Sviatoslov Richter (piano)

Although the works of Liszt were not a central part of Richter’s repertoire, he was one of the twentieth century’s important Liszt interpreters and was deeply committed to the works which he did play. In this collection we can hear his delicacy, tenderness and great lyric power in the two Liebesträume and contrasting ferocity in the Mephisto Waltz No.1. These are new digital restorations.

“Richter in his prime and at his best, excelling in music not central to his repertoire. Could even Liszt play better? It seems unlikely. Superb booklet notes.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2012 *****

“The Fantasy is a bravura specimen of Richter’s digital sophistication, a glittering colour-conscious exposé of Liszt’s brilliant vapidity...Bravura, élan, introspection and poetic refinement coalesce in a performance of real power...The whole programme is a feast, in fact, of Richter’s Liszt caught in live performance.” MusicWeb International, January 2013

No other pianist is as closely connected with the music of Franz Liszts as Georges Cziffra. The Hungarian-French virtuoso, who died in 1994, was one of the best Liszt interpreters of all time. His recording of the composer's two piano concertos together with other pieces for piano and orchestra are among the highlights of his discography.

Krystian Zimerman made two Liszt discs for Deutsche Grammophon in 1987 and 1990 respectively: one of the two Piano Concertos and Totentanz, with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa, the other of solo piano music, comprising Liszt’s masterwork, the B minor Sonata, and a selection of late piano works – spooky, often unnerving pieces, like Nuages gris and La lugubre gondola II.

Both are generally regarded as benchmark recordings, and have consistently been in the catalogue for over 20 years. On the Concertos disc, The Penguin Guide wrote: “It has poise and classicism and, as one listens, one feels that this music could not be played in any other way”, with Boston and Ozawa offering “excellent support”. Krystian Zimerman, as ever, plays a “superb” instrument (Gramophone) – prepared personally by the artist.

Now, as part of our celebration of the Liszt 200 anniversary, we are offering both as a handy twofer, with new cover art (photo by star Japanese photographer Akira Kinoshita), original liner notes in English, German and French, and additional photos in the booklet. The cover design is by Claudia Zimerman, the pianist’s graphic-designer daughter.

“Coinciding with the death of his mother and the birth of his daughter, these recordings were intensely personal for Zimerman. The Concertos are scintillating, the Sonata Olympian.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2012 *****

Singverein der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde & Wiener Philharmoniker, Franz Welser-Möst

On 08 June 2010, the Wiener Philharmoniker treats its namesake city to a free open-air concert on the grounds of the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace

In keeping with the Summer Night Concert’s popular character, Franz Welser-Möst will conduct the Wiener Philharmoniker in a programme of universal, indeed, one might say, cosmic appeal. Its title: “Moon – Planets – Stars”. This theme will be reflected throughout the concert with Josef Strauss’s waltz Sphärenklänge (Music of the Spheres), “Mars” from Holst’s Planets, selections from John Williams’s score to the Hollywood sci-fi classic Star Wars, Otto Nicolai´s “Moon Chorus” from The Merry Wives of Windsor, and Joseph Lanner’s waltz Abendsterne (Evening Stars), a fantastic piece here receiving its first recording by the Wiener Philharmoniker. Liszt’s bravura, but also highly poetic, Second Piano Concerto represents the only “down-to-earth” piece in the concert, with Yefim Bronfman the soloist.

Schönbrunn and its manicured Baroque gardens comprise one of the most elegant and beautiful UNESCO world cultural heritage sites. No more fitting backdrop for glorious music is imaginable.

Liszt - Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2

Liszt:

Piano Concerto No. 1 in E flat major, S124

Piano Concerto No. 2 in A major, S125

Totentanz, S126 for piano & orchestra

“This is playing in the grand manner. From the start of First Concerto you're aware of a consciously leonine approach. Zimerman even deliberately takes risks in a few technically perilous places where some of his colleagues, at least in the studio, play safe; and indeed his octaves in the opening cadenza are an example.
The result sounds spontaneous and, yes, even brave. Ozawa and the orchestra are behind the soloist in all this. Not only do lyrical sections sing with subtlety, the big passages also are shapely. There's plenty of drive in this Concerto.
In the Second Concerto Zimerman adopts a different approach; he evidently considers it a more poetic piece and the playing style, strong though it is, is to match. Finely though he handles the gentler music, there are odd sniffs and hums in the molto espressivo passage following the D flat major cello solo, and also in the last of the work's quiet sections. In the gorgeously grisly Totentanz, both the music and the playing should make your hair stand on end. The sound has a depth that suits the music and the piano is especially impressive.
Zimerman's freshness (he reminds us that this is a young man's music), and the coupling, makes this disc a most desirable one.”

Totentanz, S126 for piano & orchestra

With technique to burn but poetry at the fore, Jean-Yves Thibaudet's recordings of the two Liszt concertos have always held a special affection in many a music-lover's heart. They are reissued as per the original CD couplings - with the demonic Totentanz and the multi-coloured Hungarian Fantasy

“Indeed, I have only praise. Each of the four works here is well characterized, and the typically Lisztian varying tempos are spot on, unrushed but never deliberate and always leading naturally from one to the next. Climactic passages are powerful, but the sound remains pleasant and avoids the crudity that can emerge from these scores in less sensitive hands” Gramophone Magazine
