L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Ernest Ansermet At the time of its release - 1960 - Ansermet's stereo recording of the Mussorgsky-Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition was demonstration worthy, and it still, today, retains its sense of space and impact. Much of the remainder of the program makes its first international appearance on CD, and the 'Dance of the Persian Slaves' (from Khovanshchina) and the little Gopak from Sorochintsy Fair will be especially sought after by collectors. The CD of Mussorgsky orchestrations is filled-out with a comparative rarity - Balakirev's haunting symphonic poem Tamara, a temptress who seduces and murders ill-fated travellers. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Witches' Brew
New Symphony Orchestra of London, Orchestra of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Sir Alexander Gibson Issued in the US under the title 'Witches' Brew', Alexander Gibson and the New Symphony Orchestra of London recorded this album in 1959 and the performances remain today as characterful and incisive as they were then. While pieces from this recording have previously appeared on Decca, this is its first complete release on the label. Given that the music is a kind of Halloween concoction, it is now filled out on this reissue for CD with two supernatural pieces by Gounod - his Funeral March of a Marionette and the sparkling Ballet Music for Faust, both recorded in 1964 and which have come up sizzlingly well on CD. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibiton & Night on The Bare Mountain
Russian National Orchestra, Carlo Ponti Jr These well known pieces are presented in superb SACD sound. Carlo Ponti Jr. is the son of Carlo Ponti Sr. and Sophia Loren and is a regular conductor of the Russian National Orchestra. “Carlo Ponti…brings out the Russian-ness of Mussorgsky's inspiration with each of the pictures sharply characterised… The wind solos are specially impressive, as is the horn descant in the "Great Gate of Kiev". In short, an excellent version of a much-recorded showpiece. Night on the Bare Mountain comes in the highly unauthentic but undeniably effective Rimsky version, brilliantly played here with powerful bite.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2009 |

| | | Mussorgsky - Pictures At An Exhibition (SACD)
Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Paavo Järvi Paavo Järvi continues his series of Russian recordings with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra with a disc entirely devoted to works by Mussorgsky. Pictures at an Exhibition, originally composed for piano, is heard here in the orchestration by Ravel. Mussorgsy wrote pictures as a tribute to his friend, artist and architect Viktor Hartmann. The familiar Promenade theme links Mussorgsky’s imaginary tour of Hartmann’s exhibition. Rimsky-Korsakov, who felt that Night on Bald Mountain had many marvellous effects, tried to resurrect it after his friend died. He smoothed out many of the irregularities and improved the orchestration, most likely working from the final version of the piece. The Prelude to Mussorgsky’s ill-fated opera Khovanschchina is titled Dawn on the Moskva River. Mussorgsky composed much of the music for the first four acts, but orchestrated only a small amount of it. The task of orchestrating and completing the opera fell to his friend Rimsky-Korsakov. The Prelude sets the scene for Act I in the Red Square in Moscow, and uses a theme of distinctly Russian folk character, which undergoes a series of melodic variations. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | Dohnanyi conducts Mussorgsky
The Cleveland Orchestra, Christoph von Dohnanyi “…one immediately notices the hall Sonority with the opening brass… The ''Catacombes''sequence brings a sumptuousness matched by the closing ''Great Gate of Kiev'… very fine orchestral playing.” Gramophone Magazine | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

Both here and in some of the Pictures stopped horns and trumpets strike home as never before; nor have I ever noticed the contrabassoon so prominent on the bottom line of the 'Gnomus' juggernaut.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2008 **** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition
National Youth Orchestra of Spain & Joven Orquesta Nacional de España (JONDE), José Serebrier Filmed in Chester Cathedral during the National Youth Orchestra of Spain’s 2007 European tour, this concert features Leopold Stokowski’s inimitable and colourful transcriptions of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and A Night on Bare Mountain, the latter made famous by its inclusion in the 1940 Walt Disney film Fantasia. “José Serebrier has already recorded the two main works here in CD format, but it's interesting to check the extra sense of edger and immediacy given by this live concert in Chester Cathedral and, in the case of the Musorgsky Pictures, to watch first-hand what Stokowski is doing with the instrumentation.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2009 **** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
