Pierre Nerini (violin)

L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Paris Conservatoire Orcheatra, Ernest Ansermet

While Ansermet's stereo Suisse Romande recording of Scheherazade is well-known and has been frequently reissued, his early (1954) Paris Conservatoire Orchestra recording of this piece is a relative rarity and here receives its first CD outing on Decca. It has, perhaps, that extra bit of fantasy over his later recording of the work and was beautifully recorded by the Producer/Engineer team of Victor Olof and James Brown at the Maison de la Mutualite in Paris. Its coupling receives its first release on CD - the Coq d'Or Suite, recorded two years earlier (in mono) and which tells the tale of the ill-advised King Dodon who meets his end by being pecked to death by a golden cockerel!

Mlada Suite

Le Coq d'Or Suite

Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral genius shines through in his colourful operatic suites, and that from his final opera Le Coq d’or is richly dramatic and expressive. The complicated folk-based story of the Snow Maiden is simplified into four enchanting movements, and that of Sadko into a single, radiantly descriptive tone-poem. The thrilling legend of Mlada is represented by vivid dances and a final Cortège. Gerard Schwarz’s recording of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade (8572693) with the Seattle Symphony was described as ‘absolutely terrific’. (ClassicsToday.com)

“the orchestral suites that Rimsky-Korsakov often extracted from his stage works often convey their textures and particular dramatic flavours very vividly...all the performances, including those of the less well-known extracts...have real energy and a touch of the necessary theatricality too.” The Guardian, 15th December 2011 ***

“The Seattle players are excellent, with a confident horn section that has plenty to rejoice in...the excerpts [from The Golden Cockerel] are more substantial, and are not only vividly presented but well-shaped. The pieces are enjoyable as lollipops; perhaps they will also encourage listeners to explore Rimsky-Korsakov's operatic legacy more fully.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2012

“it's not so much the marine atmosphere [in Sadko] or, indeed, the mood-conscious introductions to the three other works which are impressive but the way the conductor gets his Seattle players to dance...The Seattle woodwind burst with character, and there's some hair-raising trombone playing as the surreal drama of Rimsky-Korsakov's slightly scary swansong builds up a head of steam.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2012 ****

“This is exquisitely crafted, Fabergé-egg music, and Schwarz’s Seattle players revel in the exotic harmonies and orchestration.” Sunday Times, 29th January 2012

“[the disc] gives the impression of a conductor who is fully in sympathy with the music and who brings out the best, both in the works performed, and from this really rather good orchestra...Clowns is taken at a sensible tempo - not ‘hyped up’ to make it sensationalist as is so often the case. It nevertheless retains a wonderful sense of exuberance and energy.” MusicWeb International, August 2012

The Enchanted Kingdom: Prelude

A stunning 2CD of Russian music from Mikhail Pletnev and the Russian National Orchestra that includes a mix of the familiar and the not so familiar. Liadov’s exquisite miniature tone poems and Glinka’s effervescent overture to Ruslan and Ludmila rub shoulders with a rare Tchaikovsky overture and two preludes by Tcherepnin. All the composers here had a deep knowledge and respect for the traditional music of Mother Russia, and every work on these discs has the unmistakable sound of Russia irrespective of whether it was composed under the Tsarist or Soviet regime.

Recordings made in 1993/94

“Russian lollipops familiar (Glinka Ruslan, Borodin Prince Igor) and deeply unfamiliar (Tchaikovsky's very early Overture in F, for instance, or Nikolai Tcherepnin's Enchanted Kingdom).” BBC Music Magazine, April 2011 ****

“Pletnev is at his most successful with the more reflective introduction to Semyon Kotko, and with the beautiful evocation of dawn over the Moscow River that opens Khovanshchina. Tchaikovsky's almost unknown early overture is a curiosity. It is not hard to observe some of the features that were to distinguish Tchaikovsky's style, with hindsight, but who could have had the foresight to see the genius that would charge them?” Gramophone Magazine, December 1994

“Neeme Jarvi draws the most seductive response from the SNO; he consistently creates orchestral textures which are diaphanously sinuous. Yet the robust moments…are caught just as strikingly and the listener is assured that here is music which survives repetition uncommonly well.”(Penguin Complete Guide)
