| | | Vivaldi - Double Concertos
The Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin transports us to the Venice of the ‘red-haired priest’. Vivaldi gives pride of place to virtuosity: the concerto grosso tends to be supplanted by solo instrumentalists – as is clearly demonstrated by all the works presented on this CD. A majority of ‘double concertos’ (i.e. with two soloists) alternates with solo or ripieno concertos. A feast of sumptuous music-making! | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | An Italian Rant!Italian Masters in Britain
L’Avventura London, Zak Ozmo (director) An Italian Rant! finds Zak Ozmo and his ensemble L’Avventura London exploring the music of the most celebrated 18th-century Italian composers and their intriguing ties to Britain. Italian instrumental music captivated 18thcentury Britain with its tunefulness, drama and sheer beauty. For this project, director Žak Ozmo has handpicked repertoire that allows L’Avventura London to explore a new dimension to several Italian favourites, and shed light on less known, but equally beautiful, works by Geminiani and Paradisi. This disc also reveals the talents of neglected composer G. B. Cervetto with a premiere of his marvellous Sonata in G minor. Highlights include Corelli’s ‘La Follia’ (played with dramatic passion by Bojan Cicic), Geoffrey Coates’s hauntingly beautiful interpretation of Albinoni’s Oboe Concerto, Op. 9 and a brilliant performance of Paradisi’s idiosyncratic Sonata No. 7, by harpsichordist David Gordon. The recording ends with a lighthearted, free arrangement by Zac Ozmo of one of the most famous Italian popular dance songs of the 17th century (it went by a multitude of names, including ‘Barabano’, ‘Fuggi, fuggi’ and ‘La Mantovana‘). The London publisher John Playford issued it under the title of ‘An Italian Rant’, a memorable phrase that has inspired this collection of Italian baroque music with ties to Britain. L’Avventura London performs with the same benchmark energy, integrity, and creative, dynamic musicmaking demonstrated in the critically successful Handel in the Playhouse. “The folksy 'Rant' reflects 18th-century London's 'Italomania'. A Cervetto sonata and Geminiani's Scottish tune arrangement are captivating.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 **** “There is much little-known repertoire to savour here...the variety of textures and instrumental sound is one of the most attractive features of this disc, characterised as it is by sensitive musicianship and an admirable understanding of Baroque performance conventions.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |

| | | Vivaldi - Concerti e Sinfonie per archi
“…without a soloist, the spotlight is completely on the orchestra, which is lithe, colourful, virtuosic… the enjoyment emanating from the players is palpable, and why this brightly-recorded disc has waited three years to be issued is a complete mystery.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2006 ***** “This collection draws from Vivaldi's 'Concerti per archi', concertos for strings and continuo without the flamboyant writing for solo instruments found in the majority of the Red Priest's orchestral works. Across 68 minutes Vivaldi seems to have a seemingly inexhaustible arsenal of tricks, but it's never merely superficial. All the music on offer here is unmistakably Vivaldian: although there is common ground in many of these 'concerti per archi', they contain a dazzling kaleidoscope of moods and textures. Andrea Marcon directs vivid, strongly etched performances that often reach fiery intensity. Things get off to a sizzling start with the precocious beginning of RV111a, and the opening Allegro of RV157 is a perfect illustration of Marcon's fondness for wonderfully incisive yet flowing continuo. But there are also notable moments of exquisite beauty, such as a gorgeously played Largo from RV127. The Adagio in RV121 is an evocative hushed moment graced with lovely theorbo playing. It is easy to notice the athleticism of the Venice Baroque Orchestra's vigorous playing of fast movements, yet it is equally significant that the group perform Vivaldi's slower music with tenderness.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 8 - 10 working days. |

| | | Vivaldi - String Concertos Volume 3
“This third volume of Collegium Musicum 90's survey of Vivaldi's string concertos offers a varied selection of works which bears testament to their composer's untiring imagination. Vivaldi composed more than 40 of these sparky little miniatures, united by an (almost) uniform adoption of a three-movement format and by the lack anywhere of any kind of soloist; for this reason they're also sometimes known either as 'concertos for orchestra' or 'ripieno concertos'. None lasts longer than eight minutes, and most come in under five. CM90 perform with accomplished ease, attempting nothing outrageous but maintaining a relaxed bonhomie and clear-cut eloquence entirely suited to the music's modest aspirations. Theirs isn't the taut Vivaldi sound we have become used to hearing from other ensembles, but they have no difficulty serving up lyrical sweetness or joyous energy as required. Realistically and lucidly recorded, the disc leaves little to be desired.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
