Thomas Trotter (organ)

DVD Video (region free, PAL/NTSC) & Audio CD

The debut DVD from Thomas Trotter – one of the world’s greatest organists – and the first DVD release from Regent Records. An opportunity to enjoy, both visually and aurally, Thomas Trotter’s artistry and staggering technique in a celebration of town hall virtuosity, on the great concert hall organ with which he is intimately acquainted.

Features a highly entertaining and varied programme of organ pieces from the heart of the town hall tradition, including Thalben-Ball’s Variations on a theme of Paganini played almost entirely on the pedals.

Extra features include a biographical interview with Thomas Trotter and a guide to the Town Hall organ.

Box contains both a DVD Video (performance in 5.1 surround sound), audio CD, and a 16 page booklet with notes on the music, the Town Hall, and a newly-written article on the history of the organ by Nicholas Thistlethwaite.

“should you want Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture on the organ, this is a recording to turn to. Trotter plays everything from memory, unusually among organists and even more remarkable given the complex registrations involved here.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2012 ****

“Filming an organist playing a recital is a notoriously difficult assignment...[It is] difficult to get all the elements right. This film comes as close as any...Trotter operates with a sleight of hand that's as slick as any conjurer's. The performances are everything on has come to expect from one of the world's greatest organists, notable for their clarity, rhythmic buoyancy, stylistic taste, imaginative colouring - and the ability to amaze.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2012

Leroy Anderson etched out his own unique place in American music – a composer rigorously trained in the classical tradition whose records topped the pop charts, a meticulous arranger of music whose own melodies were crafted with inventive precision. Here, in the first complete cycle of Anderson’s orchestral music, the Anderson family has made available several pieces that the composer did not release, with some first recordings scattered among the familiar and not-so-familiar titles. Volume Three includes the notorious musical gem The Typewriter, in which the machine is transformed into a relentlessly busy percussion instrument, the tasteful and soul-satisfying Suite of Carols for Brass Choir, and Anderson’s biggest hit, Sleigh Ride.

“This volume has its quota of favourites – Plink,Plank, Plunk!, Sandpaper Ballet, Sleigh Ride, TheTypewriter and The Syncopated Clock among them, though there are also several pieces never before recorded. Mother's Whistler especially is so immediately engaging that one can only wonder why. Though the charm of other pieces such as Melody on Two Notes may be less immediate, it is ultimately hardly less real.
Of the rest, Harvard Sketches is a successor to the Harvard Fantasy that first attracted Arthur Fiedler to Anderson's gifts in 1936. Like Vol 2, this also has its share of Anderson adaptations, including one of his suites of carols – this time for brass – and three straight arrangements.
Perhaps “straight” is not an apt description, though, in so far as Anderson was ever one to add his own distinctive twist. In Old MacDonaldHad a Farm he introduces some distinctly comical additional effects, while in Seventy-Six Trombones he cleverly highlights the debt Meredith Willson owed to the marches of Sousa.
Performances are technically and interpretatively outstanding, with utmost fidelity to the style and tempi of Anderson's own recordings.
Richard S Ginell's notes add to our appreciation of a composer too readily taken for granted.”
Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010

“The winning Anderson formula continues… Performances are technically and interpretatively outstanding, with utmost fidelity to the style and tempi of Anderson's own recordings.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2008

Sabine Meyer (clarinet)

Trio di Clarone

"Paris Mécanique" presents some of the most charming and unique small works from the early 20th century in new arrangements done especially for Sabine Meyer, and Trio di Clarone Clarinet player Sabine Meyer is regarded as one of the most outstanding soloists of our time. Since her debut at the age of 16, she has performed with more than 150 professional orchestras around the world.

“A winning trip back to the days when the joint was really jumping in Paree. – I guess you’d call this CD headlined by Sabine Meyer’s clarinet group Trio di Clarone and barrel organ specialist Pierre Charial a concept album – but, as it’s a winning concept, that’s no problem. ‘Paris méchanique’ is a celebration of Parisian cultural life during the early years of the 20th century.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2008
