Dvořák’s was a strong voice in the re-establishment of Czech musical identity, and the noble themes, open landscapes and dancing Scherzo of the Symphony No. 6 bear the stamp of a genius at his height. The work can also be heard as a tribute to Brahms, who had helped him earlier in his career. Janáček’s charming Idyll reflects his preoccupation with Moravian folk-songs and rhythms as well as the influence of his friend Dvořák, identified by Jaroslav Vogel as the work’s “spiritual godfather”. “This is a very clever coupling of works...Dvorak's Symphony has a pervasive lightness of spirit...Schwarz captures these aspects of the work superbly in the first two movements, but the Scherzo lacks adequate rhythmic kick...The Seattle orchestra's performance of Janacek's Idyll is in another league...The Seattle Symphony strings distinguish themselves and Schwarz has a clear sympathy with this attractive music.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2013 *** “Schwarz usefully separates his violin desks, which pays generous dividends in the finale...[the Janacek Idyll is] an effective showcase for the Seattle strings, who distinguish themselves with a degree of lustre and expressive sweetness that matches the best rival American orchestras.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2013 |

“…the performance of the Water Goblin is rewarding. Clearly, Kreizberg has a way with Dvorák, but he seems to have lost it in the Sixth.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2008 **** “Kreizberg here demonstrates what a fine orchestra the Netherlands Philharmonic is, even rivalling the Royal Concertgebouw in the refinement and precision of the playing……Kreizberg’s approach is generaly to adopt a
steady speed and to allow warmly expressive phrasing within that tempo. Another outstanding disc from the enterprising PentaTone company.” Edward Greenfield, Gramophone Magazine, October 2008 “Kreizberg here demonstrates what a fine orchestra the Netherlands Philharmonic is, even rivalling the Royal Concertgebouw in the refinement and precision of the playing. Symphony No 6 in D major in many ways reflects Dvorák's admiration for Brahm's Second Symphony... Yet Kreizberg's reading consistently brings out the fact that not a bar could have been written by any other composer but Dvorák.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2008 “Kreizberg's reading consistently brings out the fact that not a bar could have been written by any other composer but Dvorak.” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition *** | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

“Colin Davis's… reading of the first movement is marvellously infectious: the slight rasp added to the opening rhythmic figure and the waltz-like treatment of the lyrical moments are wholly convincing. There is a wealth of ravishing detail in the slow movement and the finale is magnificently structured.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2005 **** “A performance of great clarity and details which also connect with the earthier qualities of Dvořák's most rhythmically exciting symphony.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2005 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

“Belohlávek has referred to his Czech orchestra's 'singing art of playing' and its 'mellow sound' and indeed it's Bohemia's woods, fields and wildlife, rather than energetic village green festivities, that linger in the memory here. Perhaps you shouldn't expect a Czech Philharmonic performance to 'go' or leap about excitedly in the manner of Kertész's with the LSO; in these days of high adrenalin, high contrast and high definition, there's a lot to be said for a less assertive and vigorous approach, always artlessly sung, and for this orchestra's Old World tim- bres a Brahmsian fireside glow, for example, to the Symphony's first movement second subject on cellos and horns (beautifully eased in by Belohlávek). These horns, always more rounded in tone than their rasping counterparts in London (Kertész), bear an obvious family resemblance to the woodwind, not only in timbre, but also in the use of vibrato (again, that 'singing art of playing'). And the 'silver moon' flute is one of this disc's principal joys. Belohlávek also projects the drama of The wild dove with relish. Chandos guarantees a sepia-toned warmth throughout.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “Belohlavek conducts a glowing performance of No. 6, rich in Brahmsian and Czech pastoral overtones, helped by satisfyingly full and immediate Chandos sound.” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition *** | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Dvorak: Symphonies Nos. 3 & 6
Third volume in the critically acclaimed Serebrier / Bournemouth Dvorak cycle. “In particular, Serebrier's balance of the varying instrumental tapestries is well-nigh ideal: it is impossible to imagine a finer account of the work than this...the conductor's insight as a composer brings rich rewards. The recording quality is simply flawless” International Record Review, December 2012 “Right from the opening bars, the Third Symphony enjoys a warm blend of instrumental sonorities...what a rich trove of loveable ideas this symphony is and anyone learning the work from this recording will certainly enjoy its sunniest side. A good CD, the Sixth possibly the best performance so far in Serebrier's evolving Dvorak symphony cycle.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2013 “Serebrier keeps the triple time rhythms buoyant and alert [in the first movement of No. 6], never letting the textures muddy. This is seriously lovely stuff...The orchestral playing is beyond reproach – limpid wind solos and plenty of warmth in the lower string sound...This is very, very impressive.” The Arts Desk, 19th January 2013 “Serebrier performs both works with affection, shaping phrases caressingly and negotiating the many tempos changes with aplomb, and he gets a ready response from the excellent Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 **** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | Dvorak: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 6
On this new five-channel Hybrid SACD, Zdenek Mácal conducts the legendary Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in Antonin Dvořák’s Symphonies Nos. 2 in B flat and 6 in D, the latter being the first of the composer’s mature works in the genre. Zdenek Mácal is considered to be one of the foremost interpreters of his compatriot’s music. During a highly successful career Zdenek Macal has conducted over 160 orchestras worldwide including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony, the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Chicago Symphony, as well as appearing at major opera houses throughout Europe. He has recorded several discs with the Czech Philharmonic for Exton, with recent releases including Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 1, Mahler's Symphony No. 3, and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 (Pathètique). Although Antonin Dvořák composed his Second Symphony in 1865, the work was not published until 1959 as part of the complete edition of his works. This recording uses a version that was performed in Prague in 1888 for which event the composer made many changes from the original manuscript. The Sixth Symphony dates from the years when the Dvořák’s reputation was spreading rapidly from his native Bohemia to the rest of Europe and beyond. It was written in just seven weeks between August and October 1880 in response to a request from the great conductor Hans Richter. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
