Kristian Bezuidenhout (fortepiano)

Paul McNulty, Divisov, Czech Republic, 2009, after Anton Walter & Sohn, Vienna, 1805. From the collection of Alexander Skeaping. Unequal temperament, A = 430

Fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout brings to a close his universally acclaimed Mozart cycle. The selections heard here range from the most famous (Sonata K545) to the least familiar (Fragments K312 and K400).

“Find yourself pulled in to an interpretation born of searching musical intelligence. Bezuidenhout plumbs depths rarely reached, affirming too that any score is a dead letter - unless nuances, inflections and aspects of emotional rhetoric that cannot be notated are discerned, felt and expressed” Gramophone Magazine, January 2016

“Articulation sparkles and ornaments are neat; slow movements sing like arias and he has fun giving weight to the Rondo themes; virtuosity buzzes under the surface but never becomes the focal point. On his modern keyboard – a Czech copy of an 1805 Viennese instrument – the sound is sweet, nutty and declamatory. Above all, Bezuidenhout knows how to make a fortepiano sing” The Guardian, 14th January 2016 ****

“These discs maintain the brilliant standards of previous issues. One of the South African Bezuidenhout’s great qualities is the naturalness of his ornamentation. It springs from the music, as opposed to being added on because it’s the thing to do...A treat.” Sunday Times, 6th March 2016

Fantasia in D minor, K397

Eight of Mozart’s divinely inspired Piano Sonatas here receive performances of mercurial inspiration from consummate-musician cum virtuoso-wizard Marc-André Hamelin. His four Haydn albums have enthralled—this new Mozart will not disappoint. Two Rondos, a Fantasia, and a decidedly quirky Gigue complete a delight of a double album.

“His extreme refinement of phrase and dynamics, his endlessly fresh approach to detail and breadth of line can be taken for granted: the first item, the late D major Sonata No. 18 has rarely burst off the page so full of vivacity and muscular energy....It's in slow movements...that a quality of alien sophistication...tends to interpose itself.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2015 ****

“Hamelin is never dull. He may not touch the heart through a perfect blend of control and insight, of pulse and flexibility, but his capacity for brilliance, for beauty of sound, and his flawless technical address can amount to pleasures in themselves.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2015

In 1877 Edvard Grieg informed his publisher that he had added “a free, second piano to several of Mozart’s sonatas.” As he later emphasised, his modernization “did not change a single one of Mozart’s notes”, but constituted “a way of showing admiration for an old master.” Grieg also intended the pieces for a duo of student at teacher; here the performers are a pianist of exceptional distinction and her legendary mentor: Elisabeth Leonskaja and Sviatoslav Richter.

Klára Würtz (piano)

Prima La Musica, Dirk Vermeulen

This CD is a reissue of one of the most successful Brilliant Classics recordings, Piano Music for Children, a simple and powerful concept aimed at a wide audience of music lovers, teachers, parents, grandparents and (of course..) children.

Included are the popular Kinderszenen by Robert Schumann, Children’s Corner by Claude Debussy and a selection from the Album for the Youth by Tchaikovsky, and not to forget the most iconic work for a child ever written: Beethoven’s Für Elise.

Hungarian pianist Klára Würtz plays with a natural, direct expression, warm and communicative.

“A nice idea, very nicely executed...Würtz's playing is clean and unfussy, and her selections from Tchaikovsky and Bartók are fascinating.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2016 ****
