Tchaikovsky:

The Storm Overture (Groza), Op.76

NB: Whilst the track-listing on the product claims that this work is The Storm Overture, we have listened to the track whilst following a score and believe that it is in fact the Overture in C minor Op. 76 (which reworks themes from The Storm and begins in the same way).

Fatum, Op. 77

Hamlet - Fantasy overture, Op. 67

The Voyevoda: The Dances of the Hay Maidens

The Oprichnik: Dances of Oprichniks and Women

The State Academic Symphony Orchestra, Evgeny Svetlanov

This is a live recording of a concert given in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on 1990 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the composer. The CD includes some rarely performed compositions which are on CD for the first time. The works are brilliantly performed under the baton of Svetlanov.

“At his best, Svetlanov was well-nigh unbeatable in Russian repertoire and this superbly shaped and vibrantly dramatic version of Hamlet is a real highlight: there's an incendiary intensity to climaxes but such imaginative playing quieter moments too. The performances throughout this enterprising programme are at a comparable level of inspiration.” International Record Review, May 2011

Tchaikovsky:

Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36

Fatum, Op. 77

Capriccio italien, Op. 45

The Fourth Symphony was composed between May and December 1877, first performed in February 1878 and belongs to his ‘black’ cycle of compositions. The Capriccio Italien makes a good contrast therefore with its abundance of lively musical colours and flavours of Italy inspired by Tchaikovsky’s time there in 1879.
