This fine collection includes many exceptional Cantelli recordings of Cantelli’s remastered to perfection. Including 8 CDs of music and a new 60 minute audio documentary about Cantelli’s life this is the ultimate tribute to the great Italian conductor. Among these recordings his Schumann’s Symphony no.4 (1953) and Brahms’s Symphony no.3 (1955) testify to the vitality of spirit and clarity of orchestral texture that were hallmarks of his performances. He was considered a conductor of characteristic Italianate verve, tempered by a sensibility to expressive nuance and balance of timbre. Cantelli was an advocate of rehearsing as well as performing without a score. He also liked to record in long takes, with the minimum of later correction. Widely regarded as Toscanini’s successor he came to a tragic end only a few days after being appointed principal conductor at La Scala when he died in a plane crash aged only 36. GUIDO CANTELLI – PORTRAIT OF A PERFECTIONIST (60 minute audio documentary) Guido Cantelli’s meteoric impact in his tragically cut-short life is recalled here from the perspectives of musicians, the audience and also a never before heard recording of a rehearsal. Former Philharmonia Orchestra members reincarnate their experiences with Cantelli, whose fanaticism can be heard as he repeats passages in the EMI recording session of Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe (Second Suite), which is preserved in stereo. The effect Cantelli had on his public is also brought to life in audience memories of his performances in the concert hall. As well as the music of Ravel, there are extracts from EMI recordings of Cantelli conducting works of Beethoven, Rossini, Tchaikovsky, Franck, Debussy and Casella. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Otto Klemperer was born on 14th May 1885 in Breslau, Silesia (now Wroclaw, Poland) and died on 6th July 1973 in Zurich and hence next year we mark 40 years since his passing. Although disfigured by a stroke suffered whilst a brain tumour was being removed he became a world-renowned conductor whose recordings became and remain touchstones for the EMI catalogue. Having completed the highly successful series of Beethoven recordings it was natural for EMI to seek further Romantic symphonies from Otto Klemperer. In addition to those of Brahms, Bruckner and Mahler which appear in their own specific boxes, Klemperer recorded three by Schubert, two by Mendelssohn as well as the Hebrides Overture and Midsummer Night’s Dream Incidental music, all four by Schumann as well as three Overtures, the last three by Tchaikovsky as well as Berlioz Symphonie fantastique, Franck’s D minor and Dvorák’s “From the New World”. This set also contains three Overtures by Weber and Johann Strauss’s Overture Die Fledermaus and two favourite Waltzes. Although clearly not a Symphony the charming Incidental music to a Midsummer Night’s Dream by Mendelssohn is included as Klemperer held it in the greatest affection and performed it on many occasions throughout his career. With the exception of the Franck and three of the Schumann Symphonies all recordings are with the Philharmonia Orchestra and therefore predate 1964. “Klemperer completists will probably have most of these performances already, and more general collectors will not necessarily regard any of the recordings as being first choice in the repertory. They nevertheless give an unusual sidelight on a conductor whose interpretations may be controversial but are always interesting.” MusicWeb International, April 2013 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

BIS presents a boxed set of Felix Mendelssohn’s complete symphonies, string symphonies and concertos. The symphonies were recorded in 2007 and 2008 by Andrew Litton and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and were warmly received by the reviewers when they were first released. The 12 string symphonies give us the background to the symphonies for full orchestra, written by a boy not yet fifteen. The recordings are from the Amsterdam Sinfonietta conducted by Lev Markiz. A further four discs offer all of the eight concertos that Mendelssohn composed. These include the youthful works with string orchestra accompaniment (concertos for violin, piano, violin and piano, and for two pianos), as well as the mature works for violin, piano and full orchestra, performed here by Isabelle van Keulen and Ronald Brautigam. | | | (also available to download from $50.75) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
