Jan Depreter (guitar)

Joaquin Turina is one of Spain’s foremost romantic composers, receiving his rightful stature next to the giants Albeniz and Granados.

Turina left a small but important oeuvre of works written for solo guitar, which is issued on this new recording. Scenic, highly atmospheric and imbued with the smells and sounds of his native Spain: a treat for the guitar aficionado and lover of romantic music!

Excellent performance by the leading guitarist of Belgium, Jan Depreter, winner of many international guitar competitions and founder and artistic leader of the prestigious Antwerp Guitar Festival.

Christoph Denoth (guitar)

In his second CD for Signum Classics Swiss Guitarist Christoph Denoth explores musical 'homages' for the classical guitar:

"Homages and dedications have often a veiled mystique: the relationship between the composer and somebody else; a story and emotional experience hidden in the music. Homages are created from the heart, and reach out and engage the heart of the listener. To whom they are dedicated is not always easy to fathom, but they can speak and bloom as though they were only written for oneself, creating a poetry and beauty which fills our heart." Christoph Denoth

“The programming of this recital strikes me as well conceived and the playing is thoughtful.” MusicWeb International, 28th January 2015

Just How Funky Are You

Rovshan Mamedkuliev (Winner, 2012 Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) Competition)

Rovshan Mamedkuliev was first prize-winner at the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America Competition in 2012, and now stands as one of the world’s most exciting young instrumentalists. He has constructed a programme with several themes. Iberian music is represented by Falla, Albéniz and Turina, and by two of the titans of guitar playing, Miguel Llobet and Francisco Tárrega. He also includes music by his Azerbaijani compatriot, Fikret Amirov, whose folkloric-influenced music is another thematic link. The kaleidoscopic Just How Funky Are You by Andrew York and Leo Brouwer’s An Idea explore the guitar’s contemporary vitality. This recital disc demonstrates a number of facets at Mahmedkuliev’s disposal. He celebrates the Spanish lineage of the instrument with some canonic pieces, but also appeals more widely via contemporary music and by promoting the music of his compatriot. This disc will appeal both to admirers of this exciting new guitarist and to his repertoire choices.

Pepe Romero (guitar)

The guitar legend Pepe Romero is back with his first solo album for Deutsche Grammophon.

With “Spanish Nights” he presents a highly personal musical recreation of the Spain he knew in his youth: often dark, introspective and melancholy but also powerful and affirmative. The artist recalls: “Dreams of freedom and peace were expressed through the arts. Among my family’s close circle were great musicians, poets, painters and composers. When we moved to the US, we continued living in an idealized Spain.”

Celebrated worldwide for his interpretations and technique, guitarist Pepe Romero is in constant demand for solo recitals and appearances with orchestra.

The album features a world premiere recording, Suite Madrileña No.1, written by Celedonion Romero, Pepe’s father and founder of “Los Romeros”. 2013 marks Celedonio’s centenary, who was born on 2 March.

His Philips recording of RODRIGO: Concierto de Aranjuez; Fantasía para un Gentilhombre has sold over 300,000 units worldwide.

“while Pepe Romero is only in his late sixties, this is 'late style' playing, the tempi uniformly slower than one would normally hear, the tendency to focus on sheer beauty of tone more pronounced...Not that there isn't fire: Romero is also a fine flamenco guitarist and there's plenty of passion in Turina's flamenco-inspired Sevillana.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2012

“it's not so much the variety of tone but the spacious phrasing that immediately brings Segovia to mind...what really clinches the deal for me here is Catemario's msucular, vividly orchestrated Fandanguillo and Sevillana by Turina, by turns rustic and refined, intimate and panoramic. You can almost taste the olives” Gramophone Magazine, August 2014
