Strauss, J, II:

Perpetuum Mobile, Op. 257

BBC Philharmonic, H K Gruber (conductor/chansonnier)

“Gruber himself takes on the rôle of chansonnier with lip-smacking relish. Artmann's witty poems about Dracula, Superman, James Bond, Frankenstein et al are actually performed in English, but sometimes it’s hard to tell, as Gruber rolls his r's extravagantly and has a Viennese accent you could cut with a knife. The BBC Philharmonic pays Gruber's jazz-cum-Sachertorte music with remarkable delicacy... a CD of sumptuous orchestral and compositional virtuosity.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2007 ****

“a virtually uncategorizable work, a zanily bedazzling collage of different influences and styles, ranging all the way from bar-room cabaret to operatic declamation … great fun” Classic CD

Rough Music, concerto for percussion and orchestra

Charivari

Strauss, J, II:

Perpetuum Mobile, Op. 257

Martin Grubinger (percussion) & HK Gruber (chansonnier)

Tonkünstler Orchestra, Kristjan Järvi

It has been said about HK Gruber that "throws off labels as fast as pundits can affix them. Neo-romantic, neo-tonal, neo-expressionistic, neo-Viennese: he isn’t any of these things, so much as a sentient composer who keeps responding to whatever musical stimulus, be it highbrow or lowbrow, 12-tone or 7-tone, bitter or sweet, that comes his way."

“Gruber performs the Artmann settings himself, in a fruitily rhetorical way that evokes the Viennese cabaret of the pre-war era… Martin Grubinger's performance of the percussion concerto is just as vividly characterised.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2007 ****

"...direct performances that are an unaffected joy." (Gramophone)

“Most of us have got used to period instruments playing Beethoven but 'early music' groups tackling later repertoire still raise eyebrows.
Similarly, the suggestion that there is a good composer named Strauss whose first name is not Richard usually invokes derision.
Both of these sniffy attitudes are bravely challenged by Jos van Immerseel, who penitently writes that 'like many musicians I found Strauss's music a bit cheap. This wasn't the case when I began studying music as a 10-year-old and sightread Strauss waltzes… I liked the music, but the pleasure was short-lived. In the music school where I next studied, it was forbidden to play music by Strauss (or to enjoy anything); Bach and Czerny replaced Strauss on the music desk.
The prejudice against Strauss's “unworthy” music made it impossible for me to appreciate even his orchestral scores.' Aided by a new critical edition published by Bärenreiter, Immerseel's vibrant and ostentatious revisionist approach allows no wilting pretentiousness, but instead the superb Anima Eterna use their period instruments to deliver full-on, gutsy, direct performances that are an unaffected joy.”
