Another exceptional, but utterly contrasting keyboard artist is the French virtuoso Cyprien Katsaris. The authoritative Piano magazine has called him “one of the greatest and most charismatic musicians of his time”. This new 7-CD release of Katsaris’s Sony Classical recordings from the early 1990s ranges from Bach concertos and Beethoven variations to transcriptions of Wagner and Mozart operas, played “with such graceful fluency, it’s easy to take his skill for granted” (BBC Music Magazine). But the main focus is on Chopin: “thrilling” Polonaises (Penguin Guide), “challenging and thought-provoking readings” (Penguin Guide) of all three Sonatas, and performances of the complete Préludes that “benefit from this pianist’s sharp attention to detail and character” (ClassicsToday).

Much of Samson François’s pianistic career was devoted to performing and recording the works of Frédéric Chopin.

A musician to whom many Chopin scholars are indebted, François was famed for bringing the intricacies of Chopin’s piano works to life, in a way no performer had done before him. Also featuring the Monte-Carlo National Opera Orchestra, conducted by Louis Frémaux, this collection includes some of Chopin’s greatest masterpieces, performed with spellbinding musicality by the eminent French pianist.

“Overall, François is most successful in [the Scherzos, the Polonaise Fantasy Op. 61, the Fantasy in F minor Op. 49] and the set is worth having for those performances alone. The strength and intensity of the playing carries the music’s story along and involves the listener with it.” MusicWeb International, 22nd October 2013
