Christian Gerhaher is the outstanding Lieder singer of our time. His recordings of the art songs and song cycles by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms and Mahler possess reference status, and have been awarded many major prizes. In the UK alone his awards include the 2009 BBC Music Magazine Award for Vocal Performance, a Gramophone award in 2006, and in 2011 he won the Olivier Outstanding Achievement in Opera award. Gerhaher now presents his first ‘concept album’, which is at the same time his first album of songs by multiple composers in 10 years. ‘Ferne Geliebte’ (Distant Beloved) juxtaposes compositions from the two great Vienna schools, Viennese Classicism on the one hand, represented by Haydn and Beethoven, and the Second Viennese School with Schönberg and Berg on the other. The connection between them all is their preoccupation with loneliness, longing and hopeless love. Christian Gerhaher is accompanied on the piano by his permanent duo partner Gerold Huber. “He treats the cycles with the same care for the meaning of every word, beauty of tone, subtle emphasis and shading...Both the Schoenberg and the Berg are usually sung by a soprano or mezzo...But hearing them juxtaposed in such poised performances – Gerold Huber is Gerhaher's acutely sensitive partner – seems totally logical.” The Guardian, 14th June 2012 ***** “Rather than a purely beautiful voice, Gerhaher's approach is intently text-focused, making the consonants sound as strongly as the vowels, responsive to every twist and turn of the poetry.” The Observer, 17th June 2012 “Gerhaher delivers text so incisively and with such vitality that these songs leap from the page more vividly than ever before. I doubt that the Schoenberg and Berg cycles have been more lyrically sung, either. Huber’s expressive playing is vital to this indivisible partnership’s most challenging, but ultimately most rewarding, achievement on disc.” Sunday Times, 9th July 2012 “Gerhaher is an unrivalled lieder singer, and his partnership with Huber is a reproof to the one-night-stand recitals brokered by many record labels.” The Independent on Sunday, 22nd July 2012 “Admirers of Gerhaher...will need no encouragement to...be re-acquainted with his beautiful baritone, clean diction and highly cultivated interpretative stance. The programme he has selected with pianist Gerold Huber will not, however, appeal to everyone...though the softness of Gerhaher’s timbre and the intelligence of his word-painting gives them an ideally seductive cushion.” Financial Times, 4th August 2012 *** “a recital of rare and compelling musical intelligence and integrity of response...But as well as the intellectual satisfaction of this recital, there is also the sheer delight of Gerhaher's superbly cultivated baritone, and his outstanding artistry. If ever art concealed art, it is here” BBC Music Magazine, September 2012 ***** “The Beethoven cycle immediately reacquaints us with Gerhaher's familiar virtues of a beautiful, even voice and unforced clarity of diction...Others have portrayed more suggestively the highly coloured, alien dream-world the cycle seems to inhabit...but few have shown how intimately Stefan George's poems determine the pitches and rhythms of Schoenberg's singing combines lyrical beauty with meticulous detail.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2012 “Gerhaher is now clearly at the peak of his career, as regards his ability to align beauty of sound to remarkably sincere and unfussy delivery of text...The whole of the programme is presented with consistently elegant and thoughtful artistry...[Huber is] a superbly sensitive partner throughout” International Record Review, September 2012 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

It is well known that Haydn was a favoured visitor to London towards the end of his life and spent much time in the English capital. In addition to the famous ‘London’ symphonies he wrote a considerable amount of other music whilst he was here, including chamber works and, particularly, songs, many of them to English words by his friend Anne Hunter. All of the famous ones are here, along with other, German, settings and the extended scena ‘Arianna a Naxos’, to an anonymous Italian text. “There can’t be many more delightful ways of spending an hour than in the company of these songs” International Record Review “Another outstanding song issue from Hyperion” Sunday Times “A winner” Fanfare “Much subtle musicianship in fine and neglected repertory and I am sure that no one who buys it will be disappointed” Gramophone Magazine “Even those weaned on fortepiano-led Haydn will be hard pushed to find fault with this dream team” The Independent on Sunday | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

Anne Cabrier (soprano) & Jan Vermeulen (pianoforte) Haydn’s songs are relatively subordinate in his oeuvre and were composed to be performed by amateurs. Nonetheless, they are carefully structured and served to help establish him in the open market. His English Canzonettas show a great variety of moods ranging from lively sea pieces to pastoral. Stephanie d'Oustrac (mezzo-soprano) & Aline Zylberajch (fortepiano) “This disc was originally the idea of the Ambronay team: our strong respective temperaments, our affinities for Baroque music were among the many arguments they put forward with infectious enthusiasm to encourage Aline Zylberajch and myself to embark on a duo recording project for Ambronay Éditions. We then met to read through some of the pieces. Little by little, a guiding thread evoking Schumann’s famous song cycle Frauenliebe und leben (A woman’s love and life) prompted us to choose from among Haydn’s finest works a programme of lieder and canzonettas illustrating the universal theme of the cycle of love: from the girl dreaming of love to her first experience of it, from the beloved woman to her abandoned sister… Haydn’s musical style, the psychological evolution of the protagonists of his songs, and the palette of colours, emotions, and expressions this stimulates, brought us rich emotions and joys during our work on the recording. For my part, I also had the good fortune to discover a delightful personality behind a remarkable musician in the person of Aline. In conclusion, ‘Das Leben ist ein Traum’ thanks to music!” Stéphanie d’Oustrac “She combines a warm, flavoursome mezzo with a fiery dramatic temperament...to each of these songs, even the most guileless, she brings an intense personal involvement...Throughout [Arianna a Naxos] she is vividly responsive to the meaning of the Italian text and to harmonic colour.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

Haydn’s lieder is sadly often relegated to the opening ‘warm-up’ sections of recitals, or, even worse, totally neglected. This is a pity, for as collectors of Brilliant Classics cycle of all his Scottish Songs will know, there is much wit, warm humour and not a little drama to found in these gems. The songs on this CD span 1781 –95, and the first two sets were written for the Viennese socialite Franz Sales von Greiner, who regularly advised Haydn on the choice of texts. The third set is probably the best known works in this programme. The ‘English Canzonettas’ were written for Haydn’s friend Lady Anne Hunter, the widow of eminent surgeon Sir John Hunter. Anne provided the texts for the first group, and one for the second. Haydn turned to Metastasio for the remainder. The ‘Pastoral Song’ became a firm favourite with the Victorians, and was a parlour song ‘hit’. These Philips recording have long been unavailable: here they make a welcome return to the catalogue ‘Those who love them [Haydn’s songs], and love Elly Ameling, will not be disappointed in this generous recital…Ameling’s skill lies in her precise judgement of their scale…Jorg Demus’s accompanying is half the fun: he makes the keys speak as clearly and sweetly as any fortepiano…’ Gramophone Full sung texts and booklet notes A must for lovers of this popular and much-loved singer “Good to be reminded in this anniversary year of Elly Ameling's irresistibly wide-eyed yet sophisticated way with Haydn's English, Italian and German songs. Jörg Demus is master-accompanist.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2009 **** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
