Handel & Telemann: Water Musick / Wassermusik

Telemann:

Overture (Suite) TWV 55:C3 in C major for wind, strings & b.c. 'Hamburger Ebb und Fluth' ('Wassermusik')

Zefiro has already proved its strong affinity with Georg Philipp Telemann’s music, and the ensemble’s recording of his Ouvertures a 8 (Arcana A371) was awarded a Gramophone Editor’s Choice.

As Julie Anne Sadie pointed out, ‘the much-vaunted lean muscularity of the Ensemble Zefiro performances favours the wind instruments and, when joined with one-to-a-part strings, produces a freshly balanced sonority that alters our experience of these works’. The 250th anniversary of Telemann’s death offers now a neat incentive to re-release this successful recording – originally issued on the Ambroisie label – on which his Wassermusik, generally referred to as Hamburg Ebb and Flow, is coupled with Handel’s more familiar aquatic suites. Both are occasional pieces composed within a few years of each other, the former written to celebrate the centenary of the Admiralty in Hamburg, and the latter for royal water parties on the Thames. Unlike Handel’s work, Telemann’s suite attempts to evoke images of water, aided by references in the titles to scenes and characters associated with the sea, and may therefore be considered as ‘programme music’.

Emelie Roos (recorder), Anna Paradiso (harpsichord), Dan Laurin (recorder)

Höör Barock, Dan Laurin

The young period band Höör Barock, based in the south of Sweden, has chosen a colourful programme for its début disc. With recorder virtuoso Dan Laurin at the helm, the twelve musicians steer a course through Telemann’s celebrated Wassermusik (also known as Hamburger Ebb’ und Fluth) with its sea gods and goddesses dancing bourrées and gavottes before a rowdy crowd of seamen closes the suite with an energetic Canarie. The centre piece of the programme is Bach’s Harpsichord Concerto in F major, the composer’s arrangement of his own Brandenburg Concerto No. 4. Soloist here is Anna Paradiso, who also plays continuo in the other works of the disc. Bach is flanked on either side by two of the Op. 6 concerti grossi by another Baroque heavyweight, Arcangelo Corelli. His Concerto No. 4 and No. 8 – the much-loved Christmas Concerto – appear here in a slightly unusual guise. They are usually performed by strings alone, but inspired by recent research, Dan Laurin and his recorder-playing colleague Emelie Roos here take on the solo parts, and the tutti ensemble is joined by oboes and bassoon – while a baroque harp adds to the angelic atmosphere of the closing Christmas Pastorale of Concerto No. 8. The disc closes as it began, with Telemann, whose Concerto in B flat major for winds, strings and basso continuo is a perfect example of the composer’s art, involving playful juggling of different instrumental combinations and musical ideas.

Syrinx

“What makes this release unusual is that they are all for what Telemann might have called a Hautboisten Band, which is to say an ensemble of oboes and bassoons with continuo…Syrinx, a UK-based ensemble making their recording debut, offer a clean, well-judged and essentially attractive performances…[and] they have chosen well in varying the sounds.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2015

“Telemann’s voracious appetite for dance music of all styles, and the Syrinx ensemble’s perky playing, ensure endless pleasure in rarely heard pieces.” Sunday Times, 28th June 2015

“Syrinx’s playing is wonderfully alert to the polish, colour and personality of these pieces. This was essentially entertainment music, and Syrinx shows what a sophisticated entertainer Telemann was.” The Telegraph, 21st June 2015 ****

“..this disc will have you cheering. Maurice Steger plays the meanest recorder you will find anywhere, and while music for this instrument isn't usually regarded as the acme of excitement for thrillseekers, Steger and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin deliver blockbuster performances of all three works... Harmonia Mundi's impeccable engineering provides the finishing touch on a disc that must count as one of the most amazing and enjoyable baroque recitals of this or any other year” Classics Today 10/10

“Steger's playing is astonishing, and the generally swift tempos adopted seem merely a spur to inventive phrasing and articulation. Steger is capable of not only lightning passagework but also playing of the utmost delicacy. The ensemble is most definitely on top form, the recording is perfect” International Record Review

“the more refined inventiveness of the Berlin Akademie offers the best long term prospects … they gauge the imaginary steps of the dances with perfect grace, varying the repeats with fresh instrumental colours and ornamental twists, which beautifully elevate the simple patterns of Telemann’s music … technically thrilling but seldom overstated, it’s an ideally balanced approach.” Record Review, 24th June 2017

Vivaldi:

Flute Concerto, Op. 10 No. 1 in F major, RV 433 'La tempesta di mare'

This double album is an invitation to explore the forces of nature, so vividly depicted by the composers at the turn of the XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries.

