In September 1790, following the death of his princely employer, court composer Haydn and his entire orchestra were sacked. As he was considering this change in circumstances, Haydn received an unexpected visit from Johann Peter Salomon, a German impresario based in London, who made him a tempting offer: an opera, six symphonies and twenty other pieces to be written for the city, and a guaranteed income from a new concert series. So it was that, on 2 January 1791, Haydn arrived in England for the first of two visits that would leave an indelible mark both on the musical life of his host country and on the composer himself. This program was innovatively devised by one of the leading Haydn interpreters of our time, Christopher Hogwood, who also directs the performances and plays the fortepiano parts. It explores the more intimate side of Haydn, and the extensive notes by Hogwood himself give us a glimpse of the more intimate world of Haydn's relationship with the patrons and the many real friends he met while he was this side of the Channel. It intersperses songs with chamber music, includes a late but rarely-performed String Quartet (Op. 71 No. 3) and concludes with a delectable arrangement of the ‘Surprise’ Symphony for piano, string quartet and flute. Hogwood is, of course, well known for his Haydn interpretations and while his Haydn symphony cycle for L’Oiseau-Lyre will go down in recording history as one of the Great Incomplete Projects, this 2-LP set, originally recorded in 1978 for L’Oiseau-Lyre, now appears complete on CD for the first time. Executive producer: Ian Atkins Recording producer: Adam Skeaping Assistant producer: Fanny Warnock Balance engineer: Adam Skeaping Recording location: Rosslyn Hill Chapel, London, UK, September 1978 “Thirty years on, this collection ranging from jolly folksong arrangements to a 'chamber' Surprise Symphony shows Hogwood's Haydn has lost none of its fresh-faced missionary zeal.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2011 **** “handsomely produced, very well recorded” Gramophone Magazine | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

It is well known that Haydn was a favoured visitor to London towards the end of his life and spent much time in the English capital. In addition to the famous ‘London’ symphonies he wrote a considerable amount of other music whilst he was here, including chamber works and, particularly, songs, many of them to English words by his friend Anne Hunter. All of the famous ones are here, along with other, German, settings and the extended scena ‘Arianna a Naxos’, to an anonymous Italian text. “There can’t be many more delightful ways of spending an hour than in the company of these songs” International Record Review “Another outstanding song issue from Hyperion” Sunday Times “A winner” Fanfare “Much subtle musicianship in fine and neglected repertory and I am sure that no one who buys it will be disappointed” Gramophone Magazine “Even those weaned on fortepiano-led Haydn will be hard pushed to find fault with this dream team” The Independent on Sunday | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Anne Cabrier (soprano) & Jan Vermeulen (pianoforte) Haydn’s songs are relatively subordinate in his oeuvre and were composed to be performed by amateurs. Haydn’s lieder is sadly often relegated to the opening ‘warm-up’ sections of recitals, or, even worse, totally neglected. This is a pity, for as collectors of Brilliant Classics cycle of all his Scottish Songs will know, there is much wit, warm humour and not a little drama to found in these gems. The songs on this CD span 1781 –95, and the first two sets were written for the Viennese socialite Franz Sales von Greiner, who regularly advised Haydn on the choice of texts. The third set is probably the best known works in this programme. The ‘English Canzonettas’ were written for Haydn’s friend Lady Anne Hunter, the widow of eminent surgeon Sir John Hunter. Anne provided the texts for the first group, and one for the second. Haydn turned to Metastasio for the remainder. The ‘Pastoral Song’ became a firm favourite with the Victorians, and was a parlour song ‘hit’. These Philips recording have long been unavailable: here they make a welcome return to the catalogue ‘Those who love them [Haydn’s songs], and love Elly Ameling, will not be disappointed in this generous recital…Ameling’s skill lies in her precise judgement of their scale…Jorg Demus’s accompanying is half the fun: he makes the keys speak as clearly and sweetly as any fortepiano…’ Gramophone Full sung texts and booklet notes A must for lovers of this popular and much-loved singer “Good to be reminded in this anniversary year of Elly Ameling's irresistibly wide-eyed yet sophisticated way with Haydn's English, Italian and German songs. Jörg Demus is master-accompanist.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2009 **** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

Born Elisabeth Sara Ameling on 8 February 1933 in Rotterdam, the Dutch soprano known as Elly Ameling won first prize at the Vocal Concours in ’s- Hertogenbosch in Holland in 1956, and the Concours International de Musique in Geneva in 1958. She gave her first formal recital in Amsterdam in 1961 and went on to perform for more than thirty years in virtually every major cultural centre in the world as one of the greatest singers of our age, renowned for her warm, unaffected personality, purity of tone and effortless technique. She made her career mainly as a concert and lieder singer, with some appearances in opera (Mozart and Haydn), and became renowned for her recitals of French and German songs and for her superlative interpretative gifts. CD 1 begins with two solo cantatas for soprano by Johann Sebastian Bach – the famous Wedding Cantata (BWV202) and ‘Non sa che sia dolore’ (BWV209) – followed by further arias from Bach cantatas and oratorios. CD 2 presents more music by Bach, with a collection of beautiful soprano arias from cantatas, accompanied by oboe and bass continuo. The oboe soloist is the Dutch virtuoso Han de Vries, who plays three different types of instrument, namely the normal oboe, the ‘oboe da caccia’ and the ‘oboe d’amore’, as specified by the composer, to striking musical effect in the various arias. In CD 3 Ameling shows her skill as an unrivalled interpreter of the music of Schubert with a collection of the composer’s best-known and most popular Lieder including ‘Die Forelle’, ‘Ave Maria’, ‘Gretchen am Spinnrade’ and ‘An die Musik. The piano accompanists are Irwin Gage and Jörg Demus. CD 4 opens with Schubert’s great showpiece for soprano and clarinet: ‘Der Hirt auf dem Felsen’ (‘The Shepherd on the Rock’), in which the clarinet soloist is George Pietersen, plus three other Schubert songs. These are followed by a group of songs by Mozart, including ‘Ridente la calma’, ‘Dans un bois solitaire’ and ‘Un moto di gioia’. The soprano is accompanied by Irwin Gage in the Schubert and Jörg Demus in the Mozart. In CDs 5 and 6, Ameling moves into the field of French song, for which she was trained by the famous French baritone Pierre Bernac. Her repertoire here encompasses many well-known songs by Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy and Francis Poulenc. She is accompanied by the distinguished pianist Dalton Baldwin, with whom she frequently performed. In CD 7 we hear a collection of much loved popular songs, typical of the mixed programmes with which the artist always delighted her audiences at recitals. These include Mendelssohn’s ‘Auf Flügeln des Gesanges’ (‘On Wings of Song’) and Grieg’s ‘Ich liebe dich’ (‘I Love You’). The disc closes with a further group of French mélodies by Poulenc. The final CD begins with a collection of Christmas songs from many lands, to which Ms Ameling brings her own special charm. Then comes a typical example of Ameling as a participant in a large-scale liturgical work, in the Kyrie from Beethoven’s Mass in C, where her clearly focussed voice blends perfectly with those of her three fellow soloists. The programme ends with the finale from Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, in which Ameling is heard as the radiant soprano soloist extolling the joys of heaven in a child-like way, with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra conducted by André Previn. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
