“These are massive, massively registered performances in a gigantic acoustic. Non-experts will find it all a bit much - but in Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen especially, Alain conjures up some lovely quiet sounds, with poetry to match.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2012 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Barber, S: | Adagio for Strings, Op. 11 (arr. “Following eight highly acclaimed discs of 'Organ Fireworks', the winning combination of Christopher Herrick and Hyperion turn their attention towards the calmer and more reflective repertory grouped under the title 'Organ Dreams'. Volume 2 consists mostly of original organ music spanning the period 1815-1952, all of which fits the instrument in Ripon Cathedral like a well-tailored glove. Not every title reflects a dream-like state, though the disc's opening track – Dubois' Inparadisum creates an aura of calm. Frank Bridge's oft-played Adagio in E is also smoothly shaped, with its grand climax carefully controlled. Guilmant's 'Rêve' of 1902 is delicious, its impressionistic perfume wafting effortlessly. With a running time of 19 minutes, Elgar's rarely heard Vesper Voluntaries of 1889 form the centrepiece of Herrick's programme. What charmers they are: mostly mezzopiano in dynamic, with occasional fuller-bodied outbursts, none of them outstays its welcome. They are followed by Howells' rambling Siciliano (the most recent piece on the disc), which Herrick keeps moving. However, he does allow himself plenty of time for William Strickland's convincing arrangement of Barber's Adagio. The Liszt is a shameless piece of kitsch which borrows freely from Allegri's Miserere and Mozart's Ave verum corpus. More worthwhile are Schumann's Study and a quartet of miniatures by Samuel Wesley. The only fault with the whole package is that the portrait purporting to be that of Wesley senior is, in fact, that of his natural son, Samuel Sebastian. In summary, this thoroughly enjoyable disc is sensitively and affectionately played, and works well at a single hearing.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Olivier Latry (piano pedalier erard, Paris, 1853, Musee De La Musique collection) Naïve’s prestigious ‘Cité de la Musique’ series presents a new recording of pieces originally written for - and here played on - a rarely performed instrument of the past, the pedal piano. This intriguing CD includes two monumental works by Franz Liszt, Evocation à la Chapelle Sixtine and the Prelude and Fugue on B-A-C-H, as well as music by Boëly, Schumann’s Four Sketches opus 58, two preludes by Alkan, and Brahms’ Prelude and Fugue in G minor Woo 10. The Cité de la Musique in Paris is a major centre covering all musical genres and repertoires. Along with two concert halls, it includes a museum of early instruments. Naïve and the Cité de la Musique have launched a series in which great performers record on legendary instruments. This new volume is dedicated to an instrument scarcely played, the pedal piano, which belongs to a line of instruments which, like the organ, are equipped with a pedal keyboard. In the middle of the 19th century several major composers wrote pieces for pedal piano, including those featured on this CD. Olivier Latry is regarded as one of the leading organists of his generation, both in France and on the international scene. After a period as organist of Meaux Cathedral from 1981 to 1985, he was only twenty-three when selected by competitive examination to become principal organist at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. “This isn’t a simple grand piano with an organ pedal board attached — the range, layout and undoubtedly feel are completely different. The sound has the characteristic hardness of pianos from the period, and Latry refrains from attempting too much nuance.” Sunday Times, 30th October 2011 “it's a revelation to hear Schumann's Sketches, or the original version of Liszt's Prelude and Fugue on B-A-C-H played as intended. Not all the pieces are great, but there are some gems...Latry's performances are utterly convincing.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2012 **** “Realistically recorded, there is no disguising the fact that the pedalier is a percussion instrument (try Schumann's Op. 58 No. 4) which produces a certain amount of clunking in the playing process. True, the five short Boely works are charming curiosities, but it is two of Alkan's Op. 66 Preludes that impress the most. The disc is nicely presented, as you'd expect from Naïve” Gramophone Magazine, December 2011 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. | | | Liszt: Organ Works, Vol. 1
“Budget-priced Naxos can afford to be more comprehensive and spread Liszt's organ music over two discs, and indeed, it's good to have St. Francis preaching to the birds, which works so well on the instrument, as well as the three Consolations, originally for piano...If you want the B-A-C-H Prelude and Fugue, the Evocation and Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, Naxos will do nicely.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2001 | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. Peter King (Klais organ, Bath Abbey) This 3 CD set contains all of Liszt’s major original organ works, together with a selection of virtuoso transcriptions of Liszt’s orchestral and piano works by Camille Saint-Saëns, Max Reger, Edwin Lemare, Nicolas Kynaston, and Peter King. Played on the magnificent Klais organ of Bath Abbey. 3 CD set at special price. An essential collection for Liszt year! “King's freshly conceived Prelude and Fugue on B-A-C-H is gripping...one of the attractions of this recording is the clarity with which the music emerges from the newish (1997) Klais instrument in Bath Abbey. Arranged over three discs, each a self-contained, balanced programme featuring one of the big works and several smaller pieces, this is a fitting tribute to a composer who revolutionised organ composition.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2011 **** “I cannot recall such a comprehensive collection as this, with its tempting additional selection of transcriptions by Saint-Saens, Reger, Kynaston, Lemare and Peter King himself...King's illuminating accompanying essay is illustrated with music examples. Altogether I doubt if there will be an organ contribution to the Liszt bicentennial which can better this.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2011 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
