Following their acclaimed recordings of Dvořák’s Symphonies Nos. 7 and 8, Claus Peter Flor and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra come to his Symphony No.9 ‘From the New World’. Since its première, Symphony No. 9 has remained one of his most popular works. It was composed in America and, in the words of the composer, uses ‘simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music’, developing them ‘with all the resources of modern rhythms, harmony, counterpoint and orchestral colour.’ Dvořák performed the overture Můj domov (My Home) at the Czech première of the Ninth. Part of the incidental music for a play, the overture is based on two popular songs, one of which, Kde domov můj (Where Is My Home), would later become the Czechoslovakian national anthem. Another of Dvořák’s ‘nationalistic’ works appears here – the light-hearted Czech Suite, consisting of five movements, all based on the dance rhythms of Bohemia, Moravia and Central Europe. “the performance as a whole displays such unfailing purpose, sensitivity and freshness of new discovery that I felt I was encountering the music for the first time...The SACD sound throughout is superb, gloriously ripe, most judiciously balanced...I derived enormous pleasure from this release and feel sure you will too.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2013 “this will be one for collectors of the series, and I can guarantee it doesn’t disappoint on any level...I love the orchestra’s clean sound and rich resonance, the strings are silky smooth, winds musical and tastefully stylish in terms of vibrato, the brass superbly tuned and powerful where power is demanded.” MusicWeb International, April 2013 |

| | | Dvorak: Symphony No. 9
The start of the first complete cycle of Dvorák symphonies on Warner Classics. It follows the enormously successful complete Glazunov symphonies cycle from José Serebrier with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and complete Glazunov concertos with the Russian National Orchestra. José Serebrier has a special affinity with Slavic music including an outstanding live performance of Rachmaninov The Bells, as well as the complete symphonies and concertos of Glazunov. Recorded at the Lighthouse, Poole, 22 & 23 June 2011 by producer & Grammy-nominated engineer, Phil Rowlands “However often the Bournemouth Symphony, like every other orchestra, must have played the 'New World', there's no sense of routine in their response here: in the slow movement especially, their classy woodwind section delivers some beautifully poised moments. Serebrier's conducting, however, while free from point-making for point-making's sake, is on the earthbound side.” Classic FM Magazine, February 2012 *** “the high point of the performance is the finale, which Serebrier gauges virtually to perfection, tracing every episode with the utmost care and yet always relating it to a wider musical context.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

”This is a recording that does more than give pleasure in its own right (although it does that in spades).” * * * * Classic FM Magazine “…it is unusual to encounter a performance of the Dvořák Concerto in which the soloist takes on the extra responsibility of directing the orchestra. Fiery and intense in the opening movement, Swensen produces a particularly magical sound in the gorgeous lyrical melodies of the slow movement. ...the haunting Nocturne which is given a very atmospheric performance.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2006 **** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
