The Cunning Little Vixen - Suite

Sinfonietta

Schluch und Jau, music for Gerhart Hauptmann's play

Jealousy (original prelude to Jenufa)

Káta Kabanová Overture

Taras Bulba

Sárka, overture

“Issued to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth, this two-disc set of orchestral works may be the last Janácek recording from our greatest advocate of his work, Sir Charles Mackerras.
Where his pioneering Pro Arte recording of the Sinfonietta has an earthy quality and Decca's Vienna version is ripe and resonant, the new one is generally lighter and more flexible. The live performance brings dividends in its flow and the build-up of excitement, thrillingly caught when the fanfare theme returns to cap the finale.
Where most versions of the Cunning LittleVixen Suite use Václav Talich's reorchestration, Mackerras has gone back to the original. As he says, the orchestral writing may seem unusual, but it certainly isn't amateurish, where Talich's version, for all its beauty, 'rather emasculates the acid sounds produced for the insects'. but it certainly isn't amateurish, where Talich's version, for all its beauty, 'rather emasculates the acid sounds produced for the insects'.
Mackerras includes two tiny interludes for Kát'a Kabanová which he discovered in Prague, written when the German Theatre needed more time for scene changes. Rightly, he regards them as little jewels, well worth preserving.
The rarity is the incidental music for Gerhardt Hauptmann's play, Schluck und Jau, which Janácek was writing at the time of his death. The first of the two completed movements brings intriguing echoes of the fanfares in the Sinfonietta and the second in 5/8 time is equally original in its instrumentation, with deep trombones and stratospheric violins.
The helpful acoustic of the Rudolfinum gives a mellow quality to the refined playing of the Czech Philharmonic, with ample space round the sound, without underplaying the contrasts of wind and strings which are so typical of the composer.”

Sinfonietta

Taras Bulba

The Cunning Little Vixen - Suite

“This Sinfonietta is just about the most lyrical I can remember…the Sinfonietta in particular offers a fine alternative – and for the stunning SACD sound.” Michael Scott Rohan, BBC Music Magazine

“Released to mark the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra's 60th anniversary, this powerful Janácek triptych reinforces the favourable impression made by these artists both on disc and in concert. Jonathan Nott's Sinfonietta is something of a 'grower', a thoughtful, defiantly unsensational reading which takes a number of hearings to reveal its lasting qualities. Aside from a hint of fluster at the più mosso marking in the finale, the Bambergers respond with striking accomplishment to their British chief, who directs with intelligence, thrusting purpose and a keen eye for detail. Admittedly, there's greater tenderness in the initial Moderato of the central tableau than Nott chooses to find (Kubelík and his wonderfully pliable and expressive Bavarian RSO really do melt the heart every time) but how judiciously he controls his massed forces in the jubilant panoply towards the close – the cumulative effect is properly rousing, noble and unflashy. A shame the sound doesn't quite 'open out' ideally here, though otherwise there can be nothing but praise for a vividly truthful co-production between Tudor and Bavarian Radio.
The suite from The Cunning Little Vixen – not Talich's much-loved overview but an earlier, 16-minute selection by Brno-born František Jílek (1913-93) – also offers much to enjoy. Only Taras Bulba slightly disappoints: articulate, painstakingly prepared and observant, yes, but it never truly catches fire.”

"He was an amazing musician. There can be very few conductors who can manage stylistically the breadth that he did. But I think my favourite contribution from him was bringing Czech music to the West." This is the opera star Renée Fleming's glowing description of Sir Charles Mackerras, whose long and incredibly fruitful conducting career and life ended at the age of 84 this July. Indeed, over the past few decades Czech music has not had a more vigorous advocate and champion in the world, nor a greater fan and connoisseur. Throughout the music world, Mackerras’s name is synonymous with Czech music itself – Janáček in particular. Sir Charles fatefully encountered Janáček during the very first days of his studies with Václav Talich in Prague. Subsequently, he introduced Janáček to the wider world. "Nobody needs me to say that Mozart and Handel are great composers, whereas they did need somebody to say that Janáček is a great composer too, and that’s what I did. If I have achieved anything in my life, it is the propagation of Janáček." Supraphon had the truly great honour of co-operating with this superlative conductor until the very end. The albums featuring the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in particular have captured Mackerras’s vision of a wide scale of works by the four greatest Czech composers. The list of awards these recordings have received is long... Let us then instead spend our time listening to his musical legacy on these CDs, which Supraphon with respect and love for Sir Charles presents to all those who would like to recollect this great man.

4 CDs and DVD

“Even the recording acoustic is warm, enough sometimes to curl the music’s edges and smudge away little details. But Mackerras’s handling of this repertoire is so fresh, so responsive to the folk-music gestures embedded within, that you still listen beaming...No matter what the new year brings, these commemorative boxes should give comfort and joy.” The Times, 17th December 2010
