Schumann:

Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54

Recorded live at Stadthalle Erlangen, 1991

Tchaikovsky:

Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 23

Recorded live at the Gasteig, Munich, 1991

A new release of the series of Metropolitan Munich programs.

Today Daniel Barenboim is internationally recognized and revered as an orchestral and operatic conductor, pianist, and a musical ambassador and also as a humanitarian. Partnering him is the remarkable conductor Sergiu Celibidache. “He was one of the greatest musicians I ever encountered”, says Barenboim. Sergiu Celibidache has been called a musical giant, a magician, a brilliant lion-tamer and an enfant terrible of classical music. He was a legend in his own lifetime, mesmerizing orchestras audiences and critics with his intensity and brilliance.

Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1 is one of the most popular of his compositions and among the best known of all piano concerti. The Schumann concerto is no less influential with its influence heard in Grieg’s Piano Concerto. Both works show Barenboim at his consummate best.

“These 1991 performances exchange surface excitement for a poetic probing of the music's deeper undercurrents, with spellbinding results. A triumph.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2012 *****

“every bit as compelling as these starry names might suggest. Speeds are generally on the stately side, but the adrenalin count and musical intensity is on such a high setting that I can't imagine anyone even noticing.” International Record Review, June 2012

Martha Argerich (piano)

Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 120

Symphonic Etudes: Adagio and Allegro brilliante

Orchestration: Peter I. Tchaikovsky

Excerpts from Carnaval

Orchestration: Maurice Ravel

Martha Argerich has long been hailed as one of the greatest and most uniquely imaginative pianists.

This legendary Argentinean musician is surrounded by an aura of mystery: some find her too uncompromising, others generous and beautiful, yet to all she is without doubt incredibly talented.

When Argerich and Chailly performed the Schumann Piano Concerto it created a musical sensation! The connection between Argerich and Chailly underlines the whole work, and heartfelt applause sparks a charming encore: ‘‘Vom fremden Ländern und Menschen’’.

The perfect Blu-ray release for the Schumann Birthday Anniversary in 2010.

“Argerich, simply and assuredly, is one of the most magisterial talents in the history of piano playing." The Gramophone Magazine

“This sparkling concert in the Gewandhaus is… one of the more imaginative events that last year marked the 150th anniversary of Schumann's death. The Symphony… is…proof of the rapport that Chailly has established as the orchestra's music director. The icing on the cake is the great Martha Argerich in one of her signature pieces. Throughout, her dialogue with the orchestra truly reflects the piano's role as first among equals. Not to be missed...” Gramophone Magazine, July 2007

“There's more virtuoso vision in Martha Argerich's Schumann… the performance glows with muscular certainty and fervour (Chailly's contribution no less inspirational).” BBC Music Magazine, March 2008 ****

“Riccardo Chailly seems wildly demonstrative by comparison. Every melodic twist and harmonic turn in this programme is reflected in his face. It's fun to watch - and, more importantly, it appears to work wonders. The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra respond with an ideal blend of tonal warmth and textural clarity.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2008

Liszt:

Funérailles (Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, S. 173 No. 7)

Ravel:

Jeux d'eau

Schumann:

Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54

CBC Symphony Orchestra, Franz-Paul Decker

Video Artists International takes great pride in the home video release of a very special concert by Martha Argerich, a legend among living pianists. In 1976, Miss Argerich was in the studios of the CBC Montreal network where she performed the Schumann Piano Concerto, Liszt’s Funérailles and Ravel’s Jeux d’eau.

The concerto receives a patrician performance with all the tonal beauty one would expect from this remarkable artist. The Ravel also benefits from her gorgeous tonal palette and evenness of touch. It is in the Liszt that one experiences the staggering virtuosity that is the other element of Argerich’s art. The left-hand octave passages in Funérailles are played with such awesome speed that the video cameras could barely capture the movement of the hand. As exhilarating to watch as to hear, Argerich on television is a major addition to the recorded work of one of the foremost talents of our day.

“admirers will find much to interest them...It’s notable for the richness of Celibidache’s verbal pointers...the longish Strauss rehearsal will merit a place on your shelf. It is an interesting character study - of control, relaxation, terseness and more floridly encouraging praise. Psychologically it’s a rewarding half an hour plus - and the performance shows the translation of those ideas and ideals in fine fashion.” MusicWeb International, November 2012
