Handel wrote the solo sonatas of Opus 1 for the professional musicians of his London opera orchestra. They demand considerable skill and stamina both from the soloist and the continuo. Prominent bass parts give the sonatas a contrapuntal strength and vitality, and Handel keeps the elements of display and purely musical argument in admirable balance in these works. For this reason, they are among the most attractive Baroque solo sonatas and deserve their lasting popularity. Played here by members of the Academy of Ancient Music under the leadership of Richard Egarr, Handel's delightful sonatas are shown to be true masterpieces written by a composer at the height of his powers. “Minus bowed bass, Egarr's harpsichord accompaniment is free and expressive. The soloists slide easily from austerity to opulence, and Brown's dewy-toned recorder is enchanting.” The Independent on Sunday, 7th June 2009 “The soloists here are stylish and imaginative. Decorations are a delight in slow movements; the Adagio from No. 8 (oboe) is positively dripping with them. The playing is highly expressive… Highly commended as both the complete Op. 1 package and as deeply satisfying performances.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2009 ***** “…the playing of the three principles of the Academy of Ancient Music sparkles, charms and soothes.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2009 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Handel - Neun deutsche Arien
“…Handel's Nine German Arias are devotional music at its most beguiling and hedonistic. With her pure, luminous tone, graceful sense of phrase and discerning musicality, Carolyn Sampson gives enchanting performances of music that is essentially about enchantment.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2007 “Carolyn Sampson sings with effortless ease, the reward for superb vocal technique. She generates a lovely warmth in tone to colour individual syllables while retaining a gloriously flowing musical line. No less a delight… are three oboe sonatas. Alexandra Bellamy plays them with alluring simplicity. Her tone is something quite special, supple and warm, and fluent when fast movements demand it - a real find.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2007 **** “as fresh as it is tonally beautiful” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Baroque Chamber Music for Piccolo Trumpet
plus: Vivaldi: Concerto in G minor J.C. Bach: Sonata in E flat major
Joachim Schäfer (trumpet) Whole generations of composers saw a special challenge in writing for the solo trumpet. At the same time, they often had trumpeters at their disposal who were virtually legends of virtuosity, such as Johann Gottfried Reiche, whom Bach was able to call upon in Leipzig. The Baroque trumpet thus contributed a great deal to the development of the concerto style - not least in the musical centres of Europe. There, its splendid effects also brought glory to the instrument in operatic and incidental music for the stage. The brilliantly virtuosic tonal potential of the instrument - played in its valveless, 'natural' form during its heyday - has always exercised a special fascination. Its aesthetic appeal may still be comprehended today; what is more, this apparently eternally young and refreshing world of sonare (sonata: sounding piece) and concertare (concerto: contrasting solo part) has now awoken a great and unceasing demand for new arrangements for the trumpet. The present recording has resulted out of a feeling of obligation to meet this challenge. Here the spirits of rediscovery and revival combine. | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |
