Along with his friend Caruso, Fritz Kreisler (1875–1962) was one of the superstars of the early gramophone era. He was “the master musician among the violinists of the day” (New York Times); he died 50 years ago (29 January 1962). As a composer, he is famous for his Viennese-style melodies, such as Liebesfreud and Liebesleid, for his notorious pieces “in the style of” various 18th-century masters (which he passed off as their original works, claiming to have rediscovered them in old manuscripts), and for his arrangements of well-known works by other composers.

We remember one of the world’s greatest violinists with an enticing 2CD set that includes a first time release on CD of a tribute LP from 1961, original Kreisler recordings, and an array of great modern violinists playing his works.

In Imitation of Albeniz

Mischa Maisky (cello) & Lily Maisky (piano)

In describing ¡España!, Mischa Maisky has stated, “I’ve included Spanish music in my programmes for many years and have been waiting for a chance to record these pieces.” This is his first album with his daughter, the gifted pianist Lily Maisky. Mischa Maisky, “the genius of the cello” (Melómano, Madrid), says that “Emotionally speaking, I feel very close to this music. Wherever I play Granados, Falla and Albéniz onstage, the response is always hugely enthusiastic.”

“This is an attractive recital of transcriptions of favourite Spanish pieces - I hesitate to describe them as 'lollipops' as they are more than that...Mischa Maisky demonstrates a natural feeling for this colourful music...[the Shchedrin] makes a spectacular end to a recital by this admirably matched father-and-daughter duo, very beautifully recorded in the Bavarian Schloss-Elmau.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2012

“Maisky is true to himself, and so he brings a fresh and thoughtful perspective to music that can be hackneyed...Maisky's generous tone suits his interpretative approach well, and if this disc is not strong on animal excitement, it is nevertheless a sensuous experience...[Lily Maisky] is an alert and very capable partner. She is not overshadowed by the cello but manages to convey a personality of her own.” International Record Review, June 2012

Jorge Bolet (piano)

Jorge Bolet was an avowed Romantic, happy to relax once the serious business of his recital is over. Like Moiseiwitsch, he could be mischievously enterprising, challenging his audience to guess the composer of this or that rare poetic jewel or confection - or, like Rubinstein, he could affectionately confirm and recreate their favourites.

With delightful old world charm, fleet of finger, yet ever conscious of the singing line, Bolet weaves pure magic in this collection of encores. After a long absence from the catalogue, this disc returns, now at budget price.

“...the unfailing wizardry of Bolet. He is also splendidly recorded. It is difficult to see how an encore-fancier could greet this record with anything but the most delighted of, well encores.” Gramophone Magazine

Chanson “Coin de rue”

arranged by Mr Nobody

“I was lucky to grow up in a country where we can enjoy silence. To get to the mountains, to hear a brook running, a bird singing, that’s really music for me” Leif Ove Andsnes

'Unique among the piano virtuosos of his generation, Leif Ove Andsnes is a thinker, a listener, a keyboard poet' New York Times

“…everything here is a delight. Mompou's miniatures grow under Andsnes's skilful hands, Scriabin exudes his perfume, and Smetana evokes the full-dress glory of Central European domestic pianism. Pieces by Grieg and Johan Halvorsen bring this patriotic Norwegian lad back home.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2006 *****

“Andsnes here reveals a hitherto hidden side to his art – the salon charmer. Some of the pieces are favourites from his childhood, though it is not every nine-year-old who has tackled Sibelius's uncharacteristically jolly 'Staccato' Etude or mastered Chopin's First Impromptu with such fluency and grace. Appealing, too, is the drama and sweep he brings to Liszt's Liebestraum No 3 (though it will not suit everyone's taste) and his avoidance of cliché, while the Norwegian's own transcription of Halvorsen's Chant de Veslemöy (originally for violin), Ibert's Le petit âne blanc and Debussy's Clair de lune are played with a beguil- ing innocence, ravishing tonal finesse and – most important – palpable affection.
Bravura highlights include Gieseking's effulgent transcription of Richard Strauss's Ständchen and Smetana's Am Seegestade ('By the sea'), reminiscent of Raff's La fileuse and a rare example of a concert étude that opens in one key (B major) and closes a tone lower! Enterprisingly, Andsnes has tracked down a score of Charles Trénet's song Coin de rue transcribed by the coyly named 'Mr Nobody' whom I have no qualms about outing as none other than Alexis Weissenberg.
The whole recital is superbly recorded. As Andsnes himself says, 'It's great to see people walk away from a concert with a smile on their face'. This disc has the same effect.”

Ben Breen (violin) & Milton Kaye (piano)

Following the success of Ben Breen’s first CD for Tall Poppies (Brahms Sonatas, TP172), he has teamed up again with veteran pianist Milton Kaye, for their second recording together. Sadly Milton Kaye has now passed away, so this CD is the last in his long legacy of contributions to the recording industry.

The music presented here is a selection of the salon music popular in the early 20th century. This music serves to present the personality and virtuosity of the performers, and each piece was often used as an encore after a strenuous recital. The works fitted well on the early twelve-inch 78 rpm discs, and these were often played on the radio. It is through these pieces that the musicians often gained a huge and devoted following.

As Milton Kaye has so often accompanied legendary violinists, such as Jascha Heifetz and Oscar Shumsky, that this music is in his blood. Australian violinist Ben Breen, a somewhat younger musician, has taken this style of music-making and made it his own. For this recording he has borrowed a gorgeous 1715 Guarneri violin which contributes significantly to the warmth of tone. His energy and virtuosity are partnered by Kaye’s understanding and experience.
