Gilels (piano) Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, André Cluytens (Recorded 1954 & 1955) ‘Gilels was a true king of pianists and these recordings only confirm his legendary status. Here is his superlative musicianship, magisterial technique and, above all, unforgettable sonority. His Rachmaninov is among the few truly great performances of this work on disc.’ (The Gramophone) | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
