Steve Reich and Musicians 'Drumming' is a classic of hope and achievement. Coming after a few years – the late sixties – when so many old barriers had fallen, it rejoices in a world where modern and ancient, western and non-western are no longer separate categories “My visit to Africa in 1970 confirmed my intuition that acoustic instruments and voices could be used to produce music that was genuinely richer in sound than that produced by electronic instruments, as well as confirming my natural inclination towards percussion.” STEVE REICH “What we hear is a busy, continuous texture which displays a kind of musical moire effect, as tiny alterations in the parts keep inviting the ear to discern new patterns, almost subliminally. It may, in short, be the kind of thing that drives you crazy.” Gramophone Magazine, 1975 | | | (Sorry, download not available in your country) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Synergy Vocals, Ictus, Georges-Elie Octors Exploring his "gradual process" in the early 70's, Reich gives with Drumming one of his most fascinating works. While his composition process is already full of microscopic "abnormal" details which give much pleasure to the listener, it keeps also its allure of a radical minimalistic challenge. Drumming is constructed around one single basic rhythmic-melodic pattern, for an imposing ensemble of percussion (bongos, marimbas, glockenspiel) joined by some female voices, a piccolo flute or a whistling part. The breathtaking feeling of simplicity/complexity in this work is transmitted with an amazing skill by the interpreters. Ictus made this recording with the excellent Synergy Vocals ensemble, concluding a long series of triumphant live performances in Europe and United States: Drumming became indeed a dance spectacle initiated by Rosas, the troup of Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, who signed the choreography. “ Drumming is from 1971, but it has lost none of its strength. The players of Ictus here put their hearts and souls into a work that demands ferocious concentration (though other approaches are possible – a composer friend once said that it was quite the best music for building bookcases), and which rewards accordingly. Now, we know that nobody likes the label 'minimalist' any more, but with music of this quality it's very hard to find that description insulting. This performance is quite the equal of, and possibly more colourful than, Reich's second version, on Nonesuch, and clearly outstrips the original, less trim DG version.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Phases - Steve ReichA Nonesuch Retrospective - celebrating the work and life of composer Steve Reich
'Phases' opens with what is arguably Reich's signature work, 'Music For Eighteen Musicians', performed by Reich and his longtime ensemble. However, each piece here, culled from Reich's Nonesuch discography, warrants a significant spot in any overview of his career, from the semi-autobiographical, often deeply moving 'Different Trains', played by Kronos Quartet, to the rhythmically and spiritually adventurous 'You Are (Variations)', written for, and performed by the Los Angeles Master Chorale. “I never thought I’d look forward to turning 70,” says Steve Reich. “To say I’m honoured is definitely an understatement.” “…Phases is now the best option for anyone looking to acquire an instant Steve Reich back catalogue collection. …covering all the significant areas of Reich's career in a well-proportioned, musically intelligent way.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2006 **** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
