“Robert King's rationale for using boy trebles and altos here is theoretically convincing, but both choruses and arias have some awkward or strained moments. Otherwise a good performance.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2005 *** “Robert King's vigorous and alert reading has extra freshness...The individual finesse of the boy singers is impressively demonstrated in the solos. This is a reading which consistently brings out the joy of Bach's inspiration, not least in the great celestial outbursts of the Sanctus.” Penguin Guide, 2010 *** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

“Gardiner bases his forces on the famous memorandum which Bach handed to the Leipzig town council in 1730 outlining the vocal and instrumental requirements for performances of his church music. This results in a larger ripieno group. Gardiner also includes a harpsichord as well as an organ, the simultaneous playing of which, in Wolff's words, was 'a practice that can probably be assumed to be normative in the great majority of Bach's church music'. Gardiner uses women's voices for the soprano solo and ripieno lines and also a male alto soloist and male alto ripieno singers. This is a fine achievement. Here the many strong points of his direction – a vital rhythmic understanding, a clear and positive sense of purpose, and a naturally affective response to Bach's music, combine in forming a concept of the work which not only explores its eneffable mysteries but also savours the magnificence of its architecture. The solo vocal line-up is a strong one and there are few weak moments; most of the soloists sing in the ripieno group as well, though Patrizia Kwella and Lynne Dawson appear to be exceptions to the rule. Nancy Argenta's 'Laudamus te', in which she is lightly partnered by Elizabeth Wilcock's sensitive violin playing is very fine and the singing of Mary Nichols who provides an expressive and wellbalanced partnership with Patrizia Kwella in the 'Et in unum Dominum' deserves special mention. Michael Chance gives a beautifully controlled account of the 'Agnus Dei' and there are assured contributions elsewhere from Wynford Evans and Stephen Varcoe. The crowning achievement of Gardiner's recording lies in the vitality, accuracy and homogeneity of the ripieno singing it is in no sense intended to underplay the considerable virtues of the soloists and the orchestra; but this, after all, is first a vocal work and foremost a choral one. The ripieno singing at its very best – as it is for example, in the 'Et resurrexit' – is thrilling and gives a fervent imprint to the entire work. There is a spontaneity about this singing to which few listeners could remain indifferent. Gardiner's choruses are immediately striking and handled with such skill and rigorous discipline that repeated hearing in no sense diminishes their impact.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “Gardiner masterfully conveys the majesty (with bells and censer-swinging evoked) simultaneously with a crisply resilient rhythmic pulse. The choral tone is luminous and powerfully projected. The recording is warmly atmospheric but not cloudy.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition *** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Ute Selbig (Soprano I), Susanne Krumbiegel (Soprano II), Elisabeth Wilke (Alto), Martin Petzold (Tenor) & Gotthold Schwarz (Bass) Thomanerchor Leipzig (St Thomas’s Boys Choir Leipzig) & Leipziger Barockorchester (Leipzig Baroque Orchestra), Thomaskantor Georg Christoph Biller (Thomas Cantor) The Leipziger Volkszeitung heralded the performance of the B minor Mass given by Thomanerchor Leipzig (St Thomas’s Boys Choir) at the closing concert of the Bachfest 2006 in St Thomas as ‘a new, sounding benchmark – for Bach in and from Leipzig’. The boys were on equally ‘breath-taking form’ when they recorded their highly acclaimed interpretation on CD in the same year. This high-end CD edition includes a comprehensive booklet with extensive notes on the work and its performers. St Thomas’s Boys Choir (St Thomas’s Boys Choir) is accompanied by the Leipziger Barockorchester and the renowned soloists Ute Selbig, Susanne Krumbiegel, Elisabeth Wilke, Martin Petzold, and Gotthold Schwarz. In short, a magnificent recording of the B minor Mass, which is frequently apostrophised as Bach’s ‘opus summum’: the work in which the great cantor of St Thomas takes stock of his artistic lifetime achievement. |

Dedicated to one of the composer's most popular works, this release celebrates J.S. Bach's Mass in B Minor -- a masterpiece of writing that ranks among the greatest liturgical settings in the history of music. The composition was born out of the 'Kyrie' and 'Gloria' movements that Bach had originally dedicated to the Elector of Saxony (in the hope of securing an official title at his court). After his eventual move to Dresden, the composer decided to combine these with further, separately composed movements taken from the Ordinary -- namely a setting of the 'Symbolum Nicenum', a Sanctus from 1724 and parodies from earlier pieces that were rearranged as the 'Osanna', 'Benedictus', 'Agnus Dei' and 'Dona nobis pacem'. From the use of opera techniques, as seen in the varied sequence of choruses and arias, to highly varied instrumentation and styles -- including the French overture arrangement of the Sanctus -- Bach created a monumental work that is rich in both polyphony and virtuosic display. It was a deliberately structured composition, one that differed to his usual practise of writing for an imminent performance and which is far too long for proper liturgical use. Bach probably never got to hear the great Mass performed in its entirety, but numerous copies of the work dating from the 19th century point to its renaissance more than a century later. Featuring assured solo performances, strong chorus singing as well as meticulous playing by the Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca, this release comprises a worthy addition to the Brilliant Classics' choral library. Other information: -The importance of the Bach's B minor Mass is difficult to overestimate: some consider it the greatest, deepest, and most influential classical work of all history, certainly it is the most quintessential work of Bach, a summing up of his creative, human and religious powers, and a source of inspiration, solace and faith of humans of all ages, and ages to come. - This famous recording, licensed from the Swiss label Arts, is based on the Historically Informed Performance Practice, and presents the best voices in this field: the celebrated Roberta Invernizzi, Lynn Dawson, Gloria Banditelli and the famous German tenor Christoph Prégardien. The Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca conducted by Diego Fasolis let their Mediterranean sun shine on this Catholic liturgical Mass by Nordic protestant Johann Sebastian Bach: an experience of universal power and beauty. - Comprehensive booklet notes in German, with English translation. - Complete sung texts and English translation available on www.brilliantclassics.com. “A compelling line-up of soloists is the chief draw in a scrupulously-crafted, neatly-executed concert performance comporomised by the reverberant acoustic” BBC Music Magazine, December 2012 *** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

With this recording, Herbert Blomstedt pays homage to Bach and the city of Leipzig. One part of the Blu-ray Disc was recorded in 2005 at the Leipzig Bach Festival, which is widely regarded as the world’s leading festival celebrating Johann Sebastian Bach. This concert of Bach’s masterwork, written at the end of his tenure as the 18th Gewandhauskapellmeister did not really mark the end of Blomstedt’s fruitful collaboration with the traditional orchestra. The Swedish conductor will continue to act as an honorary musical director to the ensemble. Performed with leading Bach singers at St. Thomas’ Church, Leipzig, the church for which Bach conceived his works, this homage to Bach was a touching farewell to Herbert Blomstedt from his Leipzig audience. J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor is one of the greatest and most famous works of sacred music. The other part of the Blu-ray Disc was recorded at the 9th October Memorial Concert of the Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Thomanerchores. These began with the "Monday demonstration" of 9 October 1989, just one month before the fall of the Berlin wall. Bonus: Bach and his B minor Mass – An introduction by Herbert Blomstedt.
