Choeur et Orchestre de L`Opera de Monte-Carlo “Although Giordano's operas are often sneered at by refined musicologists, those with a taste for verismo rate this 1969 recording very highly. The trio of Magda Olivero, Mario del Monaco and Tito Gobbi, under the baton of Lamberto Gardelli, give the piece for all it's worth, plus a bit more.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2007 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Fedora is an opera in three acts by Umberto Giordano set to an Italian libretto by Arturo Colautti and based on the play Fédora by Victorien Sardou. It is one of the most notable works of Giordano. The Opera has seen a resurgence in recent years, for example, with this stunning recording by two of the world’s greatest ever opera singers, Placido Domingo and Angela Gheorghiu. “Both [Domingo and Gheorghiu] give highly assured and vividly characterised performances...[they] sing with the requisite ardour and commitment, stirring up a storm in the long final duet...Alberto Veronesi’s conducting keeps crashing vulgarity at bay. Those who like this sort of thing will like this very much indeed.” The Telegraph, 3rd February 2011 **** “[Domingo] has plenty of heart, a key ingredient in a part whose dramatic requirements are few apart from appearing ardent, unfortunate, and misunderstood. Backed by stage experience in the opera, Domingo conveys these qualities easily...Veronesi, with the orchestra and chorus of La Monnaie in Brussels, lavishes affection on Giordano’s score” The Times, 14th January 2011 *** “Fedora herself is the crux of the opera, and Angela Gheorghiu brings the full weight of her imposing, aloof delivery to the role.” The Independent, 21st January 2011 *** “the refulgence [of Domingo's tone] is heart-warming. One is constantly having cause to revise, or to regard as incomplete, any written estimate of Domingo's career as a singer, and here is another instance...The generous provision of small parts is made the most of, and recorded sound is clear and spacious.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2011 “[Domingo] communicates splendid dramatic involvement throughout his performance here...both charm and white-hot passion are required, and in neither department is Domingo lacking...the middle voice remains as burnished as ever...The Monnaie orchestra plays with great beauty and accomplishment under Alberto Veronesi.” International Record Review, March 2011 “[Domingo] sings with tremendous refinement” The Guardian, 10th February 2011 *** “Domingo is simply phenomenal, given that he turned 67 the month the recording was made, sounding ardent if sometimes, not surprisingly, vocally pressed. There are fine performances in secondary roles...and impressively idiomatic conducting by Alberto Veronesi.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2011 *** “in Angela Gheorghiu [the title-role] gets an interpreter of impeccable vocal beauty and dramatic power...the luminous and mysterious glow of [Domingo's] voice is no longer what it was, but he more than compensates with irresistable passion, dramatic weight and still-super-secure top notes.” Classic FM Magazine, April 2011 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Live Recording from The Teatro Alla Scala, 1993
Set Design by LUISA SPINATELLI Arthaus presents Fedora, an opera by Umberto Giordano, an influential composer of Italian verismo style. The staging was celebrated for its fantastic cast with Mirella Freni in the title role and Plácido Domingo as her opponent turned lover. As the soprano in the title role tends to dominate the work and her substantial tenor counterpart is no less important, the performances of the two lead roles are important to the success of the opera. Who could be better suited to meeting to this challenge, than Mirella Freni, who shows her amazing ability as mature singer, taking vocal control of every situation and Placido Domingo, who, his perfect condition never faltering, takes advantage of all the opportunities presented by the role. Gianandrea Gavazzeni (1909-1996), whose familiarity with the verismo style was second to none, led the performance with solicitous authority upholding the tradition that he had received from the hands of his predecessors. This production created by Lamberto Puggelli for Mirella Freni at La Scala in 1993 became an enormous success, showing her as an operatic tragedienne with truly overwhelming vocal resources. Sound Format: PCM Stereo, DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 Picture Format: 16:9 DVD Format: DVD 9, NTSC Subtitle Languages: IT, GB, DE, FR, ES Running Time: 113 mins FSK: 0 “Giordano's lush verismo tale of jealousy and revenge never quite rivals Puccini, but in this splendid Scala performance Domingo and Freni almost persuade us that it does.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2011 ***** “valuable for capturing not only the moving characterization of the heroine, Fedora, by Mirella Freni, but for the glorious singing of Placido Domingo...The veteran conductor, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, is brilliant at bring out the colour and drama of the piece.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

plus: A New Portrait of Mirella Freni
2010, the year of her 75th birthday and the 55th anniversary of her stage debut. Mirella Freni is one of the most remarkable soprano singers in the world of opera. She has been winning over audiences for half a century with her ever fresh and youthful vocals and with a voice quality which remains undiminished. The portrait shows Mirella Freni during masterclasses in her hometown of Modena; in an extended interview, filmed in the Teatro Comunale, Freni speaks about her extraordinary career. Interviews with colleagues and friends such as famous tenor Plácido Domingo and conductor Herbert von Karajan as well as Freni’s greatest stage performances, private pictures and rare material from the archive complete the portrait. „I am really touched by this movie. I feel honoured by its sensitive presentation of my life, my career, my work as a teacher and my feelings about all these aspects.“ Mirella Freni „It was always most enjoyable to sing with her. I remember our joint performances with a lot of pleasure and also a certain melancholy.” Plácido Domingo „She is a born singer. When she is on stage, everything sings - her voice, her technique, her art and her heart.“ Carlos Kleiber „an artist who did everything she could to remain as she was. A simple human being with a big heart.” Herbert von Karajan Sound Format: PCM Stereo (Doc), PCM Stereo, Dolby Stereo (La Bohème) PCM Stereo, DD 5.1, DTS 5.1 (Fedora) Picture Format: 16:9 (Documentary) 4:3 (La Bohème, Fedora) DVD Format: 2 x DVD 9, 1 x DVD 5, NTSC Subtitle Languages: IT, GB, DE, FR, ES Running Time: 58 mins (Doc) 116 mins (La Bohème) 113 mins (Fedora) FSK: 0 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
