In 1960, the Stuttgart-born conductor Karl Münchinger (1915-1990), made a Decca recording of Pachelbel’s Canon and Gigue that assured the piece its immortality in years to come. Münchinger recorded extensively for Decca with his Stuttgarter Kammerorchester (Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra). Moderate-size forces, rhythmic sprightliness and judicious ornamentation were the hallmarks of his recordings of 17th and 18th-century repertoire, and their general airiness also informs his readings of the Serenades on this anthology. The Dvorak, Suk and Wolf recordings date from the 1970s, whereas the Grieg, which he only recorded once, and has been on many “reissue request” lists, dates from 1956. This generous CD, released to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his death and nearly 80 minutes long, is comprised entirely of first international CD releases. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Favourite Works for Strings
Fourth release on ONYX from Moscow Soloists and this time it’s a popular disc of string favourites that have beein their repertoire from the very beginning: Grieg and Tchaikovskys’ homages to the forms of baroque and classical music and one of the favourite works from a composer who inspired them so much, Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik. This disc should be particularly easy to sell as the group play these works very often in concert as party-pieces. ONYX and Moscow Soloists have enjoyed a very successful run: their first two discs (ONYX4007/ONYX4017) won a Grammy Nomination and Grammy Award respectively and their most recent recording of Tan Dun and Takemitsu (ONYX4027) has got great reviews so far. Yuri Bashmet has also appeared on two other ONYX discs: his recent recital with Mikhail Muntian called Reminscences (ONYX4032) and as viola player in Julian Rachlin’s all-star Shostakovich disc (ONYX4026). “The innate classicism of the Grieg and Tchaikovsky is felt as well as heard in deft articulation and elegant nuancing so that the Mozart, far from being the odd man out, is very much a kindred spirit.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2009 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Greig: Peer Gynt and Holberg Suitesand works by Sibelius
“Very impressive indeed. Somehow one feels that one could stretch out and touch the players, so vivid is the sound here. In the Peer Gynt movements, there's much greater range and separation. Peer Gynt is most beautifully done. At times you might think the wind could have been a shade more distant, particularly in the 'By the seashore' movement but there's no want of atmosphere here – quite the contrary! Not to put too fine a point on it, this is a marvellous recording. In the Holberg Suite, the sound has marvellous clarity and definition as well as exemplary range. For some tastes it may be a little too sophisticated but one's admiration for it remains undimmed. The playing throughout is beautifully cultured and there's wonderful lightness and delicacy. The present issue is Karajan's third account of 'The Swan of Tuonela' and it's regrettable that he never committed to disc the four Legends in their entirety. It's as powerful and atmospheric an account as ever recorded, and the remaining two pieces, 'Valse triste' and Finlandia, reinforce the feeling that this partnership has never been equalled. The stirring account of Finlandia is incredibly wide-ranging – the orchestral playing is really in a class of its own.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Scandinavian Serenade
Returning to the catalogue, at budget price for the first time, is the delicious recording by Marriner and the Academy of Scandinavian works. The Holberg Suite was recorded in 1970, whereas the rest of the program was taped seven years later. All of the recordings were made in the stunning Kingsway Hall acoustic. “This programme of Scandinavian pieces, slight though the items may be, is all popular in the most attractive way; and shows the particular qualities of both Sir Neville and his Academy at their best - the playing always alert, yet with feeling in the more deeply expressed pieces like Grieg's Elegiac Melodies ... The sound of the CD is absolutely first rate and the disc is highly recommended ... Playing and recording, in fact, could hardly be better” Gramophone Magazine | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

“this is still as fresh and vivid a collection of Grieg's orchestral pieces as you're likely to find, with the Gothenburg orchestra in fine form.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2013 ***** |
