Acclaimed Polish-born tenor Piotr Beczala pays tribute to the Austrian singer Richard Tauber (1891–1948), one of the most widely celebrated musical celebrities of his time. Recognized by many as one of the greatest tenors in the world, Piotr is regularly praised for his artistry, immaculate musicianship, keen interpretive intelligence, and flawless, elegant delivery. A perfectly cultivated and stylish singer, he is currently at the pinnacle of his career

A prominent exponent of popular song and operetta, Tauber’s career is closely associated with operetta’s golden age in pre-war Europe

In this recording Beczala shares his deeply honed affinity for this timeless, eternally popular music – a delightful recital of operetta favourites by Lehár, Kálmán, Robert Stolz, Johann Strauss II, among others – and continues the tradition set forth by legendary predecessors like Fritz Wunderlich and Nicolai Gedda

Features special guest appearances from Anna Netrebko (“Lippen schweigen”), The Berlin Comedian Harmonists, Avi Avital, Austrian soprano Daniela Fally and a unique “duet” with Richard Tauber himself, using special 21st century technology and a recorded master from 1934.

José Carreras (tenor), Vincenzo Scalera, Ronald Schneider (piano)

Following his recovery from leukaemia in 1988 the great Spanish tenor José Carreras performed a series of comeback concerts, and this recording presents a collection of excerpts from these very special events. It includes not only operatic arias but also art-songs and items from Zarzuela, revealing the whole broad range of his repertoire.

Spanish tenor José Carreras unquestionably numbers among the most important tenors of the second half of the twentieth century, yet in the consciousness of many people his biography is not only marked by his outstanding artistic achievements. The apparent tragic end of the career of the then 41-year-old singer as a result of a life-threatening illness, his triumph over death, and the entirely unexpected re-commencement of his career as singer have become just as much a part of public memory as the appearances with his tenor colleagues Domingo and Pavarotti who, as ‘The Three Tenors’, delighted an audience of millions throughout the world. José Carerras went on to establish a foundation that has collected millions of euros used to alleviate the suffering of the sick and provide scientists with financial support for their research into leukaemia.

Nance Grant (soprano) & Geoffrey Parsons (piano)

West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Dalia Atlas

Acclaimed and cherished as one of Australia’s finest operatic artists, Nance Grant had a voice possessed with beauty and power, an ease of technique, a perfection of phrasing and taste that cemented her place in the hearts of Australian music lovers. This long overdue tribute presents one of the great sopranos from down under - in recordings previously thought lost.

Nance Grant chose to stay close to her family in Australia rather than pursue an international career, even though Sir Edward Downes insisted he could ‘fill her books’ with performances in Britain and Europe. So this double album offers those who never had the opportunity to hear her, the gift of discovering a voice of magnitude and generosity, and for those who grew up hearing her on stage, the chance to reacquaint themselves with her artistry.

The original tapes from radio broadcasts of the 1960s and ’70s have been carefully restored to give more than a hint of the majesty of Nance Grant in a characteristic range of repertoire. The recordings represent significant landmarks in the development of opera in Australia: the emerging Victorian State Opera’s enormously successful Idomeneo, re di Creta, and Maria Stuarda under the direction of Richard Divall; Australian Opera’s Ariadne auf Naxos, Fidelio and Tannhäuser with Sir Edward Downes; and one of the first of the Australian Opera/ABC collaborations presenting concert performances of Wagner operas, with Grant as Sieglinde in Die Walküre conducted by Leif Segerstam.

The programme also pays homage to Nance’s considerable concert career, including a complete song recital - Greig, Richard Hageman and Richard Strauss - with pianist Geoffrey Parsons, Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, and an excerpt from Mendelssohn’s Elijah.

Dermot Troy (tenor)

Dermot Troy (1927-1961) is acknowledged as Ireland's finest lyric tenor since John McCormack. By the time of his sudden death in 1962 he had gone on an extraordinary journey from singing as a member of a musical group in Inchicore to performing as the principle lyric tenor of the Hamburg Opera House company, one of the most prestigious in the world. He only recorded three LPs, all of which are out of print.

DERMOT TROY REMEMBERED is the first digitally re-mastered CD featuring his legendary voice, including four previously unreleased songs from the archives. We hear him sing in Irish in Fleischmann's Lament for Owen Roe, in English in a selection of favourites from Thomas Moore to Ivor Novello, in Italian singing familiar Neapolitan songs and we hear him in German singing Lehar and his beloved Mozart.

Dermot Troy had shared a stage with some of the most famous sopranos of the twentieth century, including Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland and Elizabeth Schwartzkopf. All acknowledged his potential. DERMOT TROY REMEMBERED is a fitting tribute to a singer who whose career ended tragically early.

Ramon Jaffé (violoncello) & Andreas Froelich

This disc of works by Grieg for cello and piano shows the composer at his most romantic. It also includes arrangements by the performers themselves of Grieg’s little-known songs. The two musicians interpret Grieg’s Cello Sonata op. 36, a work in which the composer fully exploits the instruments register, and the Intermezzo in A minor, a work first published in 1979 and probably representing the first movement of a suite for cello and piano that Grieg left unfinished.
