This set contains a selection of the recordings by the great French violinist focusing on his prowess as a chamber musician. Ferras was born in 1933 of musical parentage – his father had been a violinist and a pupil of Marcel Chailley, a devotee and friend of Saint-Saëns. Though Christian’s talent was not in dispute, his father was extremely pushy and the undue pressure he exerted on his young son probably led to the mental instability that led to Ferras’s suicide in 1982. At the age of 8, Ferras enrolled at the Paris Conservatoire and in 1943 won first prize. He recorded for the major record companies, and his colleague and friend, the violinist Zino Francescatti, commented that these recordings with Pierre Barbizet made in 1968 over five days were ‘musical perfection’. Ferras was ranked alongside Oistrakh, Stern, Menuhin and Francescatti in the top five violinists of his age, and it was Ferras whom Menuhin chose as ‘the ideal partner’ for the recording of the Bach Double Concerto for EMI in 1959. Included are the three Brahms sonatas, the two by Schumann and those by Franck and the intriguing, short-lived Belgian Lekeu. Disc 4 contains encores that Ferras was especially fond of. This set is a superb portrait of a great artist, who was gifted beyond anyone’s wildest dreams but lost the fight with his inner demons of depression and alcohol dependency. Essential listening for all lovers of the violin ‘Ferras is a player who habitually turns the simplest of melodic lines to poetical song … Lovers of the César Franck who happen not to know the Lekeu could well find a real extension of their pleasure in this very good record.’ Gramophone ‘Finely balanced yet ardent performance of the (Brahms) First Sonata.’ Gramophone Extensive booklet tribute to and survey of Ferras’s life and career | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Mendelssohn: Piano Works
Felix Mendelssohn was a virtuoso pianist, and it is worth remembering that he was born in 1809, with his friend Schumann being born a year later in 1810, as was Chopin, and Liszt following in 1811. These composers were among the greatest pianists of the 19th century, and they were born at a time when the piano was a relatively modern instrument, and composers such as Hummel, Moscheles (Mendelssohn’s friend), Kalkbrenner and Ries were accorded adulation similar to pop stars today. Beethoven commenced his career in the 1790s as a virtuoso pianist. No surprise then that the young Mendelssohn composed extensively for his chosen instrument from the outset. From early concertos and sonatas he quickly established his ‘mature’ style in works such as the Rondo capriccioso, and the Andante cantabile e Presto agitato. The masterpieces that followed include the remarkably imposing Variations serieuses and the famous Songs without Words. Mendelssohn’s style did not change throughout his short creative life – he very quickly composed in what we know as his mature style from his early teens, something even Mozart didn’t achieve. This 4CD contains the Songs without Words, Variations serieuse, Kinderstucke, Rondo capriccioso, Capriccio, and Trois Fantasies ou Caprices plus several shorter works. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

For many years Mendelssohn's music for the keyboard was neglected but this six CD set, so beautifully played by Martin Jones, will do much to earn Mendelssohn's music for the keyboard the attention it deserves.” Contemporary Review | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

Fritz Kreisler was born in Vienna in 1875. His father was Jewish and his mother a Roman Catholic. He was the youngest pupil ever to enter the Conservatoire in Vienna, where he was taught by Anton Bruckner. He then went to Paris to continue his studies with, among others, Leo Delibes and Jules Massenet. He was 13 years old when he made his American début in New York, during his first tour of that country in 1888/1889. His début with the Berlin Philharmonic took place in 1898 and launched his international career. In 1910 he gave the premiére of Elgar's Violin Concerto, a work that was dedicated to him. After a short period of residence in the US during World War I, he finally settled there at the outbreak of World War II, becoming a US citizen in 1943. In 1941 a traffic accident caused his hearing and eyesight to be somewhat impaired but he continued to perform, giving his final public concert in 1947, although he continued to broadcast for some time after that. He died in New York City in 1962. Aside from being one of the great violin soloists of his time Kreisler was also a composer of some note, ascribing some of his own pastiche compositions to composers of an earlier time. When, in 1935, he revealed that these works were not written by the likes of Pugnani, Vivaldi and Tartini but were, in fact his own, he came in for a degree of critical opprobrium. Whatever the critics might have said it cannot be denied that many of Kreisler's shorter works, some of which are included in this set of 10 CDs, are among the most popular in the classical genre. Here is an opportunity for the collector to become familiar with these works played by the master himself. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
