Ernani was Verdi’s fifth opera and is based on Victor Hugo’s Hernani. It takes as its starting point the theme of vengeance in all its manifold aspects and received its first performance at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice in March 1844, its success proving Verdi’s definite breakthrough as a composer. The fact that the work has been staged with increasing frequency in major opera houses in recent years is due to the renaissance of bel canto singing.

Luciano Pavarotti (Ernani), Joan Sutherland (Elvira), Leo Nucci (Carlo), Paata Burchuladze (Silva), Linda McLeod (Giovanna), Richard Morton (Riccardo) & Alastair Miles (Jago)

Orchestra & Chorus of Welsh National Opera, Richard Bonynge

“Sutherland came to Ernani too late in her career, you may feel in this late-1980s recording. Pavarotti is merely competent; somehow this melodrama never gets off the page.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2006 ***

“Bonynge brings more relish to the ryhthms, and (helped by the brighter recording) is better at exposing the colourfulness of orchestration...Sutherland's well-observed and skilfully executed staccatos in her big solo... Nucci's legato, Pavarotti's thrilling account of the Ivanov cabaletta... the orchestra are fine, the chorus excellent... there is much to like here” Gramophone Magazine, April 1998

“Sutherland gives a commanding account of the role of Elvira...Helped by the sympathetic conducting of her husband, she endearingly throws caution to the winds...On sounds terms, this reissue easily outshines its CD rivals.” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition ****

Mario del Monaco (Ernani), Ettore Bastianini (Don Carlo), Nicola Rossi-Lemeni (Don Ruy Gomez de Silva), Margherita Roberti (Elvira), Anna di Stasio (Giovanna), Athos Cesarini (Don Riccardo), Mario Rinaudo (Jago)

Orchestra del Teatro di San Carlo, Fernando Previtali

This live recording was made in Naples on 27th November 1960.

“Roberti has the measure of her role, of Verdi's idiom; her line steady in all she sings, her tone well bound...[Del Monaco's] is an all-out interpretation, with his voice blazing forth, if not, to my ears, with a lovely sound...[Bastianini] is at his most voluminous with resounding notes a-plenty, but he supplies little modulation of that grand sound and not much evidence of imagination. Don't, however, decry the effect his voice can have per se.” International Record Review, December 2011

Orchestra e Coro del Teatro Regio di Torino, Bruno Campanella

This is the first complete recording on the new opera label SoloVoce. This recording from Turin places some of the best current Italian singers in the limelight and together they relish Verdi’s score in a strong ensemble performance. Ernani is regarded as one of the “cradles” of Verdi’s compositional style. Many audible details in this early opera soon became distinctive musical traits in his later works.

“In overall performance is a convincing advocate...Daniela Dessì sings conscientiously and leaves an impression of sincerity...[Armiliato] is a tenor of impressive resources and in many effects scrupulous in method.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2010
