Svjatoslav Richter Concert 1993

Svjatoslav Richter Concert 1993

Gershwin:

Piano Concerto in F major

Saint-Saëns:

Piano Concerto No. 5 in F major, Op. 103 'Egyptian'

This recording of the 1993 Schwetzingen Festival has already achieved cult status. The then, 78 year old Sviatoslav Richter plays for the first and last time in public Gershwin's jazzy Concerto in F-sharp. Gershwin's works had always been suspect under the Soviet regime. All the more surprising was Richter's decision to perform this work in his maturity. Needless to say, Richter never made a formal, studio recording of this work. It is not only a unique recording, but also a document of Richter's expansive interest in all musical repertoires than came under his purview. The Fifth Piano Concerto by Camille Saint-Saëns was eclipsed by the same composer's more popular "Second" Concerto throughout Richter's performing career. With the exception of one album, he never again recorded this work and there is no record that he ever again performed it internationally. With this concert, there can be no dispute that we are dealing with a real rarity.

“Recorded when Richter was in his late 70s, the Saint-Saens is musically captivating” BBC Music Magazine, May 2017 ***

Piano Concerto in F major

Lincoln Mayorga (piano)

Of Thee I Sing Overture

Preludes (3)

(1930s arrangement by Roy Bargy) - first recording

Harmonie Ensemble / New York, Steven Richman

Working from Gershwin’s original manuscripts, Steven Richman and the Harmonie Ensemble/New York recapture the lean, unsentimental style the composer intended for 'An American in Paris' and 'Concerto in F', here featuring Lincoln Mayorga as the piano soloist. Also included are the first recordings of the Overture to 'Of Thee I Sing' (radio version) and Roy Bargy’s orchestration of the 'Three Preludes' [pianist and arranger with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra]. Lincoln Mayorga was staff pianist for Walt Disney Studios and composed music for the TV show ‘Fame’. He has recorded works by Chopin, Brahms, and Prokofiev, as well as songs by Gershwin and Kern with the late Marnie Nixon. He was also soloist on the 'Gershwin by Grofé' and 'Symphonic Jazz: Grofé and Gershwin', which included the premiere recording of Gershwin’s Second Rhapsody as arranged by Ferde Grofé.

“The Concerto in F hasn’t sounded so fresh, so idiomatic and so rhythmically alive since Earl Wild’s classic RCA recording, no small thanks to piano soloist Lincoln Mayorga’s ability to fuse his brilliant classical technique with a genuine feeling for Gershwin’s syncopated language and bluesy inflections … No Gershwin fan should miss this disc.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2016

“Textually and texturally, this is Gershwin with a breath of fresh air, light, dry, nothing hammy or the slightest bit overdone. It includes rarely heard versions of the Three Preludes and the Overture to Of Thee I Sing. But in what amounts to Gershwin with period flavour, the real surprise is An American in Paris, without the treacle.” The Irish Times, 1st September 2016

“The first track, the Overture to Of Thee I Sing, immediately sets the tone — not the overture as we usually hear it, but the 1934 radio version, trimmed in length and with lean orchestration. The Concerto in F benefits from nimble playing from pianist Lincoln Mayorga and the composer’s original intentions for the orchestration. An American in Paris is quick on its feet, performed with youthful zest and slimmed-down sound by the Harmonie Ensemble, New York.” Financial Times, 26th August 2016

“This is another tremendous Gershwin anthology from Steven Richman and I enjoyed it mightily. The recordings are bright, dynamic and positive. The sound is up-front and bold although not in an aggressive sense. The engineers have come up with a result that suits the music and the performances ideally. Donald Rosenberg’s notes are excellent. If, like me, you love George Gershwin’s music you must hear this album.” MusicWeb International, 3rd November 2016

Almost 100 years ago, Gershwin had already started experimenting with the sounds of everyday life into his music, using his background of jazz, classical and modern and traditional music. The performers on this recording were winners of the 2010 ARD Competition and their skills combine to make this recording a dazzling display of Gershwin’s music.

Piano Concerto in F major

Second Rhapsody

I Got Rhythm Variations

George Gershwin’s Concerto in F was a response to demands for a ‘proper concerto’ after the success of Rhapsody in Blue, avoiding programmatic content while providing a feast of tunes both uplifting and nostalgic. Originally intended as music for a film, his up-beat Rhapsody No. 2 describes the bustling Manhattan cityscape while under construction. Sourced from his hit musical Girl Crazy, I Got Rhythm Variations was Gershwin’s last full score.

Young soloist Orion Weiss is already established in the US and is rapidly making a name on the world concert stage. The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra lead by JoAnn Falletta already has a large Naxos following through acclaimed releases such as Corigliano’s The Red Violin (8559671).

Pianist Orion Weiss holds a leading position among American musicians of his generation. His impressive list of awards includes the Classical Recording Foundation’s Young Artist of the Year Award, the Gilmore Young Artist Award, an Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Gina Bachauer Scholarship at The Juilliard School and the Mieczysław Munz Scholarship.

JoAnn Falletta serves as Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic and Virginia Symphony in the United States and Principal Conductor of the Ulster Orchestra in Northern Ireland. Her Naxos recordings include the double GRAMMY® Award winning disc of works by John Corigliano and GRAMMY® nominated discs of works of Tyberg, Dohnányi, Fuchs, Schubert, and Respighi.

“Orion Weiss never engages in the kind of exaggeration which some pianists have used to define their identity and his dry rhythmic delivery is thoroughly idiomatic...All these pieces get snappy performances in well-balanced, clear recordings: an enjoyable collection.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2012

“The real star...is the band, who play with great gusto throughout...True, they may seem a little splashy under pressure, but that matters less when the music-making is as infectious as this...A decent concerto, but the fillers steal the show.” MusicWeb International, June 2012

Never did classical music and jazz come so close as during the 1920s. The first sounds from this period bear witness to the vitality of the partnership: long before the concepts of popular and serious music existed, there had been contacts between the kind of music which demands structured listening, whose laws are those of the ears alone, and the kind which works physically, whose meaning is not exclusively to be found in what can be heard. This polarisation makes itself felt in the twentieth century by virtue of the fact that European composers begin to take an interest in jazz, a variant form which brought powerful consequences.
