During the 1950s, 60s and 70s, Decca recorded a number of albums with some of its key conductors of Overtures. Many of these were singled out by the press for their terrific sound quality (the fabled ‘Decca Sound’) and for their often adventurous programming. Some of them also included entr’actes and intermezzi. Prized as collectors’ items, many of the original LPs exchange hands at high prices. And most of these reissues, in Decca Eloquence’s ‘Romantic Overtures’ series appear in CD, in part or whole, for the first time. Romantic Overtures – Volume 2 showcases the artistry of Piero Gamba, who conducted showpieces for Decca and partnered, among others, Ruggiero Ricci as well as Julius Katchen in his magnificent cycle of the Beethoven Concertos. This 2CD set includes his very first recording for Decca, of Rossini Overtures (1955). Five years later recorded another LP of Rossini Overtures, the only common item being William Tell (the stereo recording is truly thrilling, the record as a whole one of Decca’s best kept secrets!). Both recordings are included here (and both recordings of William Tell). The Egmont Overture was originally coupled with Katchen’s recording of Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto; and also included is all of the LP entitled ‘Adventures in Sound’ which included overtures and intermezzi by Verdi, Mascagni, Mancinelli, Martucci and Ponchielli. A real rarity is Stanley Black’s Overture to a Costume Comedy, recorded at the 1957 ‘Adventures in Sound’ sessions, but only included on a 45rpm EP in mono. This is its first release on CD and in stereo. “The LSO supports Gamba brilliantly … a natural sound, clear and with a well-defined bass” Gramophone Magazine (Rossini: 1955) “Performances throughout are good … well recorded” Gramophone Magazine (Adventures in Sound) “La gazza ladra: the battery guaranteed to batter one through the back of one’s chair … The allegros are very fast indeed [and] one is open-mouthed to find that the LSO wind players still manage to phrase with their natural artistry and the violins at the opening of the allegro in Semiramide have all their repeated notes exactly together … Gamba’s Rossini crescendos are all superbly controlled, and with the vivid stereo recording I cannot imagine anyone failing to find this disc very exciting.” Gramophone Magazine (Rossini: 1960) |

| | | Verdi: Sinfonias and Overtures
Orchestra Regionale Filarmonia Veneta ‘Gian Francesco Malipiero’, Marko Letonja Giuseppe Verdi counts as one of the most influential composers of the 19th century, not least for his consistent exploration of political themes within a cultural context. This was a time and a place when opera mattered, and placing on stage the themes of familial tension and social upheaval was a vital catalyst for his country’s own turbulent progress towards unification. The preludes and overtures to his operas fulfil different functions according to the nature of the main work, and when he wrote it. This broad selection encompasses the potpourri style of the overtures to I masnadieri and his first great triumph, Nabucco, showcasing the unforgettable melodies in a parade of expressive light and shade. The terse preludes to Aida and Otello are more designed to set the scene for what follows by heightening without anticipating the tension of the drama; and finally there are the fully worked-out, grand schemes of the overtures to La forza del destino and I vespri siciliani, which in their quasi-symphonic incorporation of the opera’s themes within an independent narrative design are worthy of the example of Beethoven whom Verdi so revered. Marko Letonja is Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted the German and Italian opera repertoire in various of the great European houses, including La traviata in Berlin, Nabucco in Dresden and The Makropoulos Case at La Scala, Milan. His Verdian pedigree is assured; as, of course, is that of the native musicians of the Orchestra Regionale Filarmonia Veneta. | | | Claudio Abbado conducts Brahms & DvorakRecorded live at the Teatro Massimo, Palermo, 1 May 2002
The town of Palermo was illuminated and Claudio Abbado revealed his strong Sicilian roots. Viewers of this concert, broadcasted on TV all across Europe, were inspired to see the maestro so relaxed, gesticulating so emphatically. This was the last time in his twelve years as the orchestra’s artistic director Claudio Abbado conducted a European Concert. The Berlin Phil played elegantissimo, with magnificent solos, mastering the ensemble passages with supreme ease. Their interpretation of Dvořák's Ninth Symphony could not have been more sophisticated and marvellous. Gil Shaham, one of the greatest violinists of our time, delivers a formidable interpretation of the complex and demanding Brahms concerto, already having recorded this concerto with Abbado in 2000. | | | Abbado conducts Brahms & DvorákRecorded live at the Teatro Massimo, Palermo, 1 May 2002
The Berlin Philharmonic annual European Concerts are intended to recall the date on which the orchestra was founded, 1st May 1882, with a performance being given on this day in a different town or city of particular cultural and historical importance. In 2002 it was the turn of the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, one of Europe’s most important opera houses both artistically and architecturally. In a programme of much-loved pieces from the classical repertoire, with the celebrated Gil Shaham as soloist,Abbado once again demonstrated how he upheld the unsurpassed orchestral tradition of the BPO with his profound music-making. Viewers of this concert, broadcast all over Europe, were inspired to see the maestro so relaxed, gesticulating so emphatically. This was the last time in his 12 years as the orchestra’s artistic director that the revered Italian maestro Claudio Abbado conducted a European Concert. Bonus Film:A Portrait of Palermo NTSC 16:9, PCM Stereo, DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 Region code: 0,Audience: all Language: German (Bonus) Subtitles: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian Booklet notes: English, German, French Running time: 112 mins + 20 mins (Bonus) “The visual element of DVDs can be distracting, but it can also add fascinating insights into a concert: seeing Claudio Abbado, gaunt but still elegant in his movements, gives extra pleasure, especially in the purely orchestral works. The real highlight of the concert is the Dvorák New World Symphony, with the Berlin players audibly and visually playing at full stretch, and imbuing the music with both colour and strength.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2010 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
