Felix Schwandtke (bass), Stefan Kunath (alto), Ulrike Hofbauer (soprano), Tobias Mathger (tenor), Ludger Remy (organ), Hille Perl (lute), Jan Kobow (tenor), Dirk Dobrig (bass), Claudius Pobbig (tenor), Felix Rumpf (bass) Sirius Viols, Dresden Chamber Choir, Hans-Christoph Rademann Carus presents three fascinating works for the Passiontide on Volume 6 of the Complete Recording of Heinrich Schütz. Heinrich Schütz expressed musically the central message of the Christian thinking in the work The Seven Words of Jesus on the cross SWV 178, so this mostly enigmatic work is similarly in a theological and musical way fascinating. The mostly unknown sacred concert for four violins and voice, Have mercy upon me, O God SWV 447 is a world premiere recording for the Good Friday service and represents a delightful addition to The Seven Words of Jesus. The St Lukas Passion SWV 480 unfolds a kind of panorama which invites the listener to an intensive and quiet viewing of the passion. Performed by the talented collaboration of the Dresden Chamber Choir under the direction of Hans Christoph Rademann, we can enjoy the music in its most sublime form. |

| | | Schütz: St Luke Passion, SWV 480
Johan Linderoth Jakob Bloch Jespersen & Ars Nova Copenhagen, Paul Hillier Ars Nova Copenhagen and Paul Hillier here present the first recording in a series devoted to the narrative works (Historia) of Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672). The Danish vocal ensemble thus celebrates Denmark’s proud connection with this German master who was appointed Kapellmeister to King Christian IV and worked at the Danish court for two periods over the course of eleven years. The cover illustrations show reliefs in beaten metal by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (1884-1976), a member of the Die Brücke group founded in 1905 in Dresden – a city with which Schütz himself was closely associated. ARS NOVA COPENHAGEN is widely recognized as one of the finest vocal ensembles in Europe. At the heart of Ars Nova Copenhagen’s work is its equal dedication to early music and new music. Lead by chief conductor since 2003, PAUL HILLIER, the ensemble has gained critical acclaim for numerous recordings. “The bass Jakob Bloch Jespersen is finely cast as Jesus, his voice and range sonorous and his pacing thoughtful and restrained. The 12-voice choir plays the role of disciples, high priests and crowds baying for blood… Their intonation is superb, creating a rich tone in a reverberant Copenhagen Church.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2009 **** “The 14 singers in this performance of Heinrich Schütz's St Luke Passion sing with superb diction, poise, intonation, blend and expressiveness.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2009 | | | (also available to download from $11.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. | | | Heinrich Schutz - Lukas-Passion & Die SiebenWorte
“Schütz’s historical achievement lay in moving German music from its peripheral position to one of central importance. He was praised by many contemporary musicians and theorists [for the] sensitive and complex manipulation and enrichment of the text that is one of the chief hallmarks of Schütz’s best music.” Grove Dictionary “A rare addition to Jürgens' CD-ography. Schütz's austere Passion works receive intense, expressive, gently dramatic performances. The largish choir is fresh and alert; soloists variable but committed.” BBC Music Magazine, Proms 2008 **** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
