Meta-Morphosen Berlin

Ensemble Metamorphosen Berlin follow up on the success of their debut album with works by arguably the most well-known composer to come out of Russia; Tchaikovsky. Their debut album “Inspiration” earned 5* reviews from Cencerto Music Magazine as well as Berlin Broadcaster rbb Kulurradio. This new album includes Tchaikovsky’s “Souvenir de Florence” and his “Serenade in C Major”. Op. 48. A particular highlight of this new release are NEW ARRANGEMENTS by cellist/ director Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt of “Valse Sentimentale” – recorded for the FIRST TIME for cello and string orchestra. The Ensemble Metamorphosen Berlin is a merger of outstanding chamber musicians and young international awardees of the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and others. Led by conductor Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, the Ensemble delights with solistic brilliance, emotional pleasure in playing and tonal sensitivity. Founded by the idea of transfering a Cellist strengths to a Chamber Orchestra, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt and his Ensemble developed their own playing culture and tonal perfection shaped by dynamics and sensuality.

“The 19-strong string ensemble makes a big-boned sound, closely miked...It launches into the Souvenir de Florence with bold confidence...In the shorter numbers, Schmidt leads a wistful Valse sentimentale, while October from The Seasons particularly suits the cello spotlight, his glowing tone warm and inviting.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2017

Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Sir Neville Marriner

Although the orchestra was the most natural vehicle for Tchaikovsky’s colourful and emotionally highly-charged music, in his string quartets (all dating from the 1870s) he showed a fine understanding of the medium and adopted a more purely musical train of thought – deriving in part from his deep fondness for the classical world of Mozart – without losing his own personality. Souvenir de Florence, his string sextet, dates from 1890–91 and Tchaikovsky confided in his friend Alexander Siloti that he feared he was thinking in orchestral terms before arranging his ideas for string sextet; the work is performed here in a version for string orchestra, from a much-praised Argo recording with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, which went on to win an EDISON AWARD.

‘beautifully natural and well-blended sound’ (String Quartets)

“The Gabrieli's survey of Tchaikovsky's String Quartets is more lyrical than dramatic, while a slow-burning string-ensemble performance of Souvenir de Florence makes a useful filler.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2014 ***

“beautifully natural and well-blended sound” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 1978 (String Quartets)

“the Gabrielis give a finely conceived performance, producing well-blended tonal quality” Penguin Guide

TrondheimSolistene, Øyvind Gimse

TrondheimSolistene (The Trondheim Soloists) are regarded as one of the top chamber orchestras in the world. Their Divertimenti (2L50SABD) and Folk Style (2L68SABD) releases were both nominated for a total of five American Grammy Awards in categories “Best Small Ensemble”, “Best Engineered Album” and “Best Surround Sound Album”. This release will no doubt receive similar plaudits.

“The usual instrumental groupings were broken up and the players placed in a circle surrounding the microphones, so the listener is immersed in the sound. The result is an immersive experience that's thrillingly different from the norm...However, while fast passages sound viscerally exciting, they periodically lack direction.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2013 ****

“The very slight chill on (or freezing of) the warm Romantic sound you're expecting to hear brings a degree of objectivity, or extra focus, to the performance. Additionally, the Trondheimers are as precise narrators of musical argument as any string quartet or conductor-led ensemble.” Gramophone Magazine, December 2012

Tchaikovsky: String Quartet & Souvenir de Florence

Tchaikovsky: String Quartet & Souvenir de Florence

Tchaikovsky:

String Quartet No. 1 in D major, Op. 11

Souvenir de Florence, Op. 70

with Ophélie Gaillard (cello) & Lise Berthaud (viola)

Novus Quartet

After an audacious label and album debut dedicated to Webern, Beethoven and Yun, the young musicians of the Novus Quartet interpret with passion two essential works from Tchaikovsky's chamber music: the First Quartet and the Sextet 'Souvenir de Florence' aided and abetted by two guests, cellist Ophélie Gaillard and viola player Lise Berthaud.

These two works, milestones in the career of the composer (the first written in 1871; the second in 1887), show Tchaikovsky's inclination for popular melodies. Clarity and technique serving musical expression, the fiery strings of the Novus Quartet spread a warm, homogenous sound that invites melancholy, in the slow movements, and paints the exultation of Tchaikovsky's poetic universe.

Souvenir de Florence, Op. 70

Heinrich Talalyan (viola), Mstislav Rostropovich (cello)

Composed between 1871 and 1875 were Tchaikovsky's String Quartets. The quartets still belong to his early period but are considered among the most significant of the second half of hte nineteenth century, a period that, despite a significant production for this chamber ensemble, does not include masterpieces comparable to those of Beethoven and Schubert. There are many versions of the quartets and the one presented here is one of the few truly historical versions that exists - they are the recording of the late fifties made by the first formation of the legendary Borodin Quartet, which relies on the presence of Mstislav Rostropovich and Heinrich Talalyan for the recording of the famous "Souvenir de Florance", one of the major Sextets of the Nineteenth Century, writtein in 1890.

Souvenir de Florence, Op. 70

Moritzburg Festival Ensemble

Inspired by a journey to Tchaikovsky’s hometown Saint Petersburg, Jan rediscovered some of his favorite pieces from the composer.

The famous Rococo Variations were written by Tchaikovsky for the cellist Wilhelm Fitzhagen who added some minor edits to make the work more playable. Jan recorded a new combination of the original with Fitzenhagen’s version.

Sérénade mélancolique and Souvenir d’un lieu cher are both originally works for violin and orchestra. For this recording, Jan arranged the cello parts himself and teamed up with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony under their new Music Director Andrés Orozco-Estrada.

The vivacious “Souvenir de Florence” is Tchaikovsky’s only string sextet. Jan recorded this piece with musicians of the Moritzburg Festival, an excellent chamber music festival located in the Moritzburg castle near Dresden.

Jan Vogler’s distinguished career has seen him perform with renowned conductors and internationally acclaimed orchestras around the world. His strong classical foundation has allowed him to push the boundaries of his sound, creating an ongoing dialogue with contemporary composers and performers.

“Vogler and friends deliver an exciting account [of the Serenade for Strings], heightened by lean, wiry strings. The ebullient Allegro con spirit launches with gusto, while the Adagio cantabile sings. Vogler’s ensemble perform with great panache…[the Rococo Variations are given] a spruce account” Gramophone Magazine, May 2016

“Vogler and Andres Orozco-Estrada wrest Tchaikovsky away from the Romantic interpretations and impose a cooler, more precise order” The Observer, 13th March 2016

Souvenir de Florence, Op. 70

The Russian Virtuosi of Europe, Yuri Zhislin

The Russian Virtuosi of Europe are among the most innovative and distinct string ensembles on today's musical scene.

This album for Orchid Classics is their debut recording and features two of Tchaikovsky’s most beloved works for strings.

The group has collaborated with artists such as Sergei Nakariakov, the Oistrakh String Quartet and the legendary ‘father’ of Russian rock, Boris Grebenshikov.

“This dazzling debut disc matches airy nimbleness with richness of sound.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2016

“This is a pleasant performance, the gentle pizzicato accompaniment to the Adagio cantabile a feather bed for a lovely violin solo…one immediately notices the RVE’s firm, resonant sound, in a brisk, businesslike performance, cleanly articulated…this is a promising debut disc” Gramophone Magazine, May 2016
