The Armonico Consort return to disc on Signum (following their highly-regarded Naked Byrd CD series) with a new disc celebrating the glorious combination of soprano and trumpet in baroque music – featuring the soaring talents of Elin Manahan Thomas and Crispian Steele-Perkins. Widely-praised for their imaginative and inventive programming, this disc features works by JS Bach (Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen), GP Telemann (Trumpet Concerto in D major), Alessandro Scarlatti (Su le sponde del Tebro) and a special compilation of works by Handel devised by Crispian Steele-Perkins. “The tone is immediately set by Crispian Steele-Perkins' trilling trumpet on
Bach's "Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen", which also features quite thrilling
counterpoints between him and soprano Elin Manahan Thomas...[The Scarlatti's] most affecting passage is "Infelici miei lumi", where Thomas's heartbreaking vocal is borne on a haunting meniscus of strings.” The Independent, 28th July 2012 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | This is the dayMusic on royal occasions
This new album recollects and celebrates some of the choral music heard on royal occasions during the lifetime of HM Elizabeth II. The music chosen reflects the personal choices and commission by the Royal Family for weddings, funerals, and anniversaries. Featuring John Rutter’s celebratory royal wedding anthem This is the day, written for the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton at Westminster Abbey in 2011. Newly orchestrated exclusively for this recording, it reminds us of the event that captivated the attention of the nation last year. The CD also includes a new arrangement for unaccompanied choir of the Londonderry Air to the text I would be true, and an orchestration of Schubert’s beautiful Psalm 23 - The Lord is my Shepherd by John Rutter for this recording. “Elin Manahan Thomas is impressive with her poise and limpidity...The Cambridge Singers, outstandingly fresh and communicative throughout under John Rutter's expert, energising direction, excel particularly in a superbly buoyant, incisive performance of the 'Choral Dances' from Britten's Gloriana...Of its type, this is a virtually unimproveable collection.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2012 ***** “it's all beautifully sung. Elin Manahan Thomas performs Mozart's Laudate Dominum with effortless grace, whilst the Cambridge Singers are chameleon-like in their ability to take on different musical styles...Light, joyous, and beautifully performed, this is sacred choral easy listening of the highest standard.” Charlotte Gardner, bbc.co.uk, 16th May 2012 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Danielle de Niese: The Beauty of Baroque
Since her early success in Glyndebourne’s now famous production of Handel’s Giulio Cesare, Danielle de Niese has become most closely associated with the music of the Baroque. The New York Times commented: “A voice seductive enough to woo gods as well as mortals”. With her third solo album, Danielle de Niese embodies the Beauty of the Baroque with an album of arias from the English, German, and Italian traditions, accompanied by the leading European Baroque orchestra, The English Concert, under Harry Bicket. Many popular arias feature, including Handel’s, ‘Ombra mai fu’, and highlights from JS Bach’s Cantatas are contrasted with much loved solo songs by Purcell and Dowland. Decca’s star countertenor Andreas Scholl joins Danielle de Niese for duets including the ravishing duet “Pur ti miro” from Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea. “It's an intriguing and enjoyable programme...The English Concert provides suitable support throughout, from solo theorbo on Dowland's "What if I never speed?" to the trio of harpsichord, theorbo and viola da gamba with her delightful duet with counter-tenor Andreas Scholl” The Independent, 10th June 2011 **** “This is a charming recital that shows this popular soprano at her best...she has plenty of vivacity and fresh-toned sweetness. Guardian Angels, from Handel’s “The Triumph of Time and Truth”, is a highlight: a little-known but beautiful aria, sung here with poise and allure.” The Telegraph, 7th July 2011 **** “she keeps things light on this disc, and for the greater part only shows off her many splendid advantages. Indeed, her flirtatious performance of the famous lute-song Come again can rank as one of the most captivating on disc. The duets with Scholl are a delight too. De Niese's sheer joy in singing leaps off the CD and her emotional immediacy is hard to resist.” Classic FM Magazine, August 2011 **** “In Dowland's Come again, sweet love doth now invite and What if I never speed?, she sounds like a sexier Emma Kirkby...The English Concert under its Music Director Harry Bicket provides the stylish orchestral and instrumental backing...You really hear the personality behind the voice - the 'Beauty of the Baroque' is, without question, a real artist.” International Record Review, July/August 2011 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Lucia Popp (soprano), Carole Dawn Reinhardt (trumpet) & Jorma Hynninen (baritone) Amsterdam Chamber Orchestra, Marinus Voorberg Johann Sebastian Bach’s great cantata ‘Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen’ provides the title of this 1982 recording by the distinguished soprano Lucia Popp, which also includes sacred works by Telemann and Handel. The recordings derive their very special attractiveness from the interaction of two quite exceptional artists. At this time Lucia Popp was at the height of her powers and among the most sought-after sopranos in the world, whilst the trumpeter Carole Dawn Reinhardt had become the first woman to be awarded the Vienna Music Academy’s coveted “Diploma for brass instruments”. The great Finnish baritone Jorma Hynninen took the baritone part in this production, which also features the conductor Marinus Voorberg and the Amsterdam Chamber Orchestra with a group of specially selected instrumental soloists. “Popp is her predictably superb self. | | | The People Shall Hear! (Great Handel Choruses)
This stunning program of Baroque choral masterpieces comprises the best-loved moments from Handel’s oratorios and anthems, including ‘Zadok the Priest’ and the Hallelujah chorus. Solos from Alexander’s Feast and Athalia are sung by renowned Handel specialists Carolyn Sampson and Robin Blaze. The Bach Choir (which gave performances in Australia in 2008) is an institution in the golden British oratorio tradition, its musical directors including Ralph Vaughan Williams, Sir David Willcocks, and now David Hill, who conducts on this recording. “the Bach Choir sing with appropriate vigour and spirit under David Hill’s enthusiastic direction…producing the obligatory tingle down the spine.” Gramophone “The finely focused Bach Choir often sounds uncannily of almost chamber proportions, in 'The many rend the skies' (Alexander's Feast), and the wondering description of Christ's miracle in Handel's self-confessed favourite chorus, 'He saw the lovely youth', from Theodora.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2009 **** | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
