Cantata 'Correa nel seno amato'

Whether it be in Palermo, where Alessandro Scarlatti was born, or in Rome, where he worked as a composer, the chamber cantata was inextricably linked with the aristocratic salons of the Italian peninsula in the 1680s and 1690s. These pieces, resolutely pastoral in tone, are set in the green landscapes of the Mediterranean basin, which vibrate to the laments of the turtle-dove and the murmur of springs. All nature is invited to share the grief of lovers: Cloris weeps for Fileno, Orpheus for Eurydice, whilst the gods, the spirits, the stars are omnipresent. Scarlatti was the ideal composer to paint this enchanted realm in music.

“Three chamber cantatas, including the finest Correa nel seno amato, its opening an outpouring of rare intensity and sustained despair. Tweaking tone controls softened a tungsten edge to Kiehr voice.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2009 ****

“The three cantatas recorded here are all first-class representatives of the genre to which Scarlatti contributed hundreds of examples….Kiehr, her soprano seductively coloured with an underlying fruitiness, relishes as much as the half-dozen members of Concerto Soave the elegantly expressive intensity of each work, and controls every nuance immaculately.” Sunday Times, 20 January 2002

‘My very favourite … their [The Purcell Quartet’s] easy rapport and the stylishness of [Lynne Dawson’s] singing are quite unforgettable, and Woolley’s stunning performance … wants for nothing’ (Gramophone)
