| | | Messiaen - The Montaigne Recordings
This 6 CD set is being released to mark the centenary of the birth of the great 20th century French composer Olivier Messiaen. The music on these discs was originally recorded between 1988 and 1991 and released on the label “Montaigne”. The selection of works included feature major works that cover the most significant period in Messiaen’s life as a composer. The earliest of these is the “Visions de L’Amen” for two pianos which was written in 1943, whilst the most recent, “Un Vitrail et des Oiseaux” for piano and small orchestra comes from the year 1986.
Throughout his life Messiaen maintained a strong devotion to Catholicism, and many of his works like “Visions de L’Amen”, “ La Transfiguration de Notre Seigneur, Jesus Christ”, a large scale piece for choir and orchestra that was written in the late 1960’s, and the 1963 composition for piano and ensemble “Couleurs de la Cité Celeste” are representations of his unwavering faith in Christianity. Messiaen was also an avid birdwatcher and recorded and catalogued their songs which he transcribed and used to marvellous effect in several of his compositions, including the aptly named “Oiseaux Exotique” of 1956, which alongside the later “Un Vitrail et des Oiseaux” is similarly written for piano and chamber ensemble. The “Sept Ha?ka?” was written in 1962 and is subtitled “japanese sketches for piano and small orchestra”. It is the composer’s musical response to the landscape and birds of Japan, as well as the order and ceremony that defines that country’s culture. The final work in this set is the massive “Des Canyons aux Etoiles”, for solo piano, horn, xylorimba, glockenspiel and orchestra. Written in 1974, it is a monumental cycle of meditations on the majesty of God in all his creation, and was inspired by a visit that the composer made to the great canyons of Utah in the U.S.A. Artists featured in the recordings include renowned Messiaen interpreters, Pierre Boulez, Yvonne Loriod, the Schoenberg Ensemble, and Reinbert de Leeuw. “…a marvellous six disc box from Naïve that handily gathers previously issued live performances. …my admiration for de Leeuw's La Transfiguration, which is full of insight and some glorious singing, has grown over the years. The icing on the cake, though, is Messiaen's 80th birthday concert in Paris, with Yvonne Loriod the indefatigable soloist no less than four works... it is the crushing performance of Oiseaux exotiques that, quite rightly, brings the house down.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2008 ***** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Messiaen - Les Premiers Enregistrements 1956-1963
Yvonne Loriod (piano) and also features Olivier Messiaen, Pierre Boulez & Maurice Le Roux This set of ‘world premiere recordings’, released in the Century year of Messiaen’s birth, is unquestionably the definitive tribute to the talent of Yvonne Loriod. It was for Messiaen’s former student, who became his second wife in 1961, that he composed his great cycles and important piano works. Messiaen once said “I knew they would be played by Yvonne Loriod, I knew I could dream up very difficult things, things quite extraordinary and very new. They would be played and played well” She gave the first performance in March 1945 of the Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant Jésus, and in April 1959 of the complete version of Catalogue d’oiseaux. “Of all the various releases marking Messiaen's centenary, this is one of the most valuable. The central four discs, featuring Yvonne Loriod's first recordings of the two cast cycles Vingt regards sur l'enfant-Jésus and Catalogue d'oiseaux will have devotees going faint with excitement. Loriod and Messiaen's 1962 version of Visions de l'amen... utterly exuberant... The stunning performance of Oiseaux exotiques, the premiere itself, is little short of miraculous...” BBC Music Magazine, November 2008 ***** “For those wanting to look deeper into Messiaen's evolution and history, the Accord set of early recordings featuring Messiaen, Loriod and contemporary acolytes is essential. Loriod's 1956 account of the Vingt regards has a thrilling atmosphere of discovery... Boulez's account of the insanely exactly Sept Haïkaï and a joyous performance of Oiseaux exotiques from Rudolf Albert, recorded at Domaine Musical events, enjoy a marvellous sense of time and place. Messiaen's own recording of the Quartet for the End of Time, featuring cellist Etienne Pasquier (with whom he was interred in Stalag VIII-A)... has a rooted emotional authenticity that never tries too heard to make its point.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2009 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

Olivier Messiaen, Yvonne Loriod, Marie-Claire Alain, Katia and Marielle Labeque Kent Nagano & Pierre Boulez includes a disc of Olivier Messiaen interviewed by Claude Samuel (in French), 1988 “A bumper bargain box of some of the greatest recordings-compulsive.” BBC Music Magazine, 1st October 2005 “…her playing is nothing short of magnificent – superb range of sonority, rock-sure rhythm, unfailing attention to polyphonic strands, thrilling attack and tender caress in equal measure. … Under her touch there seems to be no such thing as a worn-out harmony or an unmusical one.” Gramophone Magazine (on Yvonne Loriod's piano performances on these CDs) BBC Music Magazine
