"On wings of song" - Heine's words and Mendelssohn's immortal melody, sung here by the inimitable Rita Streich, perfectly encapsulate the spirit of this collection. Six of the greatest voices of the last half-century perform a range of familiar music: romantic Wagner from Gré Brouwenstijn and collectors' items such as Egk's four Italian songs from the matchless Irmgard Seefried. These were the commanding voices of their day, from Christa Ludwig's warm mezzo, to Gundula Janowitz's crystalline soprano and the dramatic brilliance of Galina Vishnevskaya, all captured in their prime. “With Vishnevskaya the odd-Russian-out, these 1960s films preserve the art of female singers mostly in the German Lied repertoire. Visual and sonic quality is variable, platform manners quaint, but the vocalism regularly excellent.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2009 **** | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

Bertrand Chamayou (piano) During his tragically short life, Felix Mendelssohn produced an extensive output of music covering every genre. Although he claimed that he took little pleasure in writing for the piano and felt that it was not an area of composition that he was particularly good at, the music itself has always retained a place in the affection of performers. After the sonatas of his early youth, he concentrated mostly on producing short pieces which could more readily be put together during the limited gaps in his busy professional life. The anthology selected for this recording by Bertrand Chamayou interweaves many of these shorter works with more substantial pieces, and includes some rarely performed music alongside established masterpieces like the “Songs without words “The Songs Without Words are among the least difficult of the pieces here technically, but the other pieces are much more demanding… It says much for Chamayou's virtuosity and artistry that he makes the results so magnetic.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2008 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

Renaud Capuçon (Guarneri del Gesù, 1737 violin) & Jérôme Ducros (piano) Renaud Capuçon is following in the footsteps of the great violinists of the past century, such as Heifetz, Kreisler and Menuhin, with this virtuoso programme of compositions, transcriptions and arrangements for the violin and piano, recorded in the Lugano Festival 2007. “Not since the emergence of Vengerov and Repin has such an exciting young violinist come our way.” International Record Review “Capuçon’s violin transcriptions rarely disappoint. If it’s not his fervour that amazes, it’s his delicacy. Elgar’s La Capricieuse is a melting wonder, Prokofiev’s Masks a bracing stomp. The programming sprinkles the firecrackers with pensive surprises (Roxana’s Song from Szymanowski), waltzing Strauss, and the finale is unusually reflective – two Schumann songs. A delight.” The Times, 18th April 2008 **** “It seems there is nothing Capuçon cannot do. He maintains the same level of tonal purity and lustrousness at all dynamic levels across all four strings… His phrasing and timing is immaculate, his intonation ear-ringingly true and - especially important in this repertoire - his exquisitely subtle use of portamento is such as to rival even Kreisler and Heifetz.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2008 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