With this stunning (and first) recording of Jean-Fery Rebel’s Les Elements, Jordi Savall displays his unmatched vision of the baroque orchestral repertoire, proving that authenticity and timbral beauty aren’t mutually exclusive.

New recordings of works by Locke, Vivaldi, Marais, Telemann and Rameau - a splendidly varied and expressively wide-ranging selection - is a welcome addition to the existing landmark recordings made by Savall in this repertoire.

Pellucid engineering complements the live performances perfectly, offering warmth without excessive resonance, and letting the players shine.

“Jordi Savall’s inventive programming explores earth, air, fire and water. The ferment of Rameau’s Tonnerre from Hippolyte meets the cooler but highly original Curtain Tune from Matthew Locke’s Tempest and Vivaldi’s bubbling Tempesta di mare concerto. Hidden in Marin Marais’ Alcione, with its tremendous Chaconne, is the surprise of a march that became a popular Christmas carol. Le Concert des Nations plays with typical verve and energy” The Guardian, 10th January 2016 ****

“a live recording of an excellent programme with the theme of musical ‘tone painting'...I enjoyed the discs very much.” Early Music Review, 24th January 2016

“Jordi Savall directs with typical grandeur and depth of tone. The subject-matter means plenty of work for the two-man wind machine and rumbling drum department, but there is exquisite contrast too in, say, the fluty stillness of Marais’s Ritournelle or the exquisitely graceful ‘sleeping Thetis’ Sarabande of the Telemann.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2016

“All through there are striking moments with Le Concert des Nations weaving some wonderful sounds with lovely textures and harmonies, particularly towards the end … Jordi Savall has gathered together a terrific collection of music to which he and Le Concert des Nations bring life and buoyancy, colour and great textures” The Classical Reviewer, 6th February 2016

“a very rewarding exploration of how several Baroque composers treated the themes of nature and the elements.” MusicWeb International, May 2016

Firma Melodiya presents recordings of baroque music performed by the Moscow Chamber Orchestra lead by Rudolf Barshai.

The name of this musician emerged in the Soviet concert life in the early 1990’s. He quickly became successful as a solo violist and ensemble player. However, his thirst for something new and his strive for breaking stereotypes, which were the way of many cultural figures of the Thaw period led him to creating the first ever Soviet chamber orchestra. An exceptionally talented conductor and organizer, Rudolf Barshai won many well-known musicians over to joint playing, including those who had promising solo careers (violinist and conductor Lev Markiz, cellist Alla Vassilieva, harpsichordist and pianist Mikhail Muntian, oboist Evgeny Nepalo, bassoonist Vladimir Bogorad and others). The performances of the new orchestra surprised and admired the listeners. Its repertoire included compositions, which were previously little known to the domestic listeners, and on the contrary some well know, even “outworn” music, which sounded in a totally new way.

The compositions featured on this album are instrumental concertos by Tomaso Albinoni and Antonio Vivaldi, the concerto grosso by George Friedrich Handel and a suite by “Bach’s fortunate rival” Georg Philipp Telemann became a discovery to the Soviet audience of the years. Even today, when we have so many alternative versions to choose from and when “authenticity” is in fashion, these recordings from fifty years ago have not lost their originality. We still feel that peculiar freshness, audacity of the pioneers who discovered a new and at the same time so contemporary world of baroque music for themselves and their listeners.

“Its appeal will lie principally with admirers of the eminent conductor, who will doubtless welcome back recordings that still possess apposite breadth and sincerity.” MusicWeb International, 18th November 2014

Zefiro, Alfredo Bernadini

The versatile, highly acclaimed early music ensemble, Zefiro, present a beautiful programme exploring the influence of water and the elements upon both Handel and Telemann, reissued at a special price for the Handel 250th anniversary this year.

Water is the element that unites Handel’s Water Music and Telemann’s Wassermusik, composed within a few years of each other. Both are occasional pieces, Handel’s Water Music being written for royal water parties on the Thames and Telemann’s Wassermusik to celebrate the centenary of the Admiralty in Hamburg. Both are also instrumental pieces displaying great expertise in writing for different string and wind instruments, together and in dialogue.

Zefiro is a versatile music group in which wind instruments are in the foreground. Recent visitors to London, their recordings are highly acclaimed and have been awarded several international prizes, including the Grand Prix du Disque.
