Symphony No. 5 in D major, Op. 107 'Reformation'

original version

Sinfonieorchester Aachen, Marcus Bosch

Felix Mendelssohn managed the rare feat of composing twelve symphonies by the age of 15. However these string sinfonias were never published with their own opus numbers and thus regarded as ‘substandard’. The first ‘real’ symphony dates from 1824 and was published as no.1, a few years later he composed his fifth. This live recording offers superb interpretations of the two works, whose origins are so close to each other and allows fascinating insights into the musical world of the young Mendelssohn.

Mendelssohn - Symphonies No. 1 & 4

Mendelssohn:

Ruy Blas Overture, Op. 95

Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 11

Symphony No. 4 in A major, Op. 90 'Italian'

Mendelssohn was only fifteen when he composed his First Symphony by which time he had already written twelve string symphonies. His Symphony No. 4, widely known as the 'Italian' is one of Mendelssohn's most loved compositions. The Ruy Blas overture was written for a play by Victor Hugo.

The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Andrew Litton began their cycle of Mendelssohn’s symphonies with Symphony No. 2 ‘Hymn of Praise’ which was described as ‘suitably glowing’ by the reviewer in Financial Times, and ‘alert and vigorous’ in BBC Music Magazine.

“...there’s no denying that this is an enjoyable account of [this] perennial work, with woodwind playing both crisp and expressive, luminous string textures and well-judged tempi” Sunday Times, 10th January 2010 ***

“…one of the most enjoyable discs I've listened to in a long time… Litton, for my money, gets it right every time. He… makes clear distinctions between fast and slow: in the Italian Symphony, the first movement goes like the wind, though with no sense of undue haste, while the third movement still retains the grace and dignity of the minuet from which it derives. How good, too, to come across a conductor who is not afraid to make his orchestra play pianississimo! ...one of the most delicious moments comes near the start of the second movement of the Italian Symphony where the strings are joined by the two flutes, both vibrato-free. At the other extreme, the C major coda of this movement lifts you out of your seat.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2010 *****

“From the hushed polyphony of the slow introduction [of the First]...to a truly exultant finale, Litton and his spruce Bergen orchestra banish any hint of turgidity. Tempo and character are acutely judged...Litton's Scottish likewise combines verve, textual clarity and a vivid sense of atmosphere.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2010

Yaara Tal & Andreas Groethuysen (piano duo)

Piano duo Tal & Groethuysen returns with a recording of works by Mendelssohn which he adapted himself from the large-scale chamber and orchestral versions they are usually heard in.

The 19th century was the heyday of the four-handed piano duet, a form of music-making that provided music-lovers with the opportunity to perform orchestral and vocal works in their own home that they could otherwise only hear in the concert hall or on stage. Released in the 200th anniversary year of his birth, Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was a gifted pianist himself and very fond of domestic music-making. He only wrote a handful of original works for piano duet, but the catalogue of his works contains no fewer than 18 arrangements of his own pieces for four-handed piano, among them two symphonies, a string quartet, several overtures and the entire score of his incidental music for Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

“Brilliant virtuosity in the composer's own arrangements of his Octet and First Symphony. Generous pedaling reduced the impact of the lithe cello parts in the Octet, but this version of the Symphony is extremely effective.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2009 ****

“…a keen appreciation of structure, a scintillating range of colours and a compelling lightness of touch. If an alien landed on Earth and had his first experience of Mendelssohn via these performances, he'd marvel at the wonder of the music and never have an inkling it could have been conceived for anything other than these forces.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2009

“These are Mendelssohn’s own arrangements of his early works. The Octet in E flat, for strings, sublime masterpiece of his 17th year, remains felicitious, captivating and touching in this piano-duo version, played with stylishness and vigour by the Israeli Yaara Tal and the German Andreas Groethuytsen” Sunday Times, 28th june 2009 ***

“Tal and Groethuysen make light of all complexities in this zestful work.” The Observer, 21st June 2009
