Damien Guillon (countertenor & direction) Le Banquet Céleste Following an extremely promising first album devoted to Dowland, here is another chance to hear Damien Guillon, accompanied by his ensemble Le Banquet Céleste, in a programme of solo cantatas by J. S. Bach. A noted recitalist, Damien Guillon is also invited to appear under the direction of such leading conductors as Philippe Herreweghe, William Christie, Masaaki Suzuki, and Vincent Dumestre. “Guillon generally shines in the slower arias, where his sheer vocal beauty has an almost floating quality...Le Banquet Celeste plays with one instrument per part; it has a warm and rich timbre and, under Guillon's own direction, gives him masterful accompaniment.” International Record Review, September 2012 “Guillon reveals a Deller-esque intimacy in his approach and production, one of bell-like purity, sailing at the top with enticing honey notes in the lower reaches...Occasionally tempted to over-project and force his sound, Guillon is principally a sensitive chamber musician of a high order...A most gratifying new view of these super-refined creations.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2012 “Guillon explores every detail of the text and makes the most of the contrasts within a cantata, a recitative or an aria...[I] rate [his] performances of these cantatas among the very best on the market.” MusicWeb International, November 2013 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Volume 6 of Margaret Phillips’ on-going and critically-acclaimed cycle of the complete organ works of JS Bach Two CD set at ‘two-for-one’ price, each disc is a self-contained recital featuring major works, a trio sonata, a concerto and a selections of chorale preludes. The first disc features one of the worlds most iconic historic organs, built in 1738 by Christian Müller, in St Bavo’s church in Haarlem. The second disc features the large 2004 Bernard Aubertin organ in St Louis-en-l’Île, Paris. Built in eighteenthcentury German style this instrument is a similar size to the one in Haarlem and offers a fascinating comparison. Repertoire includes some of Bach’s largest works for organ, with the Prelude and Fugues in Eminor (‘Wedge’) and B minor at Haarlem and the Fantasia and Fugue in G minor at Paris. “This sumptuously illustrated sixth instalment of Margaret Phillips's complete Bach continues with clean, poised playing, devoid of artifice. The watchword here is clarity, whether in the intimacy of the chorale preludes or the heft of the monumental Toccata in E” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2011 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

The programme on this recording includes some of J.S. Bach's most famous organ works, as well as a number of chorale fantasias, including one discovered quite recently. The organ in the church of Leufsta Bruk (north of Uppsala) was built in 1726-28 by Johan Niclas Cahman, Sweden's foremost organ maker at the time. It is without comparison the most outstanding among the maintained baroque organs in Sweden. It has recently undergone a thorough restoration in order to bring it, as far as possible, back to its original state. Therefore, this CD demonstrates the sound and musical possibilities of the organ in all its former glory. Moreover, professor Fagius likes to show how congenially this instrument conveys J.S. Bach's matchless music. In addition to the commentary by professor Fagius, the booklet contains beautiful colour photos of the organ and also of the interior and surroundings of the church. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
