Bente Vist (soprano) & Henrik Metz (piano) Mozart created masterpieces in virtually all the established genres. We know him as symphonist, writer of a great many concertos, especially for piano, and a unique and very productive opera composer. His sublime chamber music was written for numerous ensembles, and he composed dozens of the most beautiful serenades and divertimentos. But as a lied composer he is perhaps rather neglected, perhaps because in the minds of many music lovers the German lied is a phenomenon that came into being with Franz Schubert some decades after Mozart’s death in 1791. In fact, Mozart wrote about thirty lieder, fourteen of which were published during his lifetime. It is hardly too much to say that he was also the most important lied composer of his day. |

Mozart’s songs are surprisingly varied in many ways. Although there isn’t a great number of them, they date from all periods of the composer’s short life and are widely diverse in character, from simple strophic charmers such as ‘Komm, lieber Mai’ (Sehnsucht nach dem Frühlinge) to extended and intensely serious utterances such as those he wrote for the Freemasons (Die ihr des unermesslichen Weltalls, from Eine kleine deutsche Kantate). They also vary in language: most are in German but he also set French and Italian texts. All are represented here, sung by two of Britain’s most popular and outstanding singers. “Sheer bliss” Sunday Times “This marvellous compilation offers no fewer than 25 Mozart songs which genuinely redress this grossly neglected part of his output. A disc which offers rich rewards” The Independent “[An] irresistible disc” The Times | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Ruth Ziesak (soprano), Lothar Odinius (tenor), Ulrich Eisenlohr (piano) & Ariane Lorch (mandolin) Mozart loved the human voice, which he used as an instrument of musical expression throughout his compositional career from the age of six or seven. His Lieder, written largely in response to requests and commissions from acquaintances, friends and publishers deal with everyday subjects such as friendship and romance but also with social and political occasions such as the Emperor Joseph II’s Turkish campaign. Some were written in connection with Mozart’s activities as a freemason. Only one, the bitter-sweet Das Veilchen (The Violet) is set to the words of a major poet, Goethe. The many miniature masterpieces to be heard on this recording include Komm, liebe Zither, komm (Come, dear Zither), a musical precursor, with mandolin accompaniment, of Don Giovanni’s serenade Deh vieni alla finestra, the idyllic Der Zauberer (The Sorcerer) and the dramatically graphic Als Luise die Briefe ihres ungetreuen Liebhabers verbrannte (When Louisa burned the letters of her unfaithful lover). “Ziesak has a very pleasing light soprano” Classics Today | | | (also available to download from $11.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. Sophie Karthäuser (soprano), Stephan Loges (baritone), Eugene Asti (piano) Will this complete recording of Mozart's songs be like one cherry too many, punctuating an already very copious dinner? In other words, will the Mozart year have stuffed the discophile to the point of nausea with projects concerning the Divine Wolfie? It is of course because we do not believe this to be the case that we offer you this disc. For, as Sylvain Fort so well remarks in his introduction, Mozart's songs have been thoroughly neglected; too often thought to be the poor relation in his output. In fact, though the quality is unequal, some wonderful pieces are to be found, mischievous, tender and nostalgic pieces. It is also a fascinating pathway through the whole of Mozart's creative life, one that ran, as is well known, from a very early childhood to the brink of death. In order to give substance to this project we have chosen three formidable artistes whose destinies have continually criss-crossed: the Belgian Sophie Karthäuser and the German Stephan Loges met as students at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London where a certain Eugene Asti was teaching. The two singers later came across each other in the prestigious Wigmore Hall Song Competition: whereas he was the winner, she received the public's prize. Then it was La Monnaie that brought them together in The Magic Flute. Eugene Asti has had the brilliant idea of uniting them once more for the songs of Mozart. A trio was born. “The voices are fresh and minds mature. Singers and pianist have a feeling for the style, its delicacy and strength, its seriousness and wit.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2008 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Born Elisabeth Sara Ameling on 8 February 1933 in Rotterdam, the Dutch soprano known as Elly Ameling won first prize at the Vocal Concours in ’s- Hertogenbosch in Holland in 1956, and the Concours International de Musique in Geneva in 1958. She gave her first formal recital in Amsterdam in 1961 and went on to perform for more than thirty years in virtually every major cultural centre in the world as one of the greatest singers of our age, renowned for her warm, unaffected personality, purity of tone and effortless technique. She made her career mainly as a concert and lieder singer, with some appearances in opera (Mozart and Haydn), and became renowned for her recitals of French and German songs and for her superlative interpretative gifts. CD 1 begins with two solo cantatas for soprano by Johann Sebastian Bach – the famous Wedding Cantata (BWV202) and ‘Non sa che sia dolore’ (BWV209) – followed by further arias from Bach cantatas and oratorios. CD 2 presents more music by Bach, with a collection of beautiful soprano arias from cantatas, accompanied by oboe and bass continuo. The oboe soloist is the Dutch virtuoso Han de Vries, who plays three different types of instrument, namely the normal oboe, the ‘oboe da caccia’ and the ‘oboe d’amore’, as specified by the composer, to striking musical effect in the various arias. In CD 3 Ameling shows her skill as an unrivalled interpreter of the music of Schubert with a collection of the composer’s best-known and most popular Lieder including ‘Die Forelle’, ‘Ave Maria’, ‘Gretchen am Spinnrade’ and ‘An die Musik. The piano accompanists are Irwin Gage and Jörg Demus. CD 4 opens with Schubert’s great showpiece for soprano and clarinet: ‘Der Hirt auf dem Felsen’ (‘The Shepherd on the Rock’), in which the clarinet soloist is George Pietersen, plus three other Schubert songs. These are followed by a group of songs by Mozart, including ‘Ridente la calma’, ‘Dans un bois solitaire’ and ‘Un moto di gioia’. The soprano is accompanied by Irwin Gage in the Schubert and Jörg Demus in the Mozart. In CDs 5 and 6, Ameling moves into the field of French song, for which she was trained by the famous French baritone Pierre Bernac. Her repertoire here encompasses many well-known songs by Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy and Francis Poulenc. She is accompanied by the distinguished pianist Dalton Baldwin, with whom she frequently performed. In CD 7 we hear a collection of much loved popular songs, typical of the mixed programmes with which the artist always delighted her audiences at recitals. These include Mendelssohn’s ‘Auf Flügeln des Gesanges’ (‘On Wings of Song’) and Grieg’s ‘Ich liebe dich’ (‘I Love You’). The disc closes with a further group of French mélodies by Poulenc. The final CD begins with a collection of Christmas songs from many lands, to which Ms Ameling brings her own special charm. Then comes a typical example of Ameling as a participant in a large-scale liturgical work, in the Kyrie from Beethoven’s Mass in C, where her clearly focussed voice blends perfectly with those of her three fellow soloists. The programme ends with the finale from Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, in which Ameling is heard as the radiant soprano soloist extolling the joys of heaven in a child-like way, with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra conducted by André Previn. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
