Hyperion’s Record of the Month for July sees Angela Hewitt rounding off her acclaimed series of solo Bach recordings with this delightful miscellany. A range of genres are represented – fantasia and fugues, chorale preludes, suites, a sonata, a set of variations – from different periods of Bach’s life, and displaying a wide variety of form, style, influence and scope. This is music that has been neglected largely because it doesn’t sit within the famous Bach canons rather than because of its intrinsic quality. Angela Hewitt brings her customary style and elegance to these works, and her vivid, joyous music-making creates a fitting conclusion to this benchmark modern survey of Bach’s keyboard works “As Angela Hewitt's Hyperion Bach cycle concludes, her ability to voice and control the composer's counterpoint reaches sharper, more finely calibrated proportions than ever. Her astonishing dispatch of the rapid repeated notes in the finale of the D major Sonata, her bouncy, characterful articulation in the BWV 832 Suite in A, and the feathery fingerwork in the BWV 944 Fugue take great Bach playing and great pianism to joyous heights...” BBC Music Magazine, September 2004 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Walter-Heinz Bernstein (pianoforte), Maria Bräutigam (Italian Harpsichord), Winfried Schrammek (clavichord) & Armin Thalheim (harpsichord) The former German Democratic Republic took its role as guardian of the important German cultural traditions, especially in music, very seriously, and this can clearly be seen not only in the magnificent archives of music from central Germany and the court of Frederick the Great, but also in collections of early instruments. This 2-CD set features music performed on keyboards produced by some of the greatest instrument makers of their time, including Gottfried Silbermann, Heinrich Harrass and Johann Jacob Donat. Stradivarius' 1991 studio and live digital recordings of Sviatoslav Richter are now brought together for a new definitive mid-price luxurious digipak box. Sviatoslav Richter is widely regarded as one of the finest pianists of the 20th century. With a career that began in Soviet Russia in the 1930s, listeners in the West had their first opportunity to hear him through recordings made in the 1950s, and his reputation among classical fans grew quickly. Richter's approach to music is best illustrated by the enormous range of his repertoire. In recital and on recordings he played everything from Bach to Stravinsky to George Gershwin as well as championing unknown or unpopular works he thought deserved the public's attention. Richter's performances of Bach are rare and exquisite jewels indeed. He possessed exactly the right degree of intellectual command and technical control to liberate the ghost from the machine and the results are never less than satisfying. The playing is patrician and often miraculous, but the visceral element of showmanship, is almost entirely absent. Instead, there is a tangible sense of communion that seems particularly appropriate for Bach. Richter does not make the mistake of attempting to turn his concert grand into a harpsichord, instead he subtlety uses all the resources at his disposal to delineate and clarify the texture. The possession of one of the most glorious sounds in pianistic history certainly helps too. “…in the live performances… galvanised by the audience, his playing becomes fully energised. The D minor Toccata and English Suite in particular demonstrate his fearless force and musicianship.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2009 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

In 1994, pianist Ivo Janssen started a very ambitious project: performing and recording the complete keyboard works by J S Bach. In February 1998 the first CD in this series was released, on his own label VOID, which was especially started for this purpose. This set is the only complete keyboard set containing previously cut passages and includes 191 BWV numbers and over 23 hours of music. “Janssen has admirable skills for the task: a pianist’s sensibility, an unflagging imagination and compelling musicianship.” American Record Guide. “there’s a sense of fly-by-night impetuosity about some of these performances, all taped in the same venue with the same producer...Janssen seems comparatively straight after Glenn Gould, but he’s much easier to live with in the long term...Janssen’s warmth and affection is impressive; this is humane, witty playing.” The Arts Desk, 26th November 2011 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
